- If you wanted to cruise down to the Riviera in the late 1990s, you could take a Ferrari 550. Or, if you wanted to be less showy and more comfortable, you could have bought one of these. One of only 49 produced in right hand drive, the SL60 was one of the first cars made after AMG was bought out by Daimler-Benz and features a 6L V8 up front. Of course, badge politics meant that AMG's lump was only ever advertised as having "380hp", as the flagship SL600's V12 made 389.

Looooove the R129! So classy
Hmm.... I might be alone in this view, but if I had the choice in the 90s of a 355 or this SL, I think I'd have the Mercedes.
Mind you, I adore mercs and and am a firm believer that they make some of the finest cars in the world, so I am biased.
I completely agree, for the money of a really good 355 you could potentially have 997 Carrera S and one of these which would be an excellent garage.
Not the 73 variant I requested, but a good effort! MOT history makes interesting reading get that oil leak sorted!
There's really something about this generation SL, it just looks so timeless. And of course the AMG models are simply wonderful.
Great car and great video, I appreciate the way you state your pre existing views up front but remain open to having them changed when you drive the car. Refreshing change from many of your peers.
Objectivity, a rare quality indeed.
The shot at 3:40 looks straight out of a 90's Hip Hop music video directed by Hype Williams...

If you want to continue the reviews of Mercedes AMG’s back catalogue, I have an SLK 55 AMG that you are welcome to try out.
Nice review ;)
Love the glorious M119, probably the best of all Mercedes V8 engines. Quad cam, 32 valve, torquey and at the same time quite rev happy (for a Merc V8 of course). The newer M113 felt slooow compared to this beast.
I’ve had a 1983 280 107. That was a car that felt like an occasion every time I drove it. I regret not buying a V8 as the fuel consumption of 19-20mpg was probably close to the more powerful ones.
I still haven’t given up on the idea of buying one of these later ones one day, although with children, a 911 is more practical. To me, the SL is still the ultimate convertible and I look at all men driving smaller convertibles with an unhealthy level of suspicion.
Porsche 911 is not practical. At all. a huge myth. R129 is very practical though. Big boot. I think you easy can fit 2 golfbags there. Perfect storage in the back, either with kindersitze or not, great for shoppingbags. And if you want you could buy flagpole and transport it with the roof down 😂 Of course the 911 can transport kids, but how often do you want kids in the back high speeding a 911?
I agree about 280 SL R107. omg, That engine, slow, likes fuel very much and very loud at speed…In the W115/114 280 E(C) its perfect but not in R107..
I have a CL500 and SL500. Gorgeous V8s.
Best of the best! I Have a 500 SL 326 HP. Its a wonderful machine and car!
I recall the late Sterling Moss, having driven both, saying that he preferred the 500 to the V12 because the handling balance was much better.
Love the SL60 ! such a great car for cruising, if you know you know
id love to know how it compares to my sl600 ... great cars either way ....
I've always like this shape I remember biggie smalls having one in his music videos
The back seats are really useful for short journeys, I have had my ex-girlfriend next to me my girlfriend in the back with my brother who is 6 foot four short 20 mile journeys. Also I have my nephews in the back who was 11 at the time driving all the way to Cornwall from Surrey. Those backseats are one of the main reasons I won’t change up to a later model. Great video I love sl 500 r129
yeah right, no adults can fit back there in those fake rear seats, only the european ones had them.
Your shirts get better and better😂
Still a stunning looking, muscular beast! My brother borrowed a 500 and it certainly got attention sitting on the drive.
Very smooth editing, great video
Never even heard of an SL60 before! Thanks for this, James, I feel educated and informed...
I know it as the SL600. I think Harry from Harry’s garage has one.
@@VolkerHett, I think that the SL600 is a bit different. This SL60 has a V8 engine and the SL600 has a V12 from what I recall...

Hey I know that's a fursty merc but for god sake man,
Syphon off a little petrol, soak that shirt in it and give it a lit match.
I drove C140 body with this engine and guess it was even heavier, but I should tell you that’s yes, that engine does it’s job right !!

405 ish BHP and 580 Nm - 428 lb/ft
381bhp👍
piston head is right, it is the 6.5 m119 that makes 405hp, this is just chinese whispers that the 6.0 makes more than 380
@@raycroal no it's not, they've been dyno'd at over 420 hp and that's now. There is a Dutch channel who has done it on CZcams.
@@ahemgee9542 so what does the 6.0 m120 amg make 490bhp???

It’s my old car. Had it from 2010 to 2016. Faultless . Nothing went wrong on it. Really comfortable and quick. Not as quick as my s600 but almost. Really quiet until you flawed it.
what model of s600 did you have?
Nice PBCD Easter egg. You have to try a 335d now though.
Have always loved these
Simply superb!
I think compared to major rivals of its era like BMW 850CSi this is an example where less is more and vice versa.... BMW e31 was technologically advanced to this SL but Merc's 4-valve engine was right that absent ingredient BMW was missing....in the other hand BMW had 6-speed manual gearbox which wasn't even optional extra for Merc....
Watching Jay driving this suit-dressed bruiser it brings to my mind what Clarkson used to say about these high-volume AMG engines...."If you add it tongue...it would go round licking windows...." More bonkers than AMG top end creations were only SLR and Brabus cars...
Some say, from current perspective, that SLR doesn't seem to be that sporty by its stance and performance.... but can you just imagine SLR with manual gearbox like e.g. Viper?... it wouild be a widow maker...
What a lovely car
Luv that shirt!
That is a majestic vehicle tbf :O
Another great video! Not sure if you're just really enjoying the cars lately James, but your natural personality is really coming through and making them very enjoyable to watch. ..and the Merc looks (and sounds) a lovely big old beast too!
didnt see the car. kept showing two guys talking. odd
Love my 2014 Mercedes ML W166
I'm not a Merc fan but can appreciate them.
I just look at what they have become now and sigh!
Cars that you used to dream of owning (if you ever won the lottery) are now are a dime a dozen, all gizmos and so-so quality.
They still make some special cars and we know they still have in them.
What destroys their resale value is the cost of maintenance, repair and spare parts. Yes too much unnecessary electronic gizzmos that fail ad cannot be relaced. A modern version of the Gullwing [without the gull wings] and of spartan design would be good.
All the SL’s I’ve ever driven, and I’ve driven most ‘60’s-‘90’s, have that solid & majestic feeling. My 1st choice would be an early ‘70’s SL280....I’m an old fart (not a boy racer)
They charged £100,000 just to make sure the buyer could afford the cost of the petrol‼️💸💸💸
Could you include a little history of the car and things in your review? Just something extra would be nice I dunno, I don't review cars so who am I xD
What kind of things?
@@JayEmmOnCars the basic running's of the car , common faults found in the car the consumables of them that are expected to be replaced not tires etc but such as common rust points things too look out for as i find with looking at older cars are important when going to buy one since looking at one in a review you might be inspired to but a lot focus on the drive of the car which is important but in the day to day running's of one it is useful to know the small things
@@gavinearls2935 The thing there is when I do that, I almost certainly get stuff wrong or leave things out as I am not an expert on the models. There will normally be plenty of guides online helping you find out info like the kind you're looking for
I'd love a car like that
This dude is amazing !
You are the next generation Jeremy Clarkson.
the 6.0 m120 v12 is also known for having over 400 hp
Originally it made 408 bhp , but then they detuned it after 1993 to reduce emissions. At this time the power dropped to 389 bhp.
With the hard top on, is this a quiet ride?
Would definitely benefit from a performance exhaust I think, way too quiet for an AMG V8!
I agree
The days before AMG became chav chariots
It’s my old car. It has a performance exhaust. I paid 1.5k for it . It’s an eisenmann exhaust. It’s only my channel.

Watcing it again after suggesting Jay should do a video on one of these 🤦♂️
nice motor
czcams.com/video/VcPsWhFLbpc/video.html
Everyone saying it's a myth that these make 400bhp plus. Well here is a stock example with over 150K Kms making 415 hp and 437 lb torque on a dyno.
They did underrate the engine to keep the V12 600 top dog on paper.
The earlier pre merger 500SL 6.0s did likely only make around the 380hp mark however.
if only you had known how to apply a windscreen correctly ;)
God I can tell you love the sound of your own voice haha
You ever speak about him like that again.
Wait a minute, so some knob took the interior from a later Silver Arrow edition car and installed it in this SL 60? Way to ruin the value of the car. 🤦♂️
Just looked up the 0-60 of the SL-320. It’s about as fast as my swift sport with 100 more horses. How much does it weigh?!
Basically two tonnes. Physics dictates it takes four times as much energy to move twice the mass
Basically as much as a small moon then?
@Jeb Swarf quite simply, Torque. Torque is the force and strength which helps push the car along. Hp is a measurement of work. Basically a diesel engine with 200hp should be able to outrun a petrol engine with 200 hp. A manufacturer will post claims of identical figures but thia simply is not the case
@Jeb Swarf your absolutely spot on there, its a difficult thing to theorise and explain accurately. The other thing to consider is the gearing is usually between a petrol and diesel due to the different characteristics of thr engines performance
@Jeb Swarf interesting. The GTD vs corolla shud have been close. GTD will run out of ability at 4k before having to go up the ratio's. The T sports power band being higher and longer lasting can afford to stay on power for longer before changing up. Like i said ordinarily the diesel car will be geared accordingly, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and maybe even 5th will be slightly shorter on a diesel with the shorter power band in mind. Im not 100% convinced im totally right but i think im pretty close
this is not the first car tuned by amg after dm chrisler took over amg
It's "one of"
Is the sl60 a euro sl500?
No, it is different to the SL500 (which we also got). It has an AMG 6L V8
I have had 3 MBs and am not a fan. The SL 320 is fast enough for any highway in the world.I have 2001 SL v6 and you cannot get radiators for them. The problem with Mercedes Benz is their spare parts.
D Duckman
Ever tried eBay ? You can almost get every sparepart to the R129 there..
Actually it’s the other way around. You can get all for Mercs..
These are known for being shitheaps unfortunately. Not only that but the SL historically isn't a fat landboat, it's a sporty tourer. I think the break away of that gen has led to the irrelevance of the current SL
I would disagree with you there. The R129 was the last quality built Mercedes before Chrysler's accountants stepped in and started messing things up. The R129 of all engine sizes feels solidly built and oozes quality detailing. I am told the sweet spot for buying one are the years 1996 - 1998. After this Chrysler's influence was just starting to be felt with minor changes. By the time the R129's replacement arrived, the R230 in 2001/2, things really were going down hill and your comment is hard to argue against! It takes a deep pocketed, brave and partially sighted person to buy an R230!
@@baronridgeback i will agree with you on the engines being solid, I know someone with a w124 and it's been very good to him. These SL's however do have many problems especially with the convertible top and faulty electronics.
You're wrong these are known for being incredibly reliable. The only thing you were correct on is the convertible tops can be problematic.
@@louisvidalinc2678 you are not wrong about the convertable top and to some extent the electrics. Most issues seen today with the tops are due to the 11 hydraulic cylinders required to operate the roof now having 20 plus year old rubber "O" rings failing under pressure. All the "O" rings are DIY replacable if you are handy with a spanner and have time on your hands, otherwise it does get expensive for the professionals to do it. The elctrics got a bad name on these cars largely because of a front wiring loom fitted only to 1993, 1994 & 1995 cars - the rubber sheathing material breaks down (goes crispy & brittle) and starts allowing electrical shorts and ensuing chaos until the loom is renewed. A large number of these cars will by now have had the replacement work done so odds of buying one of theses cars are begining to deminish - one to watch for though. The other common electrical issue relates back to that roof & the electric windows. The cause is mostly as a result of the car having been jump started which fries the electronic controller responsible for operating them. NEVER JUMP START AN R129!! Remove the battery and bench charge it else fit a new one and keep it perminantly on a reputable battery cycler - particuularly if it is a rarely used garage queen :-)
Not really a fast car but a really nice one
Jay you will drive something more extraordinary this summer. (Hint)
Will I?
What on Earth is he talking about, he said I don't know why Mercedes put little back seats in these cars???
SLs are two seaters and don't have rear seats!
Rog5446 they were an option on the r129. I have one with the rear seats and one with the storage shelf. 10 year olds can fit in the back, as long as the driver isnt too tall. But it is a squeeze
@@ranbirlally8799
My SL has no rear seats and the SL60 shown on this video had no rear seats.
If it did have rear seats, rear passengers would be under the wind break, which was right behind the front seats.
This SL does indeed have the rear seat option.
Rog5446 you keep the wind break down without the black insert and then the seats can be used. Thats why you’ve got the rear stow in the boot
Rog5446
It does have rear seats you just fold down the roll bar down and take of the wind break
This car cost about as much as a gen 1 R8
V12 and only 400hp? Lol. 4 cylinders can be 50php from tune and bolt ons.
I think you miss the point though.
Not in the 1990s they weren't.
That Ebutuoy Guy it’s a v8 not a v12. The v12s were the standard 600, 70,72 or 73sl. The engine zonda used

this car does only make 385hp the 400 plus myth comes from the brabus 6.5 litre m119 engine which makes 415hp but if you repeat something often enough it is amazing how many people start believing it.that said 385hp is more than enough when you have tweaked the final drive and tcu
