Lol thanks for the shoutout at the beginning. I had a few pieces of supplementary info, hopefully people find it helpful. The total amount of time for Chun's low mk cancel window is 18f. There's 13f to early cancel (this is the same as Ken low mk xx jinrai, which is pretty hard to confirm reliably). Then there's 3 dead frames, where you cannot cancel at all. Then another 2f at the end to finish out the 18f window. Because it's pretty hard to confirm low mk in the initial 13f window, and you can't cancel in the dead window, every Chun aims to land their super cancel inputs in the last 2f. This is known as "late cancel." It also means that unlike most supers, it's possible for your cancel inputs to be too late AND too early. If you cancel your inputs at the end anywhere but those 2f, no super will come out. You can't link low mk into super. It's typically -1 on hit, and only has 2 active frames, so you'll never have enough frame advantage to link it into super. If you see a super come out late and still hit, they probably just cancelled in the late cancel window. In 3rd Strike the UI elements update 1f faster than the character animations. So it's slightly easier to watch the score, lifebar, or stun to get an extra frame to confirm. But in intense footsies situations you can't always spare the moment to look up at the UI, especially on arcade cabinets where the screen is very large and right in your face. So it's something you can do for sure, but probably only when you're confident your opponent won't be moving (her post SA2 set play for example is a really easy situation where you can watch the lifebar). The ability to hit confirm is not what makes Chun players strong or successful, it's just a prerequisite for playing her. If you can't hit confirm at all, it'll be hard to have success with her vs strong opponents. But just learning to hit confirm will not be enough. Ground game, neutral control, and playing around your opponent's parry are a few of the things that separate strong and middling Chuns from each other. The way you tried on hard mode at the end is similar to how I practice these days when I have time for training mode, because it most closely emulates real world experience. Game audio off, listening to distracting noise in my headphones, turn on random guard/hit/parry and only super on hit, watch the character sprite and not the UI, and practice vs both crouching and standing opponents. Of course you can't emulate tourney nerves, which as we saw at Frosty, hit everyone hard no matter what, and everyone will miss a few things even if they do it well in casuals or training mode. Thanks for the video.
It would be really cool to see this kind of challenges with other characters too, it also gives a way for new players to know something they can try and do to get better
I love the energy and expertise JM always brings. Most (not all of course) really knowledgeable gamers are kinda douchy or don't tend to articulate well and explain things thoroughly. This guy here? True Legend in my opinion. Generating interest isn't easy and you do it flawlessly. Hat's off good sir!
You are a far far better player than I will ever be, but I love how watching your face at 17:55 i can tell we share the same belief that the harder you press the buttons, the stronger the attack.
Looking at the Fightcade status bar and realizing that even JM is considered "C" rank has me feeling like I'll never catch up in this game, lmao. I'm trying to learn it now and my inputs and reactions are just not clean enough.
To hit confirm Chun’s super your looking for that smoke that comes from the confirm, soon as you see it perform the super, if there is no smoke, then no super, I know people that can do it just by the sound it make when you get the hit.
While the crouch medium kick>super combo is very important for chun li I think you're overfixating on it. She has several other ways to confirm into it like from back heavy punch, close heavy kick, standing and crouching light punch etc. She also has one of the best supers to whiff punish with as it's very fast and has lots of invlun to get through fireballs or more active buttons
The problem is that with 2MK > super, it stops characters from wanting to walk forward for fear of getting hit by the super and taking a ton of damage, which lets Chun Li sit back and get even more meter. It’s possible for her to get it otherwise, and it’s a good super on its own, but this confirm synergizes with basically all of her kit and the system mechanics.
It has no invul at all. And cr.MK xx SA2 mixed with Kara throw is her whole game plan. Those other buttons do cancel into super (cl.HK needs a workaround tho) but they are not for hitconfirming, they are for punishing. Her whole midrange threat is cr.MK vs Kara throw. As for actual confirming, meaty UOH and very meaty st.HK/6HK are the only other options.
That’s not to mention he wasn’t using the charge mechanic for causing pressure situations at all, making hit confirms more unexpected. Or any of her other big spacing tools.
“We don’t wanna super if they parry because that’ll get you blown up” oh if only it were so simple XD. I’m a chronic eater of chun-li super 2 after parrying crouch medium kick
I think it was ultradavid that was telling the story of when Capcom sent a beta arcade cab to wherever they all used to play and it was Mr wizard (yes the same one that was getting up to all sorts of harrassment shenanigans) that gave them the feedback that Chun's normals didn't have enough range.
I LOVE the fact you don’t just test it out in practice but also against real live opponents As well know what makes fighting against people way more interesting than cpu ever will be is the unpredictable nature of human beings I like your scientific method 👍
Whats interesting for me is that humans are more predictable than computers since human opponents usually have bread and butters and tendency you can usually exploit in the time you fight them in a set.
The first and only time I've beaten the game from beginning to end for SF3 was with Chun Li. She's not my character, but for some reason, I could beat Gill on my first try, which I normally can't do with any other character.
i dont even play street fighter but this was still a really interesting video. a similar thought process could be applied to "op/broken" things in numerous games.
Personally, I would say yes Chun Li is very easy to pick up and win especially if you're already familiar with 3s fundamentals. Back when I was playing with my older bro, Chun was banned as a first pick and we decided she could only be selected if one of us was in a losing streak Yun, also a top tier requires more work to really show that he's a top tier due to Genei Jin setups Justin Wong showed a video of him winning a casual match using only one button, mk. That's how easy she is to use.
Chun Li with super 2 is like bringing a knife to a fist fight. It's not quite a gun, but it's still scary. Things ago fine until she gets super, then you can't throw projectiles and her pokes can result in you bleeding out 40% of your health.
Ive never played a fivhting game and all content ive seen was with different audio om top of it, so this is the first time i hear actual in game audio and all i gotta say is WHY HAS NOBODY TOLD ME ABOUT THIS SICK ASS BREAKCORE BEAT GAWDAMNN
Chun in third strike is not the only top tier character, but compared to a high effort character like Yun you can easily see how she's relatively low effort.. allowing for more focus on gameplan, hit-confirms, etc.
Exactly. Against a good player no one even chun is a brain dead free win, but compared to everyone else she is insane. Sf 3 is mostly a game of footsies, and her pokes are just insane. Why does her crouch fierce go halfway across the screen? lol its crazy
Yeah, God Tier Chun will be shown in the 3rd Strike Event at Evo 2024 This year. I CAN'T WAIT for low forward, super x 10000 and genei-jin x 10001. Yay HYPE -_-
Not going to watch the whole video, but just want to say that a trick to hit confirming her cr. MK into super is to watch the stun bar. Trying to tell if a character got hit is not as easy as seeing the red bar spike up.
Nah man, watch the hand. At least for Ryu and Ken if the hand is in front it is a block or parry and if it isn't there they got hit. Still hard, and visuals change from character to character.
Chun and yun are definitely OP and needed nerfs. At least yun though is hard and requires a lot of work to win with. I don't think any character is brain dead to win with, but chun is pretty easy relative to everyone else. Just her pokes + super outclass everyone else. Her crouch fierce goes like halfway across the screen. lol
When I see the thicc I do the click. 😉 Kidding, good stuff here. Analysis style videos are always fun to watch even if it's not a game I play on the regular
So to cancel crouching MKick, or anything really, into super, do you qcf MKick but hit it MK early so it hits while crouching, then do it again to cancel? That's how I've learned it recently it's just hard to be consistent with it since I do mess it up/I can't react fast enough to notice the block and go into it. I also see ppl canceling into super from standing back heavy punch but I cannot find a video/anything that helps.
I noticed if you go frame by frame during the training mode segments, the damage and points tally seems to be registering 2 frames before the kick actually connects. What's up with that? Is it a quirk of 30th or something?
in 3s the UI updates 1 frame before the characters for whatever reason. Not sure where the extra frame is coming from but it could be a video/youtube thing too
While i don't disagree, this is another FGC term that you should have included in that video explaining esoteric fighting game terms and people using them incorrectly. Like i said i dont disagree in this case it just made me think that i have probably seen yt videos calling pretty much every character at one point or another "broken". So i guess the entire cast is broken? Same with SSF2X. They're all broken. Everytime a character has say an overpowered single move, or a glitch or anything that isn't perfectly neutral balanced, they are "broken". I think the whole term is just way overused and incorrectly used. A good example of an actual broken character i think would be Akuma in ST. But just because claw or Sagat is strong doesn't mean they're broken.
Yes, she does. CPU Chun li would do It a lot, but I don't really see players using It. I'm not sure, but i think you can't use It for combos, and it is pretty punishable on block. Not a great move.
I think you can combo into it, but it's not too safe, and not too damaging too. Still, ex spinning bird is sometimes used against meaty attacks because it has invincibility on startup and chun kind of lacks reversals otherwise
It’s funny how strong female characters are considered over powered. In my experience it’s usually male players. But why don’t they complain about male characters being over powered ? Chun li is and always will be the FFOSF! First female of super street fighter! And wining male opponents hate it!!! She is the FACE of street fight and they have seriously been trying to dumb her down every evolution while pumping up male characters!
She’s still a strong character. But she’s not an absolute monster without SA2. Without meter she’s low A tier. Her EX moves aren’t that big of a deal because you need save meter for SA2. Her damage output isn’t that good because you don’t want to use EX in combos. It’s her key attribute without SA2 and the gameplan is to use her enormous normals (her hit boxes are really stupid, like Back HP hits deceptively far) to keep the opponent and bay and build meter. Once you have SA2, she turns into S+ tier really fast. I’d really call it God Tier. The only other character with that sort of transformation with meter is Yun. Jenei-Ken is heavily oppressive and he builds it in two BnB combos. Back when I was playing 3rd Strike heavily, I always feared Yun players despite maining Chun. Yun is terrifying to play against; it’s nightmarish. I also feared SA1 Makoto players (I’m no where near pro or semi pro level and most of the people I played against weren’t either, but we were at the enthusiast level) because throwing out a random neutral move that was parried meant death. Imagine a world where Twelve was as good as Chunli simply because he could also confirm his super with all his normals too
Would that be enough thou? Is any one of Twelve's supers as good as Chun's SAII or close?
