Roll the Old Chariot opens with "A drop of Nelson's blood wouldn't do us any harm". This is, no doubt, a reference to Admiral Nelson. He was killed at the battle of Trafalgar and his body was preserved in a barrel of brandy for the voyage home. The (totally untrue) legend is that when they opened the barrel, it was partially drained of it's contents. Somebody really wanted a drink.
Thanks! Cool to know. I can't wait to sing these with my adult children. Since our last name is Nelson they'll get a kick out of it. One is a history nerd, so he'll love this history bit too!
You really do such a great job breaking down strum patterns, it's so helpful and really broadens the students ukulele "tool bag" and makes playing so much more entertaining to the ears :) I also am a history/trivia geek and enjoy all your geekology tidbits.
You're great! I've always liked sea shantys as well. So fun to sing. I really love the bits of history that you teach as well. I think it's always important to know where what you're playing comes from and the context because then you can better express the true spirit of the piece. @
You're very welcome! I have several play lists that might interest you - Learn your first 10 ukulele songs, 3 and 4 chord songs, and New to Uke. Welcome to the wonderful world of ukulele. If you ever want to come to a virtual jam, I host one every Friday night at 7 pm Eastern. See my Facebook page or Instagram for details.
I enjoyed this and will have to come back to practice these rhythms further. Perhaps you already know, but just didn't mention it specifically, but the Rio in sea shanties refers to The Rio de la Plata in South America. It sits on the east coast between Argentina and Uruguay.
@@TheUkuleleFool I haven’t but your teaching technique works for me. I’ll look for them, my left hand, right hand and voice aren’t playing well together yet ;)
Being working through these for the past few weeks . What a great selection of songs . So much fun . Are you considering doing a beginners music theory set of videos ? That would be great!
Glad you are having fun. I love music theory - I used it all the time when I taught public school. I will put that on the list after I get the fingerpicking courses done.
@@TheUkuleleFool Sail away - Hans Hartz Sail away, you can fly On the wings of freedom you can reach the sky Saill Away, dream your dreams ... So, wonderful 😢🙏🕊🌈
I love this little booklet and I've played it many times. However, I've still not quite got the hang of strumming and singing Bound for South Australia. I can play the quite simple strumming pattern, but annoyingly cannot incorporate the words with the strumming. As soon as I start to sing I lose the strumming pattern. For Rio Grande, I can change the chords easily, but cannot strum the pattern at all. I get completely lost. They will both be a work in progress for some time I think.

This is a lot of fun and pretty challenging with the Em an B. I'm enjoying playing along with you, Lisa. Thanks.
The Wellerman is fun song to help you with those challenges.
It’s a great day to play Sea Shanties with Lisa! Thank you!!
Yes it was!
Wow I like the wellerman it's my favorite sea shanty
It is such a great song. The Wellerman company was like the old-fashion version of Insta-Cart.
This play along is a dream come true! Thank you so much!!! And so fun to get a shout out. Big grin here! Thanks again!
You are so welcome!

Thanks for the history section. It wasn't until I was editing this that it dawned on me the Nelson's blood probably wasn't like a Bloody Mary.
My daughter absolutely loves these, we play sea shanties on irish whistles, and she was excited to see them on ukulele.

Thanks so much for the lovely feedback Linda. I hope you can make it to the lesson on Saturday. I look forward to meeting you on Zoom.

I love Shanties 👍⚓⛵
I just did a workshop last month on how to use Sea Shanties with ukulele groups. They are a blast. Great opportunities.
Thanks!
Thank you so very much!

Thanks for sharing that. I am a history nerd. I did know that, but it is great to meet another person who wants to know more about the songs we sing.
Super fun songs! Thank you! 😊
Glad you like them! I hope you downloaded the chord charts to go with them.
This was lots of fun thank you!!
Glad you enjoyed it!

Ships Ahoy matie!! Enjoy these.
"i subscribed" and am glad i did great vids
Love John Kanaka but drunken sailor is the best, sea shanties seem to be the thing in the UK at the moment
It is a thing here too. I can't wait to work with uke groups and show them how much fun these songs can be.
I love both!
Wonderful 👍 can you make a “Sail Away..“ Tutorial, please? I love it 🌈
Tell me more. I don't know that song, and I couldn't find it on CZcams there are several Sail Away.

Sail away - Hans Hartz
Sail away, you can fly

Saill Away, dream your dreams ...
So, wonderful 😢🙏🕊🌈
No, Joe Cocker its wrong. Sail Away - Hans Hartz. Sorry 🤔
nice and fun.
Thanks!

Bound for S. Australia is hard. Keep working at it - I know you'll get it.
thanksssss 😂
Glad to help. Thanks for leaving a comment.
😀
Thanks!
Very good ... How about cockles and mussels!
I did a tutorial on that song. It is considered a folk ballad, even though the heroine of the song derived her vendor trade from the sea.
You can sing to me for hours 😊😊
Awwww! That's so sweet.
Too much of a chatterbox
Sorry- that is just kinda who I am.
