One of the joys of this film is, for once, seeing young people who are passionate about their scholarly lives, rather than seeing education as an unwelcome distraction from their all-important social lives.
Yes!
These are not people, they are characters serving an ideological agenda. This isn't Tolkien, this is some hack writers hijacking his name in order to push some retarded message by telling a story that never happened.
@@khatack what's wrong in seeing children being civilized? I think you are Christian.
@@andreyserebryakov2231 it's not diverse.
@@khatack what message is that exactly?
This has such marauders energy
Tolkien is Remus, the blonde one is James, Christopher is Peter, the dark haired one is Sirius (sorry I forgot their names
WHY hasn't she written a Marauders series!?!?!???
Yes! Also Dead Poets Society vibes
That’s exactly what I thought. I’m going through a marauders phase rn so I’m obsessed with them. The minute I saw the thumbnail I thought of them lol
yeeee i think so too!!
When I was a child it made no sense to me why Frodo could not return to the shire after the ring had been destroyed and that the fellowship was broken.
As i grew older and I learned about WWI; I realised Frodo never could go home whole, as almost no one could in "the lost generation" :(
There is a memoir called Testament of Youth written by Vera Brittain. It is a heartbreaking story of how her generation was marked by the losses of WW1. So many talents and possibilities snuffed out, bodies and minds destroyed. I wonder what world they may have created had they lived.
tolkien said a thousand times his story is not an allegory for anything connected to the first world war
@@scparker6893 I know, but the story is still about leaving an innocent environment and being traumatized by the arduous journey.
WWI might not have been an allegory for the "war of the third age", but the themes of war and the toll it takes on man is still in the story. You always write from your own experience, whether it was intentionally or not
I though he left shire because of the wound on his chest that he got from the fight against ringwraith, well or it could be that all the hobbit that has been a ringbearer in their life is invited to the undying land because it's not only frodo but bilbo and later sam also go the the undying land.
@@scparker6893 It's not. But even if it's not an allegory, whether it be in Middle Earth or on Earth, war leaves irreparable scars.
the transition from young to old Aegon II is remarkable
The chemistry between the young actors, as well that between their adult counterparts was fantastic.
And the dialogue was pure poetry! And the cinematography! For some reason the critics didn't like this movie, but I hope it gets some recognition through some awards/nominations.
I get that it wasn't accurate (I actually expected it to be inaccurate as I was watching it -- the fantastical flashes of LOTR cemented my conclusion that it was a much fictionalized recounting), but I think it was the spirit of his life and the bonds he made that the filmmakers were trying to convey and it worked for me. I attended the Tolkien exhibit this year, which was fantastic and all too small and brief, but it served as an excellent precursor for watching this film.
Anyone who expects a Biopic to be accurate is fooling themselves. The best a biopic can do is get at the heart of what one side of a person was like, since people are far too complex amd nuanced to be represented accurately. I think Tolkien did a great job at this, even if it couldn't cover the entirety of his person.
I agree with you about the chemistry! I very much enjoyed this film as an imaginative telling of his young life. Also it was such a poignant examination of the devastation wrought by WWI, when you see these boys so full of life, and think what they had to endure in the trenches.
Kk
aye, well if hollywood decided to make a biopic for me, I’d wish it to be more fantastical than it really is
@@oxfordpictionary I couldn't agree more. I mean to see what the war did to boys that young and innocent in the grand scheme of things, it just, ugh, it breaks your heart…
But yes, whoever cast these four young men did a fantastic job as their chemistry and friendship are quite evident from this scene alone - which honestly is so strong that this has got to be my favourite scene of the entire film.
7:00 is the “we should form a club..a brotherhood” part if you came for that😂

YESS
PSH IM USING THIS CLIP FOR AN EDIT
They actually found an actress who looked like Edith. Amazing.
Fun fact/Trivia: Tolkien served in batallion where Sir Christopher Lee's father also serve. Sir Christopher Lee's father also served in Boer War alongside Lord Baden Powell. Like it's been destined, Sir Christopher Lee played the character Tolkien made also Ian Fleeming's character (Ian Fleeming is Sir Christopher Lee's half cousin).
I want friends like them😭❤️
Me too
Me too
Likewise!
Indeed
Be one of them
The script is so creative and the dialogue is so fun to listen to. It really takes what would be a somewhat lackluster film and elevates it. It's just fun to listen to these young men talk.
True, the dialogue feels like your're reading one of the many poems Tolkien wrote in the Lord of the Rings. In theory it should be the most boring parts of the book because it's almost blatant exposition of lore and history of the world and yet the poems have a ring and beauty to it wich makes them fun to read. Not to mention that the dialogue is very creative and has some great quotes like the one where Robert Gilson (young) says "I can die in any way the Fates choose, that's not up to me. But what is within my power is to decide how I live. Courageously or Timidly."
Tolkien was such a huge nerd he made up full languages before he started to write a story around them and took part in writing the Oxford Dictionary.
There’s a reason why he was so good at writing, he not only loved it but had been studying books and language since he was a young lad. He then progressed through life becoming a professor ( I think in English, he was a linguist after all). All of this culminated into the extensive world and books of Arda more specifically middle earth
J.R.R Tolkien's prominent feelings for "Fellowship" came from his powerful bonds of fellowship at school with three beloved artistic friends. In WWI, he lost two of them, another was shell-shocked & he himself was in a coma-like state for weeks. "Deal ye one with another with the utmost love and harmony, with friendliness and fellowship… This goal excelleth every other goal, and this aspiration is the monarch of all aspirations." ~ Baha'u'llah, Baha'i Faith
_"We change the world! Oh good something simple. Through art, you clown! Through the power of art…"_
For those curious, the boys and who plays who:
• Nicholas Hoult as J. R. R. Tolkien - Harry Gilby as young J. R. R. Tolkien
• Anthony Boyle as Geoffrey Bache Smith, an aspiring poet, and the closest of Tolkien's friends - Adam Bregman as young Geoffrey Smith
• Patrick Gibson as Robert Q. Gilson, an outgoing and charismatic classmate of Tolkien's - Albie Marber as young Robert Q. Gilson
• Tom Glynn-Carney as Christopher Wiseman, an aspiring composer - Ty Tennant as young Christopher Wiseman
I've been doing my research, and apparently Christopher was "closer" than Geoffrey to Tolkien, actually was his first friend in the school, and he was 1 year younger, and one of the sons of Tolkien have the name of his friend Chris.
Also, I would like to add that Robert Gilson had a fondness for painting and architecture :D
@@jzz6342 Huh, I didn't know that, quite fascinating! Thanks for sharing! ❤
C.s. Lewis,., How 'bout him?
@@kristalt.7404I mean yeah, he was part of the Inklings at Oxford… but I’m so sad they didn’t mention him! 🥲
@@kristalt.7404 They met in the '30s I think.
The TCBS has indeed changed the world through art. Tolkien made a huge impact on the world of books and films since the LOTR was released. And the LOTR was (in my opinion) was based on their brotherhood, the fellowship that they had. Tolkien was totally devastated after the WW1 that he misses his friends. Through writing this book, Tolkien managed to express his feelings with the help of his creative mind and language. Trully a talented person indeed. Helheimr!.
I wish boys would talk and dress like these fine young gentlemen 🥺
Same for the women.
That's money you're smelling, dear.
You want people to dress well like decades ago? Raise the minimum wage to $25 per hour.
@@DanielMazahreh there was no minimum wage when people dressed like this.
@@GiraffeFeatures and there was also much more widespread poverty and people in rags lol
6:31 the way the music kicks in touches my soul every time I watch it over and over again..
some of thomas newman's finest work
Me too. It's so magical everytime and the piece of it right before Tolkien says "Brothers rejoin your comrades in this act of changing the world" it's just way too special to describe it with words.
7:45 - James, 7:59 - Sirius, 8:01 - Peter, 8:02 - Remus
Nah don’t disgrace any of them by calling them Peter Pettigrew
back when boys were classy, intelligent, educated, and cultivated! his friends did reflect who he was. Hail, Tolkien!
In the upper class yes
Whatever😜..... just kidding I agree🙂
Back when boys beat their wives and got away with it.
Back when your entire family would discriminante you because of your religion. Back when apartheit existed.
@@TheRoland19111 yes thank you for reminding us that bad things happened in the past simultaneous with good things. That's how the world works and you can appreciate some aspects of history, like how people dressed nicer and behaved classier, while rejecting others, such as apartheid.
And the fascinating thing is that they most definitely changed the world, through art.
I loved this movie more than I thought I would
Incredible to think what impact tolkien and CSL had on the world
ok but the post-war scenes of this movie was utterly heart breaking!
The real life fellowship, what an inspiration
The background music of this movie alone touched me enough, let alone the content
This reminds me of the HP Mauraders !💥
I really see Prongs Padfoot Moony and Wormtail in them
Who else is here from marauders edits???

I am taken by their performance !!
I FINALLY FOUND IT OMG IVE BEEN LOOKING FOR THESE CLIPS FOREVER 🧍♀️
Beautiful! Probably my most-favorite scene from the movie!
This is my favorite movie. Period.
I still stand by my statement. I think I'm probably the biggest fan of this movie. I have watched it a thousand times, over and over, yet it still doesn't get old. I love the casting of all the characters, the music, the themes...everything! Its as if this film was specifically made for me as an individual, I don't know why I feel this way...but it really does. I wish I was in this world, I wish I was a part of the TCBS, I wish I had friends like that. It really surprises me that so little people know about this movie, because it is pure art. The reviews online don't match up to the experience I get when watching it, its just simply superb.
Uh I love this movie alot.
And so came out with the most magical history of magic, men, elf and ect.
5:55 about than battle
"I wish it need not have happened in my time," said Frodo.
“So do I,” said Gandalf, “and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.”
"What's the wrong way?” Peacefully. Illness, old age. Anything other than battle.

Alternative title: the intellectual inbetweeners
This film is hands down the greatest movie ever made about an author. Everything in it is authentic and sensitive, and we are drawn into Tolkien's burgeoning creative imagination. The director, Dome Karukoski, has the courage to explore the subject of homosexuality in Tolkien's life through his relationship with the poet Geoffrey Bache Smith. The love that the two share is beautifully portrayed in the film, without being either prudish or heavy-handed. Nicholas Hoult is a brilliant actor and deserved an Oscar nomination for his performance.
Wait, are you saying that TOlkien and Geoffrey have in the movie is homosexual? Where did you get that from?
Wait, homosexuality? What BS. Tolkien was a devout Catholic and he described his stories, The Lord of the Rings in particular, as fundamentally religious and Catholic. Either Hollywood made that up or you've been so conditioned to see gayness in everything that you created that aspect in your mind.
@@canuck21 I think it would be the latter.
All the replies... don’t be like that a lot of the love is from the letters they exchanged so you can be devout and still be gay. God likes gays better anyways 🤣
