No Image / Black Screen on Xbox One | Reset the Video Resolution
Vložit
- čas přidán 31. 01. 2022
- If your Xbox One all of a sudden does not show any picture/just a black screen it might be due to something gone wrong with the output resolution. Resulting in that your screen or TV cannot display the image from the Xbox and instead showing a message saying "check cable connection", "no input" etc.
By resetting the output video resolution of your Xbox One you lower the resolution to 640x480 pixels. Something most TV:s and screens can handle without any issue. From there it is then possible to try different resolutions from the Settings like normal.
This works on all of the Xbox One Consoles, that is:
Xbox One (The original)
Xbox One S
Xbox One S All-Digital Edition
Xbox One X

Hi! Not longer than with a normal boot-up. If it won´t get off the boot screen something else might be off. I´d say try the procedure again and if nothing seems to work it might be worth testing a factory reset (instructions here: support.xbox.com/en-US/help/hardware-network/console/reset-console-to-factory-defaults ). Please bear in mind though that doing a factory reset deletes everything currently stored on the console. But as a last resort it might be worth a go. // Chris

I tried this, but for whatever reason, it never starts up in low res mode. I never heard the first or second startup noises. Only the noise that plays when you press eject but there is no disk inside
Now that´s very odd. Are you sure you´re pressing the correct buttons for the model you´re using? The second chime should appear after a little while. Are controllers connecting like normal (i.e. is the console booting like normal, even with the screen being black, so that you can still connect the controllers)? // Chris
@@GetThereFaster mine is doing the exact same thing everything is normal but it always just show no signal
@@iceefnlmao Super weird! You sure you pressed the correct buttons for your specific Xbox-model? What about the controllers, do they light up and connect normally once the Xbox is booted up (even though you have no picture) // Chris
I have the regular xbox one model and I tried it on my monitor and my TV… I hit the power button and eject at the same time (hear both noises), but nothing happens beside the xbox turning off and not cutting back on no matter how long I hold the two. I have a wired controller and tried it connected and disconnected… when the controller is connected on the black screen I can hold the xbox button on the controller and the menu for Turn Off Console, Turn Off Controller, and Resart Console all appear.
Any suggestions?
@@hotboient.3836 Hm, you do seem to have gone through most of the normal troubleshooting options. The only other thing I would recommend trying is to do a factory reset with the help of a USB-stick. Note that this will delete all data not saved in the cloud. A guide for this can be found here: support.xbox.com/en-gb/help/hardware-network/console/reset-console-to-factory-defaults // Chris

Hi! Thank you :-) I can try. What exactly isn´t as it should be? Depending on the exact model of monitor the preferred resolution etc will be different. If you haven tried already, try setting the resolution to 2560 x 1440 (1440p) to see if that does it :-) // Chris

Guys just hold the eject + power button till it shuts off completely (hold for at least 10sec while it’s off) and just power it back on to skip half these steps and you’re all good
Edit: Although still very helpful video I come back to this when I forget 😅
That I have not tried! Thx for sharing :-) Yeah I know the video turned out a bit "rambling on" >_< Thx regardless and nice to hear you´re coming back to it sometimes anyways :-) // Chris
What do I do if my Xbox only beeps one time and not the second?
@@lheyganlewis9008 Usually this indicates that the timing (when the buttons are pressed didn´t get completely right). So I´d recommend trying a few times. If it still won´t work and you let the console boot normally, does wireless controllers connect like they should or does it actually not seem to start up properly (apart from the black screen)? // Chris
Didn't seem to work for me. I tried these steps a few times, and all seems to follow the same sequence as you describe, however I never get past the black screen.
Hm, then at least it sounds the like video resolution does at least resets correctly. Have you tried any other screens and possible even cables? Some screens don´t like the 640x480 resolution either and might display a black screen there too simply because they don´t support the resolution. There is also the possibility of something also being broken regarding to the video output. Did anything specific cause the "blackout"? // Chris

What if the first time u hold the two buttons and hear the eject sound
Sounds like a timing issue with one button being pressed a little to much before the other. Otherwise I don’t really know I’m afraid. Haven’t heard that before at all :-/ Did you got it working eventually? // Chris
Hey. Did the video suggestions. Wasn’t working. Won’t even get the second noise and is stuck on no signal. Controller won’t connect either. I know this vidoes old but I would love your help
Hi! Sorry to hear it´s not working. First thing I would try, if you haven´t already, is to unplug the console completely from power for about 10 min. Then plug it in a retry the procedure. It is a bit odd thought that the controller won´t connect either. If that does nothing my next thing to try would be a factory reset using a USB-stick (instructions here: support.xbox.com/en-US/help/hardware-network/console/reset-console-to-factory-defaults ). Bear in mind though that this will delete everything currently stored on the console if successful. But as a last resort perhaps? // Chris
I just turned on my xbox one after 2 years it was working fine but then I decided to do an update and it completely crashed the resolution green Xbox logo shows up and is bad but I’m still stuck in the black screen after that leaves the screen no matter what I do. Not sure if you can help. Thanks!
Sounds like something might have gone wrong with the update. I´d try a factory reset via USB-stick. The process is described here: support.xbox.com/en-gb/help/hardware-network/console/reset-console-to-factory-defaults Please note that this will probably delete any not cloud-saved-files and saves that you have stored on the Xbox. // Chris

Will this work the Xbox series s ? I normally play on 1440p at mine but at my mums I only got 1080p n I can’t get my xbox to work for the life of me it just say format not supported
Hi! Yes it should! Just use the same combination as with the One S All-Digital Edition. That is holding the Xbox-button and the Pair-button. This should produce the exact same outcome. Hopefully the TV will accept the low resetted resolution and you´re then able to change it back up to 1080p. // Chris

My xbox hdmi port is broken, can I use a j5 create hdmi adapter to connect my xbox to my tv?
Hi! Sorry to hear that :-/ As far as I know you can not use USB to HDMI-adapters on any Xbox One console. Sorry :-/ // Chris
sir i have a question so my xbox one x lets me boot up into low res mode but as soon as i change it to 720p or 1080p it dissconnects hdmi and its still on but screen is black i tried it on 3 monitors and 2 tvs no use any fix?
Hi! That´s odd. Have you tried and alter any of the other settings in the video menus, like color profile, refresh rate etc. Might be something there that´s off. Otherwise I am quite blank to what could actually be causing the issue. Specially since you´ve already tried with several different screens. I don´t think it would have an effect, but if you haven´t already tried it, replacing the HDMI-cable with another one - just to rule that one out - might be worth at test at least. // Chris
Thanks so much I needed this
Happy to be able to help :-) Thank you for the comment! Thx again :-) // Chris
hello sir, i have xbox one original and my eject button is complaint. what should i do?
Hi! Now that´s a tough one. There is a way to reset the whole console via USB, which also should reset the video resolution, however this too requires you to push down the eject button :-/ I´d say the best bet it probably to check with any repair-shop to see it they perhaps can sort out the reset (and even better, maybe fix the eject-button). Sorry for no better suggestions, but without the eject button to press there aren´t (that I know of at least) any way to reset either the video resolution nor the Xbox itself. // Chris
I never coment on videos but this helped me a ton. Thank you very much!
Thank you so much for the comment! Happy the video helped :-) Thx again! // Chris
The resolution reseted but the xbox is now on a green screen of death. Do you know what's wrong?
Hi! No actual idea what could have happened. Resetting the video resolutions should technically not effect anything else with the Xbox. If you haven't already I´d try resetting once more. If the issue persists after that you could try a factory reset of the console (using a USB-stick) and this guide from Microsoft: support.xbox.com/en-gb/help/hardware-network/console/reset-console-to-factory-defaults Beware though that this will delete everything on the Xbox that is currently not saved to the cloud. Other than that I´m unsure what could have caused the green screen (usually there is another type of error involved in these, whether it´d be software or hardware related). Hope you´re able to sort it out and sorry for not that much in ways of advice :-/ // Chris
Hi this method has not worked for me and every game works except this certain new game I’ve bought any other suggestions??
Hi! Which game is it? There might be some know issues that causes the screen to go black when lunching it? Like that it forces some odd resolution or something. // Chris

Very useful video 👌
Thx a lot! Happy to be able to help // Chris
do u hav a video on how to fix the black screen of death on xbox 1s?
Hi! If the video does nothing to help then I suppose a factory reset is the next step, unfortunately. This can be performed even if no image is shown on the screen. Or, it can at least be started, using a USB-stick and following these steps: support.xbox.com/en-gb/help/hardware-network/console/reset-console-to-factory-defaults
Please note that everything not backed up with cloud-saves etc. will be deleted during the reset process. Otherwise I´d say having a repair-shop have a look at it might be an idea. Be sure to check the prices first though! Sorry for nothing better in way of a response. Good luck with it regardless! // Chris

Still not working for me, any ideas? Turns on perfectly normal, lights up, but nothing on screen. Done all sorts of button holds, etc
Hi! Does it gives of the two chimes like in the video? Have you tried to connect it to any other monitor/TV, just to rule out anything being off there. Also check the contrast and brightness settings on the TV just to be sure they have not dipped all the way down for some reason. // Chris
Low resolution doesnt work on my xbox. I hold both the buttons down but after some time it just ejects the cd in it but theres no second chime
That sounds off. The video is made from Microsofts instructions on how to reset the video resolution (found here: support.xbox.com/en-US/help/hardware-network/display-sound/tv-or-monitor-screen-is-blank-while-connected) and it should work. Providing that nothing else is wrong with the console.
What happens if you let if boot like normal? Are you able to connect controllers etc. after it´s booted up? // Chris
I didn’t think it worked either , but on the final step.! Hold the two bottons UNTIL the screen pops up.! Don’t let go when it bings, it won’t work! If you keep holding it, it’ll pop up on screen and look like it’s a 2003 Television lol.! I travel for work, stay in hundreds of hotels so doing this is daily for me.! I have an Xbox All Digital , controller sync button and power button. I can confirm this does work.! 5-15-24
Thank you so much for the input! Will try and do a little recap of all the tips in the comments and will definitely include this one! I however have had it work every time when releasing the buttons straight after the second beep. But guessing it perhaps can differ from version to version depending on production dates, console type etc. Regardless, a ton of thx for sharing your solution! // Chris
Bro thank you😭 mines was still set to 1080p and 144hz I’m at my aunts and it wouldn’t work at first I was scared shitless😭
Fantastic to hear the video helped! Thank you so much for the comment :-) // Chris
Please help me, i trying to do that, and what i hear is more lot sound from eject button, and after 10 second my xbox back turn off
That sounds odd. Have you tried performing the button presses several times? It is a little tricky getting the timing just right and unless there´s something else going on with the Xbox (broken start up files etc.) it should be able to generate the second beep like in the video. // Chris
I hold down the power button and turn it off, but the device turns itself on, it should not be turned on normally, can you help? My device is xbox one s
That one I haven´t heard before. First thought goes to that there might be some power options regarding auto-on for installing/downloading updates? Does it turn back on immediately or just random? Otherwise it might be worth disconnecting it from the TV for a while just to rule out the TV wakes it up via HDMI-ARC-signal. // Chris
i have the xbox one S, screen doesnt want to pop up, and it was on trouble shoot screen yesterday, and also when I try to hold both buttons down it only rings 1 time and doesnt ring again
Hi! It sounds like the console might not be booting up at all then? Does controllers connect if you leave it for a few minutes and then try and connect them? If not, it might indicate that something other than the resolution is acting up. Hard do guess what though. There´s always the option to try a factory reset using a USB-stick and a computer (as described here: support.xbox.com/en-gb/help/hardware-network/console/reset-console-to-factory-defaults).
However this will delete everything that´s not currently saved to the cloud. But if nothing else works I suppose that would be the next step to try. However if you haven´t tried it already and if you have the option to; connecting the Xbox to different screens/monitors is always a good idea first to see if anyone picks up the image and allows you to enter any setting screens. // Chris
Was able to change to a lower resolution but my Xbox still won’t work 😭 just a green start up then black except the turn off console menu with my controller
Hi! I´m far from an expert, but it does sound like something has gotten messed up either hardware wise or in the software. If the issue is software-related (fingers crossed it is) then doing a factory reset using a USB-stick should help the issue. Instructions can be found here: support.xbox.com/en-gb/help/hardware-network/console/reset-console-to-factory-defaults Please note though that doing a factory reset will remove everything from the console that is not backed up to the cloud, including saves etc. So only use it as a last resort. But if nothing else works it´s definitely work a try before possibly handing the console in for repairs etc. // Chris
I have a Series X. My son had not used the One X in a year possibly, it was sitting connected to another tv unused. I went to turn it on and get the black screen, tried a different TV, different HDMI cable, and this fix, still no display. Is it possible that the HD died? It does seem like the HDMI port on the one X is working, it does go black as if sending a signal for a second.
Hi! Hm, hard to say. Even if the hard drive would be dead I would say the console would still boot something (like an error message etc.). You could try performing a factory reset using a USB-stick, to see if that does anything. However this will (if successful) delete everything currently stored on the console. But as a last resort perhaps. Instructions can be found here: support.xbox.com/en-US/help/hardware-network/console/reset-console-to-factory-defaults // Chris
@@GetThereFaster I just tried multiple times, it did not work unfortunately.
@@owenheuston9571 Sorry to hear that :-/ It might be, like you said, that something is actually broken and needs repair or replacement. Not sure if it´s worth the money to take it to a repair shop and have they take a look, but that would be my next thing to do I suppose. // Chris
Thank you so Mich dude 😊
Thank you too for the comment! Happy to be able to help :-) // Chris
What if I try it and it don’t work are there any other way I could get it working on my tv the issue is I get video when I plug into a computer monitor but not on my tv it won’t reset as you show me to do don’t know why
Then I´d recommend plugging it into your computer monitor and then changing the resolution to 640x480. Then leaving it like that. Power off and then connect it to your TV. Hopefully the TV will then recognize it and you should be able to set it to the correct resolution :-) // Chris
Thank you. It worked. I havent played in 3 days.
That's awesome to hear! Super happy it helped. And thank you for the comment! // Chris
3 days?! I havnt played in 15month
@@dolphinpod2403 Now that´s not fun if you want to play. Did the video do anything to help? // Chris
@@GetThereFaster its making a scratchy noise and dosent work
@@dolphinpod2403 Scratchy noises is usually not a good sign :-/ Could be OK if they´re coming from the fan perhaps (and not from the hard drive). But even then I´d probably recommend having the Xbox looked at I´m afraid. Hope you can get it back to working condition somehow. // Chris
Hey i kept trying this but everytime i held both the buttons after the second beep it just kept turning off
Hi! That´s odd. Sometimes it can be a little trail and error getting the timing correct when pushing the buttons. Also, make sure the console is 100% turned off before powering it on. Might even be worth pulling out the power cable for about 10 seconds before attempting the reset, just to rule out it´s starting up from some kind of hibernation mode. // Chris
Very good. Yes thank you. Great!
Many thx! Super the video helped :-) Thx again! // Chris
My Xbox won't go into trouble shoot mode which is so annoying bc my Xbox is literally on its last life and sometimes when it turns off I get the green loading screen so I have to restart my whole Xbox this way just to play again. But now ofc when I need it most it WONT go into troubleshoot. Any fixes???
Hi! Hard to say what could be causing it not to work. You could try a factory reset using a USB-stick following this guide: support.xbox.com/en-GB/help/hardware-network/console/reset-console-to-factory-defaults Please bear in mind though that a factory reset deletes everything not saved to the cloud (saves, downloads etc.). So I´d use it as a last resort.
Does the Xbox just stays black screen now and nothing more happens? Does the console seem to boot normally otherwise (does for example wireless controllers connect to it?) // Chris
Thank you so much, saved me
