Scotland 1-0 England (1985)

  • The Home International Championship is no more but Scotland v England continues for an annual fixture (for now at least) in the new Rous Cup as the sides meet at a wet Hampden Park in May 1985. In a game of relatively few chances Richard Gough's header gives Scotland their only home win against England since 1976, with Sir Stanley Rous, 90, on hand to present Scottish captain Graeme Souness with the trophy.

    I remember being at this game with my younger brothers. We had tickets for the schoolboys enclosure, but managed to get into the terracing right at the tunnel. The ‘official’ attendance was 90,000+ but, as is tradition, at least another 15 to 20,000 got in without a ticket by slipping the corrupt turnstile workers a tenner. Good goal, good game, good result, goodnight!

    I boarded a coach at midnight on the Friday at Southampton and arrived in Glasgow at 10am after stopping at Carlisle Services. Big Saints Union Jack flag on display at the back of the coach and received dog's abuse from Jocks. Fair to say it was a character building trip apart from the prematch drink in the Rangers Social Club who treated us amazingly well. I had a seat in the main stand and met Lou Macari who was sat near me. My mate a terrace ticket behind the goal and had the smelly brown stuff kicked out of him all of the match !

    I am not Scottish. I am English, but I understand the passion of this fixture. The Hampden roar had an atmosphere all of it's own. Back then Hampden had a capacity well in excess of 100,000. I believe now it has a lower capacity? If only the FA and the SFA used this fixture as a pipe opener to their domestic seasons? For example, hold it Hampden one year, then alternate it to Wembley the following year?

      The Heysel tragedy happened only four days after this game was played. The 1985 Scotland v England game was originally meant to be at Wembley but was moved to Hampden as the authorities in London were worried about the chances of crowd trouble during what was a bank holiday weekend. There were several serious incidents of hooliganism at matches in England during the early months of 1985 which culminated in the Heysel riot.

    I have been watching English football since the early 80's and have always wondered how England has always had great left and right full backs
    often had mediocre national teams but always great full-backs
    it's a mystery to me

    Scotland has a good side then although most of them played south of the border so they would have been!

      Only 2 of the Scottish starting line up played in England at that time, Strachan and David Speedie. There were 4 Aberdeen players and 2 Dundee United players in the starting 11.

      Correct! But it wasn't today's game. Neymar would have spent about 85 minutes rolling on the ground screaming like a little girl.
      Aitken, Souness, Forsyth, McLeish, McQeen ect would be locked up nowadays. What a defence HMP Barlinnie would have 😂😂

    Well ive got to totally agree with you there and i think that it was most probably the reason it was more because it was Scotland v England than these fans actually being racist and even as a Scotland and a Liverpool fan off over 30 years there are good and bad in all so called fans.Even years ago i never knew much about what Munich meant but lived through Heysel and the Hillsborough disaster and if i ever here or see anything about Munich im the first to tell these idiots they are out of order.

      1985 racism was strife stop milking a situation as disgusting as it was it was 30 years ago you tool! Now if it happened recently then I'd be with ya but seriously it happened throughout football back then!

    • @Justdisco2
      @Justdisco2 Před 7 lety +4

      MyRammy1 shite, you English want to stain us with your racist views anyway Scots from Glasgow are known as 90 minute bigots T an old firm match we are not known for being racist for colour of someone's skin, that's a English thing.

    • @drunkwrestlingf7583
      @drunkwrestlingf7583 Před 6 lety +9

      I agree with you as a Scotsman. Anyone denying this was shocking is a fucking idiot. We quite frankly had no black players up here at the time (that I can remember) so guys like Anderson & Barnes had to take an incredible amount of abuse. There was Mark Walters who signed for Rangers a few years later who was showered with bananas and was the victim of one of the most disgusting scenes of racism I've ever seen by Celtic fans & others (I'm a Celtic fan in case you think otherwise).
      Hitting 40 now but remember clearly how much of a joke directing abuse at black footballers was back then. Tarnished an otherwise magical footballing childhood for me.

      Does still happen now - that's the problem. Especially in Europe. Players like John Terry actually saying it on the pitch but being defended by many
