The problem is SE only has so many units. Given those are always working on something there's not much room for these remake projects. I'm not sure what CBU1 was doing prior to being given FF7R but I wouldn't be surprised that it was FF16 and they scratched that and gave it to CBU3. Which leads me to wonder who got FF9R..
Again there's not that many options. Either CBU1 is doing yet another remake alongside 7R which would be kind of sad for them creatively speaking. Or it's CBU3 but tbh I liked FF16 with the fights and such. But I don't like the idea of FF9R following that studios framework that they use for FF14/16. Any other options I honestly don't know? Did they secretly create a new division? Who the hell is doing this inhouse these days.

Unfortunately SE lost a lot of traction with older fans over the years and their marketing clearly hasn't been enough to capture a massive new player base just yet so it still may be a while before they're able to recreate the magic they once had. They'll have to re-use FF7R's battle system with tweaks/upgrades for people to trust their identity in the franchise going forward, otherwise people won't be confident they're going to get a fun game to play. There is no point in wasting everyone's time and their own money trying to reinvent the wheel so if something mind blowing surfaces in the gaming industry and changes action combat then they can just "borrow" from their concept.

Really not expecting this to also be divided into 3, although it really could be just as easily as 7 was. They could even flesh out some bits that got shortchanged in the OG, like Freya's story, or the relative downtime of disc 3 where you find a whole new continent and barely anything happens there.

Like Persona 5's battle system is snappy, it speeds up the navigation of menus by binding basic attacks to one button and abilities to another, it has you select targets using the directional buttons *before* picking your action... there are lots of little things you can do in a turn based game to make it a better feeling experience.
FF9 is disliked in this regard because it was slow as molasses, it had one of the worst implementations of ATB in the series, battles all started with a 10 second pan over your characters and all of the enemies loading in one by one, it uses the same old school menus but they have a delay to them... and then it just ends up being the worst in the series by having the longest least responsive feeling battles.

When you think about, all these potential remake ideas would indeed be FF7R levels of scope:
FF6 Remake would be too complex given there are 14 playable characters
FF8 Remake would need tons of rework and refactoring from the original’s gameplay. Especially the Junction System
FF10 Remake is practically less urgent as the original already has voice acting and good graphics. A 10-3 is most plausible but that is a high priority task there.
FF9 is easily the least problematic remake out of all them. Not only that, but the game is adored by fans, it’s a perfect opportunity for a mainline title to return to turn based, and the scope of the game is not as large as FF7 Remake

    • @Handles_are_garbage

7R did a complete overhaul of the battle system so we can assume that if they're remakes in that sense then 8 will be so far removed from the original junctioning system that you won't need to worry (and I suspect the change might actually sell people on the benefits of the original). The bigger problem for 8 is the story: 7R has usurped the time travel themes of 8. I am already of the opinion that the writers at SquareEnix are creatively bankrupt, but releasing two games with convoluted time travel plots so close to each other will really expose them imo.

Scope wise you are on point to be honest. I find it laughable people think FF7R could have ever fit into one game at AAA production levels and scope. But I think FF9 could kinnddd of work that way if they just really go all out on the content and over deliver (because it's still multiple continents and dozens of locations, including a secondary world).
Gameplay wise I think you are setting yourself up for negativity and hate just like many others. I absolutely do not mind turn based (love Persona, love Dragon Quest, love the newer Yakuza games). But it's very clear SE wants to see how much they can grow the FF9 IP and they also have hopes it will resonate with younger kids. It's their shot at the whole Disney angle with FF.
So they would not in a million years go through all this IP growing efforts (even announcing a animated series and so forth) and then limiting their audience to oldschool vets who (for some reason, hyper focus on turn based combat being present in FF). Younger kids in the age range of 8-16 these days just don't care about turn based and don't even want to try it. So unless their expectations for FF9R are squarely focused on the older audience (they are not so numerous as they think they are). Then no this wont be turn based and probably plays as an evolution of FF16/FF7R combat wise.
So it could certainly happen that it is turn based. But it will fly against any indication we've gotten from SE and the rumors regarding FF9 as an IP and their plans for it. Expecting this will just lead to the reveal of FF9R to once again be mired in negativity and toxicity no matter how good it looks. Because the comment sections and message boards will be full of people that set themselves up for failure for years and are now going crashing down hard and fast.
And I just think this is one of the deeper roots of the problem. Ignoring actual logic and indications in the vain hope of sentiment and hoping reality to align with that. And then following your emotions to conclusion when it does not.

    - Sped up battle system and the ability to trigger Trance after filling a bar.
    - Dragon Quest XI style overworld, including enemies on the field.
    - Some tweaks to Tetra Master so it isn't so random. Hell I'd be ok with them just redoing it altogether like Queen's Blood or just transplanting Triple Triad in its place.
    - Some way to track friendly monsters and the quiz monster.

It’s not as simple as just everybody that wanted that suddenly coming back. What we need to understand is that fans of the old school games slowly started to leave since 12 came out. Disappointment after disappointment is what made a lot of them never ever come back. My best buddy was a huge fan and he loves how Rebirth looks but he just doesn’t feel attracted to play it and seems to be hooked on Elden Ring and From Soft games now. They just didn’t feed their fans as they were supposed to and lost them. That’s it.

This is why relationship building is vital in any field. And keeping it healthy. SE should not focus on trying to get the old fans back therefor. Focus on what is there now and build on that.

That said, I can also see why Square would have taken it back if they had an extremely specific idea for how a remake would look, because CC2 have a certain style to how they do things - especially RPGs - and Square are... well, they're Square. I remember some of the articles from back then. I thought the story actually went that SE outsourced to CC2 only for the CG, not the programming/development. Eventually SE announced that they were scrapping it and redoing the artwork themselves. True, I don't recall a reason being given, but it could just be that the media were way too trigger-happy on pulling stories together, and SE had officially announced it at that stage, but there is a chance that pulling it over to in-house was always on the cards, and that CC2 were just meant to help with look-dev.
This's way more likely than making a big mistake twice, that they actually do it this way to spare their own pre-production time and fast-track to a workable base.

Once by doing a puzzle in the wrong order to try to find secrets (game design dodnt account for thst and there was no way to fix it) and the second was taking all the mages to the no magic dungeon (i was thinking about who Zidane wanted to protect and forgot that i was very explicitly told it was no magic and thars why Kuja couldnt go)
So i had to play through the game thrre times just to finish it once. And im the tyoe that does everything including that insane jump rope minigame.

As somebody who is only just getting into the FF series, I’d much rather see a FF9 Remake have more of an Action RPG focus similar to FF7 Remake. It’s just a much more fun and satisfying gameplay style to me and I really think if Square just kind of kept and improved upon it further going forward, they would have a really solid definitive gameplay style.
I’m not really that curious about indulging other people’s nostalgia with a more “faithful” ATB system, unless it was changed up significantly in a way that expands the experience. Otherwise why not simply just remaster the game again?
No hate to anybody who loves the classic FF turn based style, I get it, I’m just saying that if you really want this thing to succeed, you need to rely on more people purchasing it than just the diehards, and Remake pulled in people who hadn’t even played the original 7. It doesn’t need to be one for one on gameplay, certainly not in story direction, but at least make it have a broader appeal than just “yeah this one is for the old school guys.”

I think there is just this mainstream expectation that everything has to be AAA to be good and considered high quality standards in the industry but that isn't the case at all for many different video game publishers. Quite frankly I think the kinds of games, these remasters and smaller scale revivals of classic franchises, 2DHD remakes are what is keeping the industry afloat and there working. They don't take near as long to develop, they also make alot of money in sales and the return investment is so much greater then these AAA projects. The profit loss in dev AAA just isn't worth it and the time investment it takes, thats why these guys have to spoil us and market games for the next 5 years somehow, to get there annual revenue. Nintendo figured that out along time ago.

The original Final Fantasy 10 and earlier FF titles realised that there was something to balancing the epic moments (often 1st/3rd person) and the mild moments (often top down) in between vs the modern FF epic action almost all the time trope that requires the world to become more lifeless and cookie cutter as you travel it, so if FF9 is a modern all in one game hybrid remake that is more like the older titles in scope and like them during major scenes it can go all out for those rarer moments in the game but overall would be the same scope and size then this could prove a best of both worlds concept worth proving. To take this even further though, imagine if they did this from now on for new FF titles and had say 3 in development at the same time over 3 year dev cycle and released them every year at the same time period imagine the free publicity and if you hate this years then just wait a year, they could then create mobile games, Netflix tv type deals, etc for any additional content, profit per sale would end up being higher I would think and yet much better brand loyalty and development. This is why every sequel, side game, remake parts beyond one game, did take from potential new mainline FF titles to a massive degree over the last 2 decades, but because those titles never got made we don't know what we missed out on.

Final Fantasy IX is one of my favorite games ever, but I do NOT them to go way they went with FF7R. Not that Rebirth is bad, quite the opposite, it's that SE spent too much money on a Sony exclusive game. The FF community is big, but not big enough make so that Square could earn all that money back so quickly. So, this FFIX Remake must have a much more modest cost. I want is for them to improve on the overall experience of OG game.

I enjoyed Remake and Rebirth but I really hope they just keep this to one game, keep similar character models but cleaned up

For my opinion, I wonder if they'll keep the combat the same as the original or changing up a little for new fans and old ones that get used to news combat.

They probably should improve on the combat system. Cause although Ff9 is good. The it's combat system isn't really that notable

I wonder how they would do the combat. It can't work like 7 remake. In 7 each character had a different fighting style but they were still fighters who could stand on there own, and the party was mostly inter-changeable. In 9 though there is distinct character classes, making things more team based. It is possible to make Garnet into an action oriented cleric, and vivi fight like Aerith, but I don't see that. It would be better off with a baldur's gate 3 type style.

@@darrel7493'balders gate 3 type style' translates to FF Tactics or FF12. Neither of which is likely
It will either be turn based or ff7r style.

@@justinwhite2725 . Balders gate 3 is turn based. I mentioned it since it is turn base system that is popular, as opposed to the old jrpg style where everyone stands in a line. Action oriented ff7r only worked because every character in that can heal, do black magic, and fight using abilities. Incorporating it for ff9 would mean getting rid of the role based class system ff9 has. If one characters is too be a heavy tank, another a healer, and another a strict black mage, then it needs a modernized team combat type system.

Just as you said, I'd almost never pay for a FF9 remake that would try to cram in a new battle mode or hyperrealism or anything like that but I'd be among the first in line to preorder a more faithful ATB-based version of the game that brings the charm of this timeless classic onto new consoles.
