You have a somewhat more gentle mindset than I do. After the second shifter change, I'd be screaming, pulling my hair out and throwing my cap out in the street. Sweet build and a great vid.
hahahaha thank you my dude! yeah it was so frustrating when the second shifter didn't work. luckily i didn't have the grips on yet so that helped a bit 😆 cheers!
That is a sweet ride mate ..... Great all round machine
Thank you my dude I appreciate it , this one is a lot of fun for sure !
Im a simple man gary posts video i got tea and biscuits and watch the vid❤
Hahaha what biscuit did you have
@@garysprojects My grandma made it! Grated lemon butter biscuits!
@@dunyalaryokedenhasmetlisav8201 damn ! Sounds awesome
@@garysprojectsI wanted to ask abaout a afordable single speed/pub bike/gravel or a 3 speed lightweight etc. type frame. Can you recommend some frame or how to get one cheap used or how to find good deals. Its hard to find here in turkey as a student.Any tips would be nice!I build a dirtjump octane one zircus already and looking to build a bike to go to between school and home.
usually i look for on the second hand market! or ask around maybe someone has an old bike they are trying to get rid off. that is usually cheaper ! good luck
I have to recommend SRAM. I ran into the same problem with Shimano.
But when you use a 9 speed SRAM shifter and for example 11 speed SRAM derailleur they will work perfectly.
And a plus is that they reach up to a 52 chainring.
What!! That’s sick , will have to try. Do they have a clutch derailleur?
Of course they have!
awesome!!
also worth noting SRAM road/mtb stuff is completely interchangeable too, I have Rival shifters with an X0 clutch mech on my gravel bike
@@jnxmck wow that’s cool, I def gotta mess around. I have a xo 9 speed derailleur but not clutch I don’t think
When i first converted a 3X to a 1x it was a trip, like so LIGHTWEIGHT pedalling 😅with a Hope 32 ring 💍, back to 3x now because of all the insane hills in Derbyshire
Ya 1x was awesome but make it hard to ride places. the jumps near me there is a big hill before it so I had to slap the gears on. Maybe I’ll convert it to a 2 speed rear in the future haha
You can use a Sram 9 speed shifter with the Zee derailleur. You just need to run an extra cable clamp washer at the derailleur cable interface and it works perfectly. I run this exact set up on my old DH bike so I have 9 speed clutched arrangement..
Wait really , what is that extra cable clamp washer thing ??? That’s awesome
@@garysprojectsI'll get my bike out and shoot you a photo on IG, as it is a bit hard to explain exactly lol
@@thesafedog hell ya thx g , would love to see it !
Kickass bike! Great video
Thank you my dude ! Stoked
Super bike, Gary! Love the rear derailleur!!
thank you my dude i am stoked !
Nice! After my afternoon ride, i see new video upload. 😊 I see the 24" Kona got a new gears!❤ Nice new Zocchi forks! Btw, nice work place you got there!
Hahah cheers ! It’s small but I make it work , thank you 🙏
@@garysprojects wish i had a workshop in my house, hahaha... Instead i work my bikes inside the house, and it makes a lot of mess... 🤣🤣 Btw, looks like your place has a lot of bike trails, and nice bike lanes. 😎👍🚴
@@Emz_Jhaye haha it’s convenient for sure ! Ya Melbourne is great a very friendly bike city 👍
thanks Gary, that looks like loads of fun, I'm jealous of the weather over there England is a cold and rainy place 90% of the time, great stuff
Thank you Reece , yeah we are pretty lucky to have good weather here ! Haha that sounds brutal !
Was thinking the EXACT same thing - 2°C and raining here in southern Sweden right now, jealous.
wow!! damn thats cold - it was like 38C yesterday
NZ is in the Southern Hemisphere so has summer when it's winter in Europe
@@Nick-lm9hg almost the same 👍 (as Australia!)
Keep the clutch on all the time. Only have it off when taking chain off or if you drop a chain.
oh really! i turned it off when i was riding home haha
this build looks clean 👌
Thank you my dude I appreciate that !
nice work bro
Thank you my dude 🙏
Great stuff Gary.. Wondering what grease you use? I'm from Melbourne also and a little tired of paying high prices for 'bike' grease. Can I just use a general-purpose grease from Bunnings for example? Thanks
Hi I use “red devil all purpose grease” hope that helps , cheers mate !
so cool! has the 9sp cassette come in handy yet? and how high does that seat go up for you?
Thank you ! Yes it has come in super handy , before the dirt jump spot there is a big hill and I have to use the lowest gear on the cassette. The seat post is quite long so I am able to put it all the way up when riding places. Works well!!
Sick bike dude! Wish downtube shifting was an option for your friction setup. Anyone every done a super janky bottle cage downtube mount to get it out of the way but quasi accessible?
thank you my dude! yes, i always wanted to try that but never gotten around to it yet. i have seen it on slope bikes where they wanna keep their cockpit clean and so they do barspins , maybe one day ill try that setup!
The dyna sys rear derailleurs have a much lower cable pull ratio than 9 speed and below. Old thumbies tend not to pull enough cable to move through the whole cassette.
Damn ! Thankful I got lucky then haha
pessoas que inserem a bike no seu dia a dia, são privilegiadas! Abraço!
Yes! I am very lucky to be able to do that 🙏🙏😊😊
I do not have a lot of knowledge about gear other than servicing my own old bike which has 3 front and 7 rear cogs. What cog combinations should I use? I always thought that there are 3 front cogs to relieve stress from the chain but you have only one on the front. Is having one front cog modern?
Ya you are right, the modern bikes have changed to 1x to help simplify and to allow more clearance from the chainring to the ground (when you are going over rough terrain ), for most of us , we aren’t riding too crazy so okay to keep what you have 👍
@@garysprojects so 3 cogs on front is still better, right? What cog combos are good?
Not necessarily, it really depends what you ride , for example sometimes single speed is better for short trips etc , you have to work out what works best for you
Watching this has given me the desire to convert my Raleigh Mountain bike m-50 to 1x9. Will a 9 speed cassette play nice with a 7 speed freehub? Whats a good entry level narrow wide chainring? Thanks
You will need a hub that can fit a 8 speed and up , usually they are a bit longer. Entry level narrow wild I get just from eBay, its called deckas , check out my 1x conversion in my how to’s there more info there 👍
For those damn crown races, I'm pretty sure if you have a sealed bearing headset you can just cut a slot in them since they aren't touching the actual ball bearings. Much easier to install!
Damn! I should do that , that would make it so much easier ! Cheers
Hey man hard to see in the video but almost it looks like you have no ferrule on that XC shifter? I can’t get my shift cables to sit straight in those suntour thumb shifters for love nor money - trying different ferrules (4mm) but have you got any tips there?
you're right i never have ferrules, the suntour shifter barrel adjuster is quite shallow so thats why it doesnt sit in straight. my own tip is to have the right cable tension & length to keep it straight or try a thicker / longer ferrule but that is tricky too! hope you can work something out !
Thank u brother thought I was going mad! Appreciate your help and beautiful build as ever. And I absolutely rate you doing all this with the nastiest set of tools ever 😂 never back down and get a vice
@@peteshadbolt3042 hahaha cheers brother ! Yes I have to get a vice one day !
In the end what I did is use 4mm jagwire metal ferrules and make my housings an inch longer - suddenly it’s looking great… 🤔
@@peteshadbolt3042 haha hell ya , glad it worked out
When it was single speed did you just manage to get a magic ratio so the chain was just long enough with no tensioner?
ya i just did the magic ratio - i have a video showing how i did it if keen
Give it a dropper post!
Ayy! Got a recommendation?
dropper seatpost would make this even cooler
That would be cool , the seat post is 30.0, maybe I can shim a 27.2
Awesome! What’s the song name on the riding part? Thanks
cheers mate i appreciate that! its called "Upsetter - The Mini Vandals" its from the youtube audio library
@@garysprojects thanks 🙏
You need a DMR 35or50 stem ,they have the SHORTEST STACK HEIGHT of any stem on this rock 🌎 at 27mm
That’s true ! Diety or funn or nukeproof stem will also work 🤣🤣 I’ve looked at them all
I knew as soon as I saw that 10 speed low normal that there was gonna be problems.
not worth it unless you got the RD with the shifter and cassette.
hahaha like watching a car crash ay. glad i was able to get it sorted, maybe upgrade the cassette in future
SUPERNICE!
Thank you 😊😊😊
Best decision!
Thank you ! Definitely easier to ride around now haha
Yo where are those jumps at?
Near the oval at studley grounds
Never heard of ZEE RDs :D.
They are downhill and freeride specific. Short cage and very sturdy
thats right! they are tucked in so they are less prone to damage :D
Why not go full shimano 10 speed? It's the best budget drivetrain choice.
It’s all I had on hand haha
a true environmentalist
Haha thank you my dude !
You should turn one into an e bike
Would love to get a downhill bike and turn it into a ebike !!
@@garysprojects would be sick as long as the battery will fit on the frame
@whitecloudmountainminnowpr6353 ya for sure , needs to be hidden
Do you want my address so you can send me that Bomber? 👀😅
🤣🤣🤣🤣 probably keep this one .... for now👀
Im not first 😭
It’s okay here is a medal 🥇
