Marcus, I applaud this wonderful segment on the evolving and sophisticated Chinese culinary scene in Las Vegas. It is well known within the Chinese American community that some of the best Chinese chefs are working in Las Vegas making the city one of the premier destinations for authentic Chinese food. Your segment and the production staff deserve praise for providing both historical and cultural context to this exploration to help viewers understand how immigrants have always found a place in America through their food. As you correctly stated food is a way to convey one's culture both tangible and intangible and a place where people can find common ground. You bring great energy to your show and convey knowledge and understanding of culinary exploration with sensitivity, authenticity and genuine admiration. Masterfully done and looking forward to future installments!

Chef Marcus is doing a phenomenal job showcasing ethnic cuisine.
No Passport Required is one of my favorite shows and I get surprised on occasion. I always knew there was a Middle Eastern presence in Detroit, Vietnamese in New Orleans, Armenians in LA. Before I saw this episode I had absolutely no idea there was a huge Chinese presence in Vegas.
Next time I'm there I want to go to the Chinatown Plaza and try all the different restaurants.

I grew up near the Chinatown in Las Vegas, right in the heart near the bank that has Mandarin and Cantonese available. The main Asian representation in Vegas is Filipino for sure, but a good number of Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese and Thai also live here. More Indians are moving here as well but we really haven't seen that food scene blow up.
Love everything about this series, but particularly appreciated Marcus's clothes in this one...love his style.
Marcus is an exceptional host. And his Chinese accent when saying tofu and 乾杯 is pretty good! 👍
10:23, JK Restaurant, the owners are from ToiShan. For those who are interested, in the 1970s and back, most of the Chinese in the Americas were from ToiShan, there are more ToiShan folks outside China than in China. They (I am a ToiShanese) contributed to the Americas than any other people from China. They paved the road for Asians in the US and Canada. It used to more in Mexico as well. One of my great grandfather was in Cuba. We have been in the US for 180 years. There were2 Chines served the Civil War.
You being a non-Chinese, I am amazed your comments and understanding of the Chinese food culture is spot on! 👍

I was in Vegas last July and I made an unplanned stop by a noodle shop in a Chinatown mall. Best noodles I ever had!!
The kind and honorable Chinese people with great determination and endurance, plus the commitment to each other, sustained them through many injustices, still.
Mott 32 is really expensive. You can find food that taste just as well and not as expensive in Vegas’s China town.
I was unimpressed with the place honestly. We did the duck and it was super dry. There were definitely some good things on the menu but I've been to plenty of better places in Vegas if you are going to spend that much. Very cool atmosphere though.

Back in 2013 when I moved into my recently deceased grandmother’s house, I couldn’t afford cable and back then you could get digital channels (around 15/16) and one of them was PBS. The programs on that channel got me through a rough year. Mind of the Chef was spectacular and this show reminds me of the first few seasons but better as it Doesn’t have a Chen in it 😂😅.
Jokes aside, PBS is an essential and excellent thing. Thank you.

Las Vegas may not have the BEST of any cuisine, but it has solid examples of many cuisines, from Mexican to Chinese to Filipino to Ethiopian to Salvadoran to Vietnamese. Cubans are also rapidly growing here and a few top notch Cuban spots have opened.
And nowhere else apart from Hawaii has the quality of Hawaiian food that we have.
I'm a Vegas native who travels a lot and I always tell people that Vegas has a solid offering of many different foods.

Agreed. Also a Vegas native. We didn’t know how good we had it in the food scene here till we moved away after living in Vegas for 30 years. The food has gotten so solid, I hadn’t felt the urgency to travel to Cali for good food in the past 5 or 6 years.
As a Las Vegas local, this was perfect.
I remember going to Vegas as a child and there was limited Asian food. It is awesome to see how much the Asian food scene has developed exponentially! Do an episode on the local Hawaiian culture and food scene please!

Marcus, please do an episode about the Sri Lankan community in New York. I know that in New York and in New Jersey and also the greater Los Angeles area in which I live in. We are such a little known culture incredible as well as very very different than Indian food. I would really love to see your PBS show provide a educational culinary demonstration of Sri Lankan food. Sri Lanka has been colonized by the Dutch, Portuguese and❤❤ British,and how our religious beliefs, culture and heritage and most importantly food has been directly affected. But importantly, I would like the rest of the world to see the actual indigenous food. think about cinnamon and about all the other ingredients native to Sri Lanka and they are vast and so complex, the cuisine it’s beautiful, please take into consideration thank you so much Marcus I have been following in your career since college, I’m 40 now. You are so inspirational you’re an incredible human being. Thank you so much for everything you do, and provide to the rest of us.

Ok... I've fought against watching this show for a long time because who can replace Mr. Bourdain and his insights into food and culture, but maybe, just maybe...Chef Marcus is hitting all the right notes and empty pauses for me. "Thank you" for putting together such a wonderful episode that hit the spot for someone who lived in Vegas. I'm "liking and subscribing" and looking forward to visiting the older content.

Crazy, did not know the Chinese immigrants settled in Vegas since 1860. BTW, best Chinese food in Vegas is Ping Pang Pong (inside Gold Coast Casino). I will try all the little shops in this video.

Thanks for this video. In Hawaii, we have a unique interpretation of Cantonese Chinese food. Now, I live in the ninth island of Las Vegas and miss my hometown Chinese restaurant. Im inspired to try cooking them myself.

Las Vegas has an amazing China Town and it keeps getting better and better… I live in Central CA so I am 3 hours from SF and SOCAL both have amazing Asian food communities but I choose to drive to Vegas…

I speak Cantonese actually in California and mostly I am surprised that Marcus learned how to speak it perfectly well!! Way to go Marcus!! If you want to learn more Cantonese I am your guide lol.

Great show. My mouth is going thru noodle envy. I know the mouth feel. I know it’s as good as steak but you don’t get tired of the meatiness as quickly. This is pure culinary torture!

How is uniformity possible in Chinese restaurants across the country? Because there are two centralized hubs where all chefs get hired--San Francisco and New York--and they are administered by a restaurant association. You are assessed by your ability to make a standard repertoire, and the more items you can make, the more you get paid. You are never hired face to face by the owner (who might be in Juneau or Des Moines). They just phone it in. And request someone with that specific range of repertoire. BTW: When unemployed, chefs high tail it back to those cities and learn more skills from other unemployed chefs--and mentors--to rise up the pay scale.

i'm teochew chinese so southern chinese also has so much variations. and when he went to eat taiwanese food and the oyster pancakes, that is within teochew and hokkien cuisine which is the majority of people who escaped to taiwan. oyster pancake is my favorite ua lak. i hope samuel gets someone to tell him this so he knows this! cantonese has more stir fries while teochews are more on steamed dishes with ingredients like chestnuts are very teochew chinese. i hope u learn about hainanese cuisine and variety within a variant of a region

Great episode! Its refreshing to see more west coast chinese videos. Too many videos on NYC Chinatown when I really believe West coast has far better Chinese food.

Hainan chicken is not from Hainan, it is a Singaporean dish. Also cheers in Mongolian is not Gan bei, that's Mandarin.

This episode was filmed pre-pandemic? The KJ is no longer there (moved to a casino) and the restaurant that replaced it (Lucky Cafe) is no longer in business according to Yelp. EDIT: Flock & Fowl closed in 2020.

Given the Vegas casinos catering heavily to the Chinese community, no wonder why Chinese cuisine has taken a quantum leap forward in authenticity and quality in the last 20 years.
The Indigenous Taiwanese are progenitors of Polynesian people. The Samoans, Tongans and Maori are related to Taiwanese indigenous. Mind blown!

I'd have to say, Taiwanese food, is the best.
Saying Chinese is like saying European. While its technically true, there's more to it.
For example the Cantonese are genetically the same people as Vietnamese people, only difference is they stayed in China while the Vietnamese pushed south and diverged. Every government want cohesion of even now the "Chinese" label encompasses so many different ethnic groups.
Chinese will own Vegas someday
Only the buffets are the best in Las Vegas.
They are not even close anymore. Many buffets shut down due to the pandemic have been replaced by food halls, which provide much better food. Resort World Asian food hall is one of the best in Vegas. The good buffets in Vegas are over $50 a person to eat at. I've eaten at almost all of the current Vegas buffets, and I would recommend only 3 to people who ask me: Wynn, Caesars, Palms. Wicked Spoon was overrated. Bellagio tanked in quality post-pandemic.
