Welcome to #UkuleleSummer - I'm looking forward to sharing songs you can learn and play BY EAR !! Leave your songbooks and music stands behind, grab your instrument and get ready to sing to the moon with me. :)
I'm such a sucker for a good sea shanty, and this one is no exception. Alas, it's not quite the "authentic" shanty I hoped for when I first looked into its origins ... Learn more on my blog: www.learnsongbysong.com/news

A braw rendition lassie...I first learned this wee song in primary school in Glasgow more than 50 years ago...Aw the best fae Scotland...
I’ve been to Scotland (including Glasgow), and what a beautiful country. I wish I could come back and see the Hebrides and the Shetland Isles, and also the Highlands since I didn’t get the chance before. Blessings to you.
Beautifully arranged and sung. The composer's name was Hugh Roberton and he arranged it (possibly to an older tune) for one of the great Glasgow choirs in the 1930s, about two decades after the islanders were evacuated. Life on Mingulay had become more and more difficult because of the lack of a harbour and the uncertainty of receiving supplies.
"What care we how white the Minch is" refers to the channel between the northern Western Isles and the mainland. The fishermen of Mingulay would have fished either in the North Atlantic or in the southern Sea of the Hebrides at the southern end of the Western Isles. Roberton used a fair amount of poetic licence in his composition. The most southerly of the southern islands still occupied is Vatersay.
Thank you for bringing this beautiful song to the attention of your followers.
Thank you for that, friend! I love learning the history behind songs like this. And by the way, I’ve been to Scotland, and what a beautiful country. I wish I could go back and see the Hebrides and the Shetland Isles, and also the Highlands since I didn’t get the chance before. Blessings to you.
I've been on the sea in a small craft in stormy weather many times and this song has seen me home.
Your playing and vocals are enchanting
Thank you from a south African in Portugal, your teaching method is very good, being brand new to the world of ukulele I look forward to more easy learning chords to get finger/ muscle memory going 👍
I already posted this comment on a couple of other versions of this song (a slightly tweaked version here). I am SO glad there are young folks like you keeping music like this alive. Quick question: I tried to look at your blog to see more of the history of the song, but the link is apparently dead. Did you move it to another site? If so, can you share the new link?
Anyway, I love love love Celtic music, and this is one of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard. As some others indicated, the performance is absolutely mesmerizing. There’s so much feeling in the vocals and the tune itself. Thank you so much.
Oh, also, I’m not a musician, but I do know a bit about music (not as much as you), and I appreciate the tutorial!
Learned this song hundreds of miles offshore. It popped into my head today and I had a craving to hear it. Lovely thank you! 😊
It’s the last island before hitting the big ocean!
First heard this lovely song done by The Clancy Brothers some sixty years ago. Richard Thompson more recently performed an excellent version.
This is one of my favourite sea shanties and I was honestly curious how it would work with a ukulele. Well done!
Beautiful! I love hearing you play and hum it, sounds gorgeous!!
