      I know this is an old comment, but please don't forcibly remove barnacles from turtles. More often than not you will end up causing more harm to the turtle overall.
      A healthy turtle will be able to manage barnacles on its own. If you find a turtle that is overburdened with barnacles or bivalves please take it to a local marine rescue service so they can give it the proper care.

    On a more serious note though it's not a good idea to forcibly pick off those barnacles on turtles because their shell are actually quite fragile. If you see one with lots of barnacles it's most likely sick and need to see the vet.

    Why dont the cleaning fish get rid of the barnacles?

    • @Tzara86
      @Tzara86 Před 3 lety

      Some amount of barnacles is ok. This rubbing on rock behaviour does help control the amount of barnacles. As long as the turtle is healthy and continues to migrate, it will not overgrow barnacles.
      If a turtle has a lot of barnacles, that is a sick turtle who stopped normal behavior and needs immediate care from a professional.

      A brush is the right thing to use to brush off the barnacles . But usually a brush is not available with most of these men, so they use a knife to dig off the barnacles, and ends up, chipping into the the shell on the turtle's back

    • @bambam859
      @bambam859 Před 4 lety +9

      Only in very large numbers. If a turtle is covered in a huge amount of barnacles it's a a sign the turtle is very sick and are unable to manage there barnacle load, just scraping the barnacles off and rereleasing them into the ocean isn't the best way to go, it's better to rescue them and put them in fresh water so the barnacles die and loosen before being removed. And along side this you also need to work out why the sea turtle is ill and give it treatment.
