    The interior door handles are made electronically to prevent opening them while a car or a pedestrian or bicyclist passing close to the car. It uses the blind spot monitoring system and remains activated for 3 minutes after turning off the car.

    • @wesgregg6451
      @wesgregg6451 Před 2 lety +5

      Yeah, the hatch on my mother's Focus has one of those buttons instead of a traditional opener device. And that's fine, for her, because the actual door handles are mechanical. However, I wonder how the owner of this vehicle is expected to get inside if/when his/her battery dies. Doug pointed out that there is still a mechanical alternative *inside*, but that doesn't do anything for the majority of dead battery situations, when the battery is dead before the person even gets into the vehicle. I assume that there is no easy way to get the hood open, that feature having disappeared 42 years ago.
      EDIT: I do like the concept; I just think that there should always be a mechanical way to get inside a vehicle. Also, I like your "...add door handle defrost system" idea. I do not know that it's feasible, but I like it. They've already been doing heated mirrors for years. Some vehicles also have shutters/slats in front of the radiator that open/close according to ambient temperature and the temperature of the coolant, to facilitate a quicker engine warm-up during Winter, either standard or as part of a "cold weather package," so - again, if feasible - that would probably be a good thing to have on vehicles located in regions of the world that experience cold weather.

    • @bryduhbikeguy
      @bryduhbikeguy Před 2 lety +4

      I do wonder also about getting IN with a dead battery.You can't open the hood to charge without getting Into a vehicle anymore.I like the idea of 'handle-warmers',but that goes to that point again.

    • @wesgregg6451
      @wesgregg6451 Před 2 lety

      @@zee9276 Yes. I was curious, so I just had a look through the owner's manual. There is a rather comprehensive section about the key fobs (2), key card (1), electronic locks, cell phone control app, et cetera - that doesn't mention how to get in if/when the usual methods fail. But it does say that there is a mechanical key in each fob and the key card. I looked in the index, and found out where in the manual to find the information. The external mechanical door openers may be enabled by manually unlocking the doors... or by involving the vehicle in a severe frontal or rear-end collision (which could be a lifesaver). The person needs to use the corner of a credit card, knife blade, et cetera to pry the little cover off of the door handle (it's where one's thumb would naturally touch when grasping the handle), insert one of the physical keys into the keyhole, and turn it. Then, pull on the door handle, apparently.
      That's actually a better setup than some newer vehicles which hide the keyhole on the bottom of the door or directly below it on the underside of the vehicle.
      EDIT: Incidentally, the owner's manual warned that, if one of the key fobs or the key card was in range of the vehicle, and a door handle was splashed with "a significant quantity" of water, lol, it would cause the doors to unlock. Technology: rolleyes: . . . .

    This car actually is the only one that has the electronic door release done right. All other cars have some button somewhere usually above the handle. But the door release button in this NX is exactly under your thumb when you grab the handle. It means that you can unlock and open the door with just one motion. Just grab and push. Unlike other cars, where you unlock the button, push the door with your elbow and then open it with your hand. I have not seen any other car with electronic door release buttun, that actually makes sense.

    I drive a 2016 NX 200t, and it has one of the strangest quirks I have ever seen: a GPS-programmed imaginary clock.
    There's no digital clock, only an analog clock. I looked through every option in the infotainment screen and gauge cluster, and nothing. Yet, when you cross time zones, the infotainment screen will alert you to the fact that you entered a new time zone and ask if you'd like to switch the clock over. If you press yes, absolutely nothing happens. There is no digital clock for it to change, and the analog clock still needs to be manually adjusted.

I also have Method wheels and Falken wildpeak tires on it and drive it offroad often. It is really fun to rip around on trails and floats over bumps like a rally car when at speed. It’s a very versatile and quality vehicle that will last a long long time with one major downside and that’s the engine drone with the hybrid drivetrain and cvt transmission. I plan to seriously consider this new model simply for the tech upgrades which are top of the class.

      less lines. smoother, cleaner surfaces. they also cleaned up the front and back design. honestly, i think it looks better than the BMW and Mercedes competition. and i know Doug complained about the Spindle grill but i think car journalists signed a pact or something to always throw shade at the grill design. i think that's why Lexus hasn't changed, and good for them because it's distinctive and i like it actually. you will notice car journalists will say something like "normally i think the current Lexus grill design is ugly, but on this car it works alright enough." or something like that. but see, it wasn't a true compliment.
      i know the real reason is that journalists don't want to come off as biased. but bias works in both directions. in this case, it's bias against Lexus' front end design philosophy. speaking of which: you'll notice Lexus integrated the Checkmark running lights in with the headlight housing. which i think compliments the redesign quite well actually.

    A couple suggestions from a long-time viewer here:
    1. It was better when you took us through each item of the Doug Score. Just showing the summary without any reasoning pretty much renders the system useless.
    2. The screenshots of the scores at the end compare models that are way too similar. These comparisons could be more insightful if you broadened the field and threw in some wildcards.
    3. Your best videos aren’t of the weirdest or rarest cars, but rather of cars we THOUGHT we knew but didn’t, that you provide us a fresh perspective on. They’re the videos where the *sum* of the quirks is greater than any of the quirks themselves.

    Hey Doug,
    Would you consider adding a few cars/sedans to the ending Dougscore comparison slide? Sometimes crossovers like the NX compete not only with their rivals from other brands, but also the comparable sedan from their own brand. Would have loved to get your take on whether it's worth it to "step up" from a similarly specced ES to the NX in terms of price, storage, room, and performance. Thanks!

    • @naveenthemachine
      @naveenthemachine Před 2 lety +4

      Going from an ES to an nx is actually a downgrade. The es is far more luxurious inside and it’s way more refined. That buttery smooth 3.5L v6 is just the next level up in luxury and the nx lacks that.

None of the RAV4 has have this nicer radio, although the newer ones likely will get it in a year. The gauge cluster screen, is atrocious. It's done better even in their Toyota Highlanders, and even in the lower base model trims of their other Toyota RAV4s. My 21 Sienna has a better gauge cluster and screen layout. Thanks for your review. I test drove an NX350h last week. I agree with your quirky comments re the door handles and the gear shifter. I understand why re the door handles but they are not intuitive to use. And I had a lot of difficulty even getting the car into drive due to the design which means you have to push the lever to the left before moving it back and forward unlike my ES300h. Yes, overall it is a really nice car and better than the last version, particularly re the infotainment system. Of note, I did not like not having a spare tire and being forced to have run flat tires. And unlike my Lexus ES300h, I found that, when I took my foot off the accelerator, a type of gentle regenerative braking took place to pull back my speed - instead of allowing the car to coast.

I really wish Lexus could do something about the current situation with ADM because it's turning away potential customers. Ended up buying a fully loaded top trim CX-5 and although it doesn't get as good gas mileage as the NX, we got it for MSRP and it's a fantastic car for the money. @Kenny Kolodor I mean everyone has different preferences to how they want their infotainment to be like. Not everyone will be on the same table to whether the Genesis Infointantment system is easier to use or not.

    This is a good SUV.
    I drove an original NX for a couple of months, and I enjoyed it. It was great for what it's designed to be and I'd get one.
    Interesting how the plug in hybrid is the same price as the RAV4 PRIME. Coincidence?

    There are many different types of car enthusiast, I consider myself one, but I think the NX is an excellent vehicle. Shocked to see that you chose extremely unreliable brands, jaguar Lincoln, etc., over Alexis reliability. Some of us car enthusiast prefer reliability, sorry you can’t see that.

    I think the question that SHOULD’VE been addressed more in this video (and wasn’t) is whether or not this is worth upgrading to over the RAV4Prime. It used to be that they were sisters from opposite sides of the tracks, but with the RAV4 Prime STARTING at $40k, I think it’s an apt comparison missed.
