  • How to connect your phone using only one phone with hotspot on. I named my wifi hotspot the exact same name (and password) as my wifi router. I believe you have to initially set this up with either wifi available or two phones with one hotspot on. After the initial setup it will work every time without the second phone or wifi. The video shows us starting out using WiFi, but that was for clarity only.
I believe also that the Chromecast wants to go to its original wifi source if it is available. I had to shut my wifi off to get Chromecast to connect to my hotspot at home. Outside of my home it starts up using hotspot with no problem at all.
I'll try to answer questions but I'm not a super techy guy. I just know this works. Chromecast should be way easier to use than it is!

Now this is what I am looking for. It worked for me using only my phone as the hotspot, and casting the same phone to the tv. No second phone as hotspot. Thank you so much. And of course, for that to happen, you need to set up the chromecast beforehand using 2 phones. One acting as the hotspot, and one having Google Home app for setting it up.

Alright, guys. After reading all the comments, I could see the confusion. Here's what worked for me.
In order to use only one phone to cast to your tv, you need to do this:
    1. Make sure you have 2 phones to set up the Google Chromecast.
    2. One phone acting as the hotspot, another one is the main phone that you intend to use to cast to the tv.
    3. Install Google Home app on the main phone.
    4. Turn on the hotspot or mobile tethering on the second phone (not your main phone).
    5. Set up your Chromecast using Google Home app on the MAIN phone.
    6. When it asks you to choose your wifi network, choose the wifi hotspot from the second phone.
    7. Alright, now listen carefully. This is the trick that will make this 'casting to Chromecast using only one phone' works.
You are going to trick Chromecast into thinking that you are using other wifi, but what exactly happens is that we are going to use your main phone's hotspot as the wifi and cast it to the tv using only THAT phone, no other phones involved.
    8. So, this is how we do it. Go to your hotspot setting on the MAIN phone and change the hotspot name and password to the ones on the SECOND phone. They have to be exactly the same as the hotspot NAME and PASSWORD on the SECOND phone.
For example, my second phone's hotspot name is 'MyWifi', and the password is 12345678. I am going to name the hotspot on my MAIN phone exactly as 'MyWifi' and change the password to 12345678.
    9. Turn off the hotspot on the second phone. You'll see that your tv says that the wifi is disconnected.
    10. Now get ready for the moment of truth. Turn on the hotspot on your main phone. Wait for a few seconds, and you'll see the tv says that it is connecting to network 'MyWifi' (your wifi name).
    11. Once it is connected, then from now onwards, YOU ARE GOING TO JUST NEED ONE PHONE to use with your Chromecast anywhere you go.
*The KEY of success is to copy exactly the name and password of your wifi network (mobile hotspot or router that is connected to your Chromecast).
Please note that if you reset your Chromecast, you need to do this all over again.
    Good luck.

Because most of the hotspot services I know have data limits, usually 10G. Would I be using hotspot data limit on merely having my chromecast connected to my phone via hotspot?

4º Turn on mobilehotspot, and Turn off chromecast and router
5º Just turn on the chromecast and just works with my phone without router. =).
The first setup of chromecast really need one router, It can be a router with internet or a second mobile sharing via the hotspot with internet, because the device need update and make the first settings... country.. password.. email.. devices name and blablabla.
After that, you dont need more router, just plug you chromecast in anyplace, and turn ON you mobile hotspot with or without internet and voila! =D All works without router and without internet!
Tested in Chromecast Ultra, Samsung Note 8 with Android Oreo.

My problem is when i travel with the chromecast and intend to use my phones hotspot ONLY.... The moment the HOTSPOT is turned on, the CAST button disappears from all streaming apps (youtube, netflix, prime, etc). I don't want to use cast screen and sacrifice audio video quality.
