England 1-2 Scotland (1977)

  • A match unfortunately often remembered for the post-match scenes in which the Wembley goalposts are broken sees Scotland claim a deserved 2-1 win at Wembley in the Home International Championship in June 1977. Gordon McQueen and Kenny Dalglish score for Scotland before Mick Channon nets a late consolation from the spot for England, as the visitors end a run of four successive Wembley losses. The match marks the final home match in charge for England boss Don Revie, who soon quits to take up a role in the Middle East. Contains the post-match views of pundits Jock Stein, Tommy Docherty and Alan Mullery with Jimmy Hill.

    The commentator does exactly what is right when goals are scored: Lets us hear the crowd cheering. Instead of speaking right away so that we as viewers don't feel the atmosphere in the stadium. Many of today's commentators could learn from that.

    • @bobbygillespie7687
      @bobbygillespie7687 Před rokem

      From the late 1950s BBC Scotland was guilty of cutting in and ruined the atmosphere with a sound drop along with the commentary team sounding like they had a heavy cold with a clothes peg on their nose.
      My father and I loved Kenneth Wolstenholme.
      The typical scene we were enjoying the full atmosphere with BBC England just as the teams are appearing SSSHOOOOCLICKNOCKKNOCKCLACK. Muffle Snuffle.¹
      When STV covered a game they missed the teams coming out and the K .O.
      In recent years TV and radio coverage is a collection of experts of clichés who say all that can be said about a game repeatedly.
      All I want is for silence from the commentary team and the studio
      Before the teams appear until K .O .
      Another annoyance are the Teams selection accross the screen.
      Years ago it was down the side of the screen or transparent both with just the right amount of time to see , hear and absorb.
      Ps I have gone off most of football;
      In recent years.
      A lot of the athletes in most sports are puffed up with pride and lack humility Rant; A Grumpy Auld man.

    I was at this game - one of the best days of my life. I was 14 and my dad considered me old enough to take along for the first time. Sunny London was a sea of tartan that day and we were stood behind the goal where King Kenny scored what turned out to be the winner and I remember being scared that the whole stand was gonna come down when Scotland scored - it was literally rocking underfoot! Outside after the game people were walking round with huge squares of Wembley turf on their heads and one guy ripped us off a big chunk and gave it to my dad who left it on the Tube! The next morning he cut a square of turf from our front lawn, painted a white spot on it and took it to the pub and told all his English mates that it was the penalty spot near from which Kenny knocked in the winner! They were raging! England Scotland was life and death in those days. Still is really....

    I am originally from Wembley and used to bunk into games as a kid (scallywags). My friend (13yrs) and me (11yr) at the time went to this game carrying St George Cross flags through the drunken Scottish crowd. They cheered us on, offered us whiskey and thanked us for coming, Edwards army stayed at home, that day. The Scots were drunk as Lords but we'll natured, they were tying scarves together and scaling the walls of Wembley like a castle seige😂. I am in Scotland now (holidays) and love the banter, I hope the union doesn't break up like the goalposts at Wembley.

      45% of us voted yes, try talk sense to the British nationalists in Scotland and tell them they were wrong to vote no and they'd give you a mouthful of abuse about how proud they are to be British and a bunch of Rule Britannia shite.
      England doesn't even rule itself and hasn't done since 1707. England would have ruled Scotland if it managed to annex it like Wales and Ireland, but it never. Hence the Acts of Union being about the unification of the Scottish and English kingdoms under one monarchy and government. Maybe one day England will have it's independence, too, just like Scotland.

    The crowd complained to the manager, if no im improvement you could have a riot on your hands, lights on and full striptease ensued, the scots cheered lifted there kilts exposing themselves to her and one another, after which the lassie said it was the best fun she ever had stripping, the scots passed a hat and she made a fortune...my brother said it was the first time he seen a naked woman and what was under an aroused scotsmans kilt !

      To Alastair Mackey: I'd say. This was puzzling: The same notorious England fans in the spirit of the times at the height of their hooligan heydays. The Scottish fans took over Wembley whilst fervent and high-spirited.
      Even in those days, England supporters slinked back, joining the mice and crickets.

      We lost lots of games after Ramsey quit & this clueless dick took it on. Shame that Clough never had a stab at it. We never got as good as the latter part of Italia 90 (whisper it quietly when mentioning Costa Rica in Genoa to the dark blue gloaters ;) )

    Ouch! Johnson smashes into a camerman at 5.03 - the poor snapper wouldn't have had time to get a pic of the winner lol.

    Me and my fellow English junior school mate were playing about at his house one day back then just after that game and his Jock Dad ( his Mum was English ) who'd been at the game took us in to the garden and proudly pointed at an approx 5 inch x 5 inch tuft of grass with a small bit of that low cheap looking plastic edge fence thingy squared off round it..... and proclaimed...." Look lads- Wembley!! LOL

    Second half of the seventies seems that Scotland was better than England. I believe it was in 1978 that Scotland played their best World Cup performance also. XD Haven't yet been watching World Cup back then - I started in 1986. Always have been cheering for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland XD

    Watched a few of the vids now amd the same thing said over and over again is how many of these "Jocks" plaiyed in England, as if somehow pre emptying it when you got your arse handed to you by a nation 10 times smaller than you!
    Just remember that in the 60's, 70's and 80's that the English that were regularly winning on the European stage either had 3/4 Scottish players or a Scottish manager, English footballl without us "sweaty socks" would not have won fuck all!
