As an Italian, he is the best goalkeeper in the world. He is 40 and still is easily in the top10 goalkeepers in the world. He has been top3 for a long time too. The national team never had to fear with him in goal, now we suffer a little because we still have a great goalkeeper but he is only 19. He debuted when he was 17 at Parma against AC Milan, a team that at the time was top 3 in Europe, and did not let them score (I am an AC Milan fan). Italy won the World Cup in 2006 and a key player in that victory was Buffon.
He is an amazing goalkeeper,he is regarded by many as the best ever,he never conceeded a goal for 900+ minutes,he won the world cup,he won everything except the champions league,he have this consistency in his prime,he is 42 years old now and he is still great,he won the best goalkeeper in the italian league 12 times,and best goalkeeper of the 21st century of the past 25 years,he have the most consecutive clean sheets with 10,and he is also one of only twenty-five players to play at least 1000 professional career appearance,and a lot of individual accolades,he is really a legend

A goalkeeper can't touch it with his or her hand if the ball was passed by a friendly player, ONLY if the last touch was done by an opposing player.
Otherwise it's hands, which is illegal in football.
PS: That is why you will see some keepers save with their head, if it's for instance a failed pass by a friendly that is abut to go in, but he is not allowed to use hands..
You should watch his long time teammate, Alessandro Del Piero. Juventus, Italy legend. Worth the time i promise.

Julio César: the Brazilian used to rival with Buffon the place of number one of the position about 8~10 years ago. Retired in this year.
Rogério Ceni: the Brazilian is the GK who most scored in football, with more than 100 goals in career. A penalty and Free Kick specialist. Current he is manager, leading the Brazilian Série B.
Oliver Kahn: the German was a giant of the position in the late 90's and early 00'. A reference when the subject is goalkeeping.
Manuel Neuer: the best represent of the modern "sweeper goalkeeper" role, which is a GK with behaves like a extra defender, organizing plays with the ball possession and defending its goal even outside area.

Some of those saves have history which makes them more interesting. Like the save #1 is his debut with the national team where the first goalkeeper got injured and Gigi got subbed in and that was one of the first saves that he made during that game. Also save #8 was the world cup final and he saved that from Zidane the france captain. Gigi says that is save was the most important save that he made during his career, and that save made italy reach to the final time and will the world cup in 2006.

If you haven't seen him already, I definitely recommend you to watch Oliver Kahn. Craziest keeper I've ever seen with all respect to Gigi.
A keeper can pick the ball up at any time in open play, as long as they’re in the box and as long as the ball wasn’t passed to them from a teammates feet, but it can be headed back to the keeper or shouldered, kneed, chested etc. There is a time limit for how long they can hold it though.

You got to do one on Oliver khan it's a German keeper forwards were truly scared of him, and his own players were scared of him too ...it was a maniac in the goal
I played in goal all through school. As you said the positioning is a large part of what you do. Minimising angles to make it hard for strikers.
The hardest saves for me were always low strikes. I'm 6ft tall and getting down to the bottom corner is much harder than aerial fingertip saves. I've dislocated my shoulder doing it which wasn't fun haha.
But you have to be prepared to get kicked in the hands, legs, face. You get hit by the ball in all sorts of places you'd rather not but your first thought has to be getting the ball safe. You worry about your veg afterwards.

I'm brazillian and Brazil has its shares of great GKs but Buffon is such a presence in the pitch. Its unreal.. A wall and a natural leader.
I also think that the GK plays the top spot in morale. Playing with a good keeper gives you a boost in confidence and playing against one can be scary as hell... You feel sometimes that no matter what you do, you won't be able to score.

He is still playing at age 45...obviously not at the same level but still as a pro. Perhaps not the best on pure goealkeeping technique but most likely the best goealkeeper who ever played the game.

Actually, the term we usually use in football is "save" not "block" when a goalkeeper stops a goal attempt. But that's not wrong, it's just unusual... And, yes, a goalkeeper can pick the ball up, but he can only stay with it in his hands for 6 seconds. In his feet, all the time he wants, but it's a little bit dangerous 😂 Good work, btw! I really enjoy your videos! 🙂

To be a great goal keeper you need to think like a forward and not a goal keeper. Close angels and learn how to fall
The goal keeper is often the loneliest position in football because they often don’t get to celebrate with the team when they scored. The goalkeeper in my opinion is the most important position in football because if they are really great,they can keep team in the game and can prevent them from losing or coming out with a draw.

No, actually you don't bring your arm down to catch your fall, not unless you want to break your arm that is. It is way better to keep loose and fall on your shoulder, maybe roll. You'll have contusions and pain, but that's part of the game. And yes, the goalkeeper can pick up the ball with his hands, but only if the last to touch it was an adversary, if the last was one of his team, it's a red card foul.

Nice reaction , you were right of his age and experience , goalkeepers are very often the oldest men on their team cause this position NEEDS much experience and cold blood.
Some games you have to play only 2 or 3 times for 2 minutes but you have to perfect , it's the most pressured position , cause when you attack you can miss it's ok and then try again , but miss for a goalkeeper means a goal , so yu can't never fail as a keeper

You can only pick up the ball (as a GK) inside the GK box, that big box where the penalty dot is in. Once it’s outside that box a GK can not pick it up, if he does it’s consider a foul or even sometimes a red card, it depends. Nice video! I love how you react to them! You’re a great youtuber! you have a lot of coments here, maybe you won´t read this, but, if you check keylor navas, you will see, nobody is such a fast as him.. he is unbelievable
Having played with and against good and bad goal keepers , it makes a huge difference/ If you have a crap keeper but the team you are playing has a good one, your team can be 20/30 % better than the other team, but you might lose because you have a guy that lets every other shot it, when the opposition lets in 1 in 4 shots, you have to generate twice as many chances to be level. (Same goes for Defenders, although Goal Keeper is so key)
They say the best Keepers are crazy, and I think that is true. Best Keeper I ever played with was just for one game. A guy knew a guy who knew a guy who was meant to be a decent keeper, We had no keepers for a cup game (after having 3 awful keepers in that season) Dude came down and played for us in a cup game. Dude was about 40 fucking mad look in his eye and had apparently just got out of Jail. 6foot of angry ex con, not gonna lie, I was playing right wing back , on his team and I was fucking scared of him. I cant imagine what the opposition thought.
He spent the whole game cursing like he had Tourettes on just about every play. No shit he was legit , we won and he made a crazy save on the last kick of the game, to keep us ahead and win the game. The 2 goals were totally not his fault (one of them was my fault, guy I was marking lost me and got the ball and slipped a forward in in the 2nd half, for a few seconds I was not sure if the Keeper wanted to throw hands at me, lool). Although the bastard terrified me, he was bloody good and I did not usually play in defence so I would not have had to face his wrath too much, I wanted hi to stay but he never came back

I liked Buffon but for me was not the best GK I ever saw, for me, the two very best were danish Peter Schmeichel and belgian Michel Preud'homme.. these days for me, the very best GK are Manuel Neuer (Fußball-Club Bayern München) and Allisson (Liverpool FC)... also we football fans cant forget about Lev Yashin .. the famous Black Spider GK from Dinamo Moscou.

The goal keeper is the only player on the football field that is allowed to use his hands. He can pick up the ball. When the goal keeper picks up the ball, the rest of the players must move out of the penalty box so the the keeper can pass it to a teammate and continue play.

The goalkeeper can control the ball with his arms for 6 seconds. If the ball bounces on him on a save it is not considered control of the ball. He can not pick it up again after he releases it.
