Mameda no Bakeru | Ganbare Goemon's "Spiritual Successor" | REVIEW (Nintendo Switch, 2024)

- REVIEW | Mameda no Bakeru is a 3D action platformer for Nintendo Switch, a so-called "Ganbare Goemon spiritual successor," the latest from developer Good-Feel. It's been nearly 20 years since Ganbare Goemon fans had a new game in Konami's legendary series...so how does this 2023 title, Mameda no Bakeru, stack up as a surrogate to the underrated and sorely missed Goemon series? Well, I completed the game to 100% and give my impressions in the following review, so check it out.
This is a full, minimal story spoiler review the game, full title "Otogi Katsugeki Mameda no Bakeru: Oracle Saitarou no Sainan/御伽活劇 豆狸のバケル ~オラクル祭太郎の祭難."
GoodFeel was founded by Etsunobu Ebisu, who directed many classic Ganbare Goemon titles, and its staff consists of many people who made those games happen. Myself and other fans have been saying for years that they would be the best developer to revive Goemon for Konami, so it's great to see them put out a game like this for the Nintendo Switch.
Enjoy this mostly spoiler-free review, but more importantly, I hope you enjoy the game...fingers crossed that it gets an English localization and international release soon!

Merry Christmas, everyone.
Merikuri!
Merry Christmas to you too Jimmy !
A new @ImportGamingFTW video...truly a Festivus Miracle.
I've no grievance to air with you Jimmy !
you too buddy!
Hopefully you get a bit of downtime during xmas to game & relax.
Happy holidays 🎉
They really should make an international release of this game, I'm sure it would do well!
I'd buy it
Same!!
It looks interesting for me to want to buy it in a heartbeat
Highly doubt that it would but I'd definitely pick it up.
This is everything I want in a new action adventure 3D platformer! Such a classic feel to it. Reminds me of ape escape a bit. I need a port or something!
I'm on stage 36/50ish. Just wanted to say you don't need to know a lick of Japanese to play this game. The platforming and action combat is fun enough on its own and the game is very straightforward. I'm really having a blast with it. The game is absolutely full of charm and the locations have a ton of variety. Going through the levels and finding all the collectables is really fun and addictive. I highly recommend it as a Goemon fan and 3D platformer fan.
This looks dope. Really hoping Goodfeel can manage to translate this and bring it stateside even if Goemon never managed to move that many units in the West historically. Thank you for covering it and giving it visibility to the English speaking audience!
Watch this be a stealth release like 6 months later telenet shooting collection. I'll await penny's big breakaway if I'm wrong. Feels similar enough.
I just ordered a copy from play Asia. Didn’t want to wait 🤣
I think it can probably be enjoyed by non Japanese speakers because the dialogue doesn't seem super important to the gameplay. Maybe a game faq for certain parts
@The_SOB_II sadly I feel gamefaqs is dead given the quantity of new games. But yeah online walkthrough with Google lens for translating those menu screenshots if you want to do work and more for cutscenes.
@@The_SOB_II I mostly agree, but the fact that there is also so much historical Japanese lore in there (especially with the collectables it would seem) makes me feel like I'd be missing out on the full experience.
I had no idea this game existed, it looks insanely good, and the variety of level themes is extremely impressive
I understand, as the way I found out about the game was when CZcams recommended me the game's trailer that was posted on Nintendo's main CZcams channel. When I saw it, I knew I wanted to play it even though I can't understand Japanese.
Mystical Ninja 64 is one of my favorite games of all time....at the time, I wanted anything that resembled Mario 64, and this checked a lot of boxes but in a completely different way. Completely underrated game.
What an amazing game and world that was. Really hope it gets rereleased in some form soon. A masterpiece that has sadly fallen under almost everyone’s radar.
That game was my childhood I would like for them to remake it on the Switch or just bring it soon to the Switch N64 online
@@coolchannelize15Konami's supported Switch Online so much. They really should put both N64 Goemon games up. (As well as N64 Bombermans and Castlevanias)
One of my family members bought this game for me when I was a kid. I loved it more than OOT. the music made me dance I was constantly laughing at jokes, and so on.
I loved everything about it and no game scratches that itch, so I replay it every so often. I have it on my steam deck alongside goemon's great adventure.
Truly cant get enough
I agree, I adored this game
Goemons design is what really lights up my heart tho. Perfectly conceived character
I agree, he can never be replaced--none of those characters really can.
That's so reductive when this is absolutely a case where they could. It's so well encapsulated in it's general style, that you can't HONESTLY pretend that a green haired ninja girl and a fat thief carry the franchise. It's the complete artstyle what makes Ganbare Goemon of all franchises what it is.
Repeating talking points that have lost all meaning because EVERYTHING has a fandom regurgitating them, is not respecting the franchise for what it is. It's just respecting merchandising as a concept, like the Yoda guy in Spaceballs.
Take Doctor Who. The Doctor can be replaced and he's certainly more famous than Goemon. Plus an original IP and not a known folk hero like Goemon. But I'm not talking in particular about one character, it's that it is a series that's more built on theatrical tradition and impermanence as a whole, grander ideas. Some people were melting down some years backa bout NotMYPresident, but other sorts would say He Was MY Doctor. They are able to make that persoanl stand, over being drip-fed more content. Some franchises can do that, some fandoms can't.
For my money, I've played like 5 acrobatic platformers in the style of Mario 64. Mario can be replaced with Hat Kid all day long if this is the release rate, and collectathons just don't do quite the same thing, they make platforming about canned abilities you have to unlock.
I always liked the Kabuki inspired look he has.
@@ImportGamingFTWand should a been on Smash and Ebisumaru should a been a trophy and Yae should be assist
if they at least put out an English patch in the options menu, i will import this and pay for it. I want them to make more games like this
If they don't. I SWEAR I'M LEARNING JAPANESE! LOL.
If they localize this I will buy it in a heartbeat.
I really do hope this gam sells well and gets an English release. It’s rarely being promoted out here in Japan :(
I see it displayed prominently in game and electronics stores, and the GoodFeel website and YT channel had a handful of updates before release, but yeah, I don't recall seeing any advertising other than the CoroCoroComics manga. I was hoping to snag one of those retailer posters off Yahoo Auctions or Mercari, but...nothing!
When I look at this game, it feels like a mix between Ape Escape 3 and Super Mario 3D World, and that's a combination I'd like to see more of nowadays. If this ever comes to the US, I'd love to give it a try.
I’m glad I’m not the only one that’s getting those vibes.
Yeh I definitely thought those two games specifically as well. Maybe a little kirby forgotten lands too
Excellent review! This game has moved me to get back to learning Japanese not only for the sake of expanding one's own vocabulary, but also to honor the essence of this game. Also, a Goemon x Bakeru crossover would be awesome. Legit been thinking about this a few days ago. Maybe one day. 🤞
Awesome to hear, good luck with the studies!
Your Goemon shrine has me so envious. Those figures look awesome.
They're some of the coolest Goemon things produced so far--it's a shame they're so hard to find, and that there aren't more figures for the series.
cant wait for my copy to show up! you've really talked this game up.
Holy shizz!! 63 stages is crazy cool
Hope you get it soon, brother--yeah, there are a ton of stages, a lot of really unique ones, too. I far underestimated the time I thought it would take for me to beat the game and make this review.
Wow this looks like such a fun game. We need this brought overseas ASAP!
Don't count on it. Nintendo fanboys only buy Pokemon Zelda and Super Mario.
@@JoeMusashi1987That's not Nintendo fanboys. That's causal gamers.
Nintendo fans know there's more to Nintendo than those three franchises
@@URFTBOUND4LIFE Most Nintendo fans are casual gamers. Trust me. 😂
@@JoeMusashi1987 That's not what Nintendo fans are. You're thinking of the Wii era where millions bought it for Wii Sports and nothing else.
Nintendo fans are the ones who bought the Wii U and kept it afloat in spite of it's short comings.
Nintendo fans are the ones who backed games like Fire Emblem and Kirby before it went mainstream.
Metroid and Donkey Kong got new life because of Nintendo fans and those games are hardly causal friendly games.
Nintendo fans are the ones who rallied up demand for Xenoblade Chronicles to not be a Japanese/European exclusive.
It's also worth noting that 3D platformer perform better on Nintendo hardware compared to Sony and Microsoft platforms due to the nature of them focusing on multiplayer games and story driven games that appeals to older gamers.
Anyone who grew up in the era of the SNES or N64 would eat this game up.
It's mind blowing this hasn't already had a localisation in the works. It looks vet very high quality
Since they had to start from scratch with the cast, landing on a shapeshifting tanuki boy as the Goemon surrogate was a pretty inspired choice. Hoping for its success, if only just to get an english release and/or more games for this fresh IP!
Right, such a fun and clever choice!
It looks fantastic, happy to see it lives up to expectations! Here's hoping that it will be translated sooner rather than later, whether an official localization or a fan patch. This is definitely the game us Goemon fans have been waiting nearly 20 years for!
It's been a looooooong wait, but this game gives me a little more hope for the inevitable (fingers crossed) return of Goemon. But if not, at least we have something close, and hopefully get a sequel or two...or ten.
The graphics look pretty great to me, and the music sounds awesome. I have a hard time believing there will be an English release, though 😥 Those Goemon cassettes look sick! I wonder why Konami hasn't released some new vinyl for Goemon? I mean, they did a Wai Wai World record....
I'm the opposite, I have a hard time believing there WON'T be an English release. I would love for more Goemon CDs or vinyls to come out...and those things I showed weren't cassettes, but mini-CDs! Pretty cool either way, though!
Just to let everyone know, there's already a fn translation being worked with the first arc or so of the game already done. You know, just in case this game never leaves Japan, but honestly I think it will.
Really? Sick. Is it possible to play fan translated games directly on the Switch?
Great to hear!
The dedication of video game fans can sometimes really be quite amazing--happy to hear that there will at least be some way for more people to enjoy the game's story (and unchiku bits), though like you, I do believe this will get an official international release.
@@ImportGamingFTW Out of curiosity, what makes you think it will get an international release?
Hot damn, this looks legit. I've been looking for a new, casual switch game and this might be the one. I'm glad you got a 'spiritual reboot' to one of your faves that wasn't complete garbage.
This is basically the perfect new, casual Switch game--hope you pick it up, Casp.
I kept an eye on this game ever since it was revealed in that Japanese Nintendo Direct, went through some trouble importing it but MAN I had a blast playing through it. Such a fun game!
Happy to hear you had as much of a blast with it as I did!
Do you need to know Japanese to enjoy it?
Bakeru is probably the most fun I've had with a game for ages. Like Goemon before it, it's just a riot of imagination and although some of the transform power-ups are a little too powerful the sheer amount of stages meant I really had fun working through it over the holidays without having to struggle with an over demanding difficulty curve. Can't wait to see what translation horrors get performed on it if it comes to the west.
When I saw the trailer, I got so hyped! Seeing a game that wants to bring the joy of playing a similar experience to the Ganbare Goemon games. Wanted it to pre-order it from Play-Asia but will wait to see if they do an Asia-english version.
Fingers crossed for any localization--I am fairly certain Bakeru will get one!
3:55 "jubilant goons" is a beautiful assembly of words. Kudos!
Had no idea this was GoodFeel! Thank you for the spotlight!
Would be awesome to get an international release. Great video as usual!
This is such a well done review! I’ll absolutely be following you for more
Thank you, I hope you enjoy what's to come, as well as take a look at the back catalog of videos!
The way you pronounce the game titles is so awesome. Love it.
I was waiting for this video from you! Thank you!
Was really excited and following game since announcement, even tho I never played Goemon games, it's just visually looks so nice and striking that left quite an impression. Hopefully I'll get the chance to play it eventually.
Merry Christmas and early Happy New Years! Wish you all the best!
P. S. Separate thank you for looking out for us robot fans - including full transformation sequence with audio is very appreciated!
Thanks! And you know damn well I was going to include the robot transformation sequence! Hope you had a great Christmas and hope you have a Happy 2023!
@@ImportGamingFTW thanks man, but I'm more hopping for decent 2024, haha. Jk, fun typo. Still working, our holidays start at 1st.
I have never played any of the other Goemon games before but man this games looks clean as hell.
Cool review, and really cool to see that it succeeded at recapturing the goemon spirit! Will now hope for a translation, but thanks for all the info!
Thank you for this video and merry Christmas!
This somehow reminds me tons of the Ape Escape games. Is there any connection to that series too?
Thank you, Merry Christmas! I'm not sure of any Ape Escape connections, but I see the resemblance. I was thinking of comparable games when writing the script for this video and that game definitely crossed my mind!
Picking this one up! Thank you! Also got pole's big adventure for wii.
Well now I have to go import a physical of this. Thanks for bringing it to my attention!
i've been looking at this game for a while, looks really fun! thanks for the in depth review
You're welcome, hope you get to play the game soon if you haven't yet.
Damn this better make it to the international market, it looks so goddamn dope, like a throwback to 3D platformers of old and we sure as hell don't get enough of those these days. But having the melee buttons assigned to the shoulders worries me, as that always felt clunky. Remember that super-mid game BloodRayne? Yeah, that...
You can change the controls to attack with Y/X instead but honestly it doesn't feel bad to use the shoulder triggers
Thanks for the review. I was very curious about this game. Thinking about importing a copy now.
Thanks, hope you like it if you pull the trigger!
I was waiting for you to do a video about this Jimmy, thank you so much I think I'm going to grab a copy
Hope you enjoy the game, and thanks for your patience!
Been waiting for this review!!
Hope it helped clear up some thing about the game!
This game looks and plays so incredibly! I really hope it gets an international release. Thank you for surfacing it. It has so much charm and history behind it, I find myself feeling like a long time fan and rooting for its success.
If Mischief Makers comes back next I'll be so stoked
omg, must have this one :O. cant wait to get it downloaded on switch. thank you for making us aware of this one.
Dude, I can't imagine how hard it was to track down those Goemon doujin figures from Wonderfest. Nice collection! (Oh, and of course this video convinced me to get Mameda no Bakeru of course)
Great video! Just ordered a copy. Looks like tons of fun!
Happy to hear it--hope you got your copy and enjoyed it!
@@ImportGamingFTW I did! 100% completed it over last weekend. Very fun game.
This only got me more hyped for this game!!! I really hope we get an international release, thanks for reviewing this
Merry Christmas, Jimmy. Thank you so much for this review, it surely scratches that goemon itch and delivers a good amount of variety content too. Hopefully GoodFeel manages to get an international release despite being so "traditional"👺
Thank you, and hope you had a great Christmas--I don't see why GoodFeel wouldn't want to release this game outside of Japan, Japanese-ness be damned.
Thank you for reviewing this. I remember hearing about it coming out in Japan and almost forgot about it since there hasn't been any English version announcement. If there's any game out right now that would force my hand and just do my best to learn the Japanese in it, it would be this one.
Looks amazing! I hope it gets an English release!
Amazing video mate. Merry Christmas 🎄
Thank you, hope you had a great Christmas.
Yasss!! I want to hear more!
Honestly, as someone with no prior investment in the Goemon franchise, and as a huge fan of 3D platformers, I want this game. I want it so badly. It looks like tons of fun. I really hope Good Feel look into releasing this game globally, because we don't get quality 3D platformers on this level very often.
Was one of the highlights of my year it has it's flaws but i personally enjoyed it even more than mario wonder, the levels are really beautifully designed. While it's not totally able to top the inventiveness of the 2D goemon games it easily gives the 3D ones a run for their money. My only disappointment was there been nothing for finding everything that area with the last boss is pretty empty and would have been great to have added a few really challenging stages to do after finding everything.
Hope that it's not a stand alone game and they try to keep it going. Games that look like this do not come around often at all.
If I had a "game of the year," it's definitely Armored Core VI, but I think Mameda no Bakeru is 2nd, with Mario Wonder, Mario RPG remake, Octo II and RE4 remake trailing somewhere after. I agree with your "disappointments"--and fingers crossed for a sequel!
You’re the only person I wanted to review this.
Thank you, I'm happy to have obliged--I hope a lot more people do reviews on it, though, if only to get the word out and show there's a sizable demand for the game!
@@ImportGamingFTW Absolutely! If this is the first step to getting an actual new Goemon game, I’m all in!
Nice! A new jimmy video! Best Xmas ever!
Thanks, Ian--hope you had a wonderful Christmas with the family!
You sold me on this game, I need it
Honestly I felt like this game was destined for me to discover as I had no idea this game existed until a random recommendation from CZcams. So I'm convinced this would be something to pick up.
I was wondering when you would review this. I think you’re still the only review on CZcams. I absolutely loved this game and thought it was so much better than goodfeels previous works. Probably would make it in my top 5 goemon games as well. I can’t believe goemon is back and I hope they make a sequel. The game is pretty long as well and definitely worth the price. In my opinion it is a better game than super Mario wonder.
Loved Wonder, but yeah, I enjoyed this more, despite its technical flaws. I'm sure there are other, bigger and better reviews of this on CZcams, I'm just grateful that mine seems to be doing getting great views/response.
OMGAD, please I hope this comes out in North America. Been waxing nostalgic about Goemon series lately too!
Game looks great! I really do hope we get a western release for this title. I'm actually sulrised we didn't. Fingers crossed that we do.
Since GoodFeel self-published, I'm sure it would have been quite a bit harder and more costly to do a simultaneous worldwide release, so give it some time!
The game looks like a fun time and I'll probably grab it soon, but there is one thing I feel not just this game, but most 3D platformers look over nowadays. I've felt this way ever since Mario Odyssey released and I've yet to find another 3D platformer that does it, but if you're going to have currency, please include some neat alternate costumes to spend it on. I know there's upgrades to buy here too and the masks are fine, but I feel they could also add in some cool looking full body outfits based on more Japanese mythology, or maybe to switch things up, on those plus other mythologies from around the world.
Those are all fine ideas--maybe in an update/DLC, or the sequel?
I hope they put this out. Looks fun!
Great review, I am very much looking forward to play this game! The low difficulty is fine in my book, even though it would have definitely been nice if they included different modes that tweak the challenge a bit.
Thanks! I had to artificially increase the difficulty by resisting the urge to transform so often at the end of the game--I'd say playing just as Bakeru, the challenge is pretty fair.
Goemon is definitely a series I regret sleeping on, at least from the sound of it. still holding out hope that Konami will give us some kinda Goemon collection for Switch! had heard a bit about this one, though yeah really hoping for some kinda english release! a lot of it reminds me of super mario odyssey but meets stuff from the goemon games, like the giant robot battle.
im playing it and enjoying it very much. its been a long time coming.
Being a huge Goemon fan, I almost forgot this existed…then ordered it as a gift to myself for Christmas. It definitely evokes Goemon, but is very much it’s own thing. Such a beautiful unique little game….it really has some magic to it that I haven’t found around too often lately. Even in a great game like Super Mario Wonder. No fear importing it, it’s totally simple to play minus finding out a few of the menus.
Nice review and informative too, thanks. Agree mostly, though I like it easy, not bothered with frame dips and that wasn't spoiler light. Done with the game though, so I'm fine.
What's cooler than that flip? Bakeru slipping on ice "otto tto to".. that was a great touch.
Merry Christmas man. It really is a nice gift for us starving Goemon fans. I do find it funny how they picked Goemon's VA bak in the day due to him doing a lot of ninja and comedy related roles in various ventures, with Yasunori Matsumoto and now they picked Junko Takeuchi, the voice of Uzumaki Naruto, as the voice of Bakeru since Bakeru is a ninja tanuki disguised as a boy...which is similar to the Naruto pilot, where Naruto is a ninja kitsune disguised as a boy.
Goodfeel is wild.
PS : Wait a minute...the Kintaro form is sumo, it's based on Urashima Taro, Kintaro and Momotaro and the main hero can transform into them, Urashima Taro's form has fish reel and Momotaro has a gun? Now, it's a bit of a stretch but could they be referencing Kamen Rider Den-O with that, where Urataros had a fish pole, Kintaros was a sumo maniac with an ax and Momotaros was a brash hothead with a sword that often butted heads with the others, especially the head-in-the-clouds Ryutaros who was a break-dancing gunslinger? Well...colour me impressed.
These GoodFeel fellas are really clever--I wouldn't be surprised if they had some sort of Kamen Rider references in there. I wouldn't be able to catch them if they were there...I'm sure there are tons of things that we've missed!
Really hope this gets localized! Looks like a fun game. Thanks for the review.
You're welcome, thanks for watching--hoping for good news in the future about it getting localized.
Another excellent video. I hope your 'virility sacks' are also full and well.
Brother, my virility sacks are very well, but not so full. Thanks for watching, you should get this for your life partner.

Great review! Been playing through slowly over the holidays, I think it really nails the tone and Japanese aesthetic of a Goemon game, and each area representing a different prefecture really hearkens back to Mystical Ninja, but the stage design, transformations, collectibles, and general gameplay all feel more similar to a modern platformer a la Mario 3D World. It's definitely its own thing which is great IMO, I'm glad to see a new IP establishing an identity of its own rather than just aspiring to be a Goemon clone. Lots of indirect references to appreciate though, stuff like the "wise old tanuki" and Bunbuku's super punch/laser had me smiling. I have my gripes with it (Repetition with levels/music/enemies really starts to set in after a while, and I agree the game is easy but man some of those insta-death platforming sections are frustrating!), but I'm really enjoying it overall and hoping for an English release sometime soon!
These are the type of games I wait for! i remember playing Mystical Ninja back in 92 and I was hooked!
me and my friend were pretty much the only people in MS who played Mystical Ninja on N64 back in the day. we've always been obsessed with the game so I'm glad to see theres something in the same vein coming out!
This game looks incredible. I really hope there are plans for an English version
This is a really well made video
Thank you.
As a Goemon fan, thanks for showing us this spiritual successors.
You're very welcome.
This game looks really fun even if you aren't a fan of Goemon. I hope this gets localized. I loved Goemon on the SNES and N64 and would love to see a return.
Holy crap this game looks so freaking good! We desperately need this.
This game looks super fun. I am going to love playing it once i get my copy.
Hope you get your game soon--and that other thing waiting in the mail, in case it hasn't already arrived.
This game is stunning! Hope we get an english translation!
OMG, the game looks interesting and the design of the protagonist quickly reminds me of goemon... Hopefully and goodfeel I can launch it internationally.
I wish you happy holidays from Mexico.
Thank you, I'm hopeful of an international release--also, Feliz Navidad!
This game looks great! I hope it sees a localisation.
Great review, I think that I'll pick this game up (even though can't read Japanese!).

Great to hear, good luck with your Googlefied playthrough!

Looks fantastic!
Can't even describe how awesome this is, i love everything about tjis. im hyped for the international release
I'm happy to see all the hype for this game!
This game looks gorgeous and well polished, would love to see it in english
Will there be an English release for this?
I am fairly certain it will happen, might take a publisher other than GoodFeel to do it.
@ImportGamingFTW NIS or marvelous can do it
Awesome review. Just bought this off the Japanese eShop!
Happy to hear it--hope you're enjoying Bakeru!
It's refreshing to hear someone say "Goemon" correctly. Awesome video.
Thank you--and I love Ganberry Gooeyman!
I had never heard of this game prior to seeing this video and now I want this to release in english so bad!!!
Id love to play this. Hope it comes out in the US
The art style reminded so much of Goemon from the N64 era that's what caught my attention
まてまて!何?? I NEED THIS! also THANK YOU to the devs for providing phonetics for the kanji, Im still a babi when it comes to 日本語, but now I'm even more inspired to continue studying, I never thought I'd ever hear about goemon again
It really is like the ultimate study tool for Goemon fans at this point!
Heck yea~ this fills the void that mystical ninja left in my soul, I played the heck out of that game as a kid lol@@ImportGamingFTW
I was on play Asia one day, and I saw this game listed. I knew nothing about it. Based on art work, I CZcamsd it. A few seconds into the video, I bought it. It really reminds me of Legend of the Mystical Ninja. That’s one of my fave games of all time. I don’t understand Japanese, but so far, the game is really good.
Happy to hear you picked it up and are enjoying it--and Legend of the Mystical Ninja, what a game, top 5 for me, for sure.
Would buy it if it was available outside of Japan!
Really wish they ported it to PS4/PS5. Would definitively buy it.
Yeah, I'd buy it again on PlayStation.
I would totally get this if it comes to the West! Anxiously awaiting!!
I hope this gets an international release and its successful, the artstyle is great and the gameplay looks on point 👌👌👌
I loved mystical ninja on the N64, never got too far but it was such an interesting thing to explore what felt like a fully fleshed out world
