Been waiting for this one, good comparison and very informative!
Great video as usual Jack! ❤️
Thank you for watching!
Thank you for this video! I feel validated with my purchase (k ultra) which also happens to have less retention and noise than the niche. As an added bonus you get a mini 30 sec workout and the family appreciates the quietness.
Thank you for watching. At first I wasn’t convinced I did the right thing buying K Ultra but now, after it is seasoned, it became one of my favourite grinders. Do you agree with me about it’s flavour profile for pour overs being on more fruity sour side?
@@Jay37_tech hi, it has enough settings for everything but capacity might be an issue. If I remember correctly it can take 40g at once.
@@Jay37_tech congratulations. Please let me know how you like it.
@@Jay37_tech this grinder shines with light fruity coffee. And it gets easier to grind once u use it more
Just started watching you, very good videos keep it up
Thank you for your support!
Thank you for your videos! I'm really enjoying your style and personality.
I just got the K Ultra as my first "serious" grinder, and I am really happy about both the espresso and pour over performance.
At some point, I would want an electric grinder, and I really like the aesthetics of the niche zero, but I'll have to think about whether it's really worth it, considering how close it is to the K Ultra.
Maybe I'll go for the Niche Duo then as well, to have both a conical and a flat burr grinder.
Thank you very much. At first I was a bit sceptical about K Ultra but now, after I seasoned it a bit I think it is one of my best hand grinders. You should be happy with it. I probably won’t go for Niche Zero for your setup but flat burrs grinder is definitely worth considering. I will tell you more about Niche D once I get it.
Great video. Has been so interesting to find your fascinating channel. I've been looking at a better/bigger hand grinder primerily (currently Knock Aergrind) due to not wanting yet another elec appliance in my kitchen sitting out 24/7. Our intended dual boiler machine is an absolute thing of beauty so I can happily stare at it all day! ❤ But grinders meh. So I had, already targeted the K-ULTRA so am thrilled that you feel its a Niche taste equiv so this seems to be the elec grinder to get. Super validates my selection so thank you Jack. Hope your channel grows even bigger you are a fountain of taste knowlege and a pleasure to watch and learn from. Shame you don't get a kick back from 1zpresso for all the good press you give them!
Thank you very much for watching and all your kind words.
K Ultra is one of my favourite multi purpose grinders but I would still consider an electric grinder for daily use, simply because of convenience.
All the best!
Great video as always! I was considering the Niche Duo, but I ultimately decided to go with the Timemore 078s. I can't wait for it to arrive, hopefully sometime in June! I plan on doing blind taste tests comparing it to my K Ultra, it will be interesting to see which one wins.
Thank you. Please keep me posted with the results. I got Timemore 64s for few reasons but mainly because it is cheap 😛
this comparison would be very interesting for me aswell! in general - manual vs electical grinder comparisons, very exciting to see!
Nice comparison Jack. As always I appreciate how you describe what you are tasting in real time. I have been pulling shots from an HG-1 prime and JMAX back to back for the last few weeks. I have tried many different coffees and I cannot believe how similar the taste is between the two grinders. Honestly I would take the JMAX over the prime because I prefer the workflow and grinding on the JMAX. Both grinders produce very smooth blended flavors with little to no unpleasant astringency or bitterness. Comparing the Jmax to the JX-pro is a different story though. The JX-pro is consistently brighter, less sweet and less smooth for espresso. Keep up the good work!
Thank you for watching. Interesting results from J Max and HG1. I would expect the workflow of the latter to be much better. Have you recorded any videos on that?
@@mycoffeeshow111 I haven't made any videos. I find the prime is just much harder to grind with because it takes so much force to hold it in place. If it was mounted, I'm sure it would be much better to use and probably not far workflow wise from an electric grinder. I should say when both grinders are properly dialed in they taste very similar, but the HG pulls better shots when it is not dialed in well. Essentially it is hard to pull a bad shot on the HG, whereas the Jmax develops astringency easier when it is not dialed in properly.
@@maxuttech1028 thank you for the info!
my experience with my prime is much more favourable than yours. having granite worktops the prime just sticks to it, no bolts required. can easily grind with one hand and grind speed is same as niche duo for 21g.
have just ordered k-ultra to go with picopresso for my many nights away working..... not yet arrived!!
prime is my favourite so far, had zero, duo, df83 and sage smart grinder poo!!
use prime for my latte and duo for my wifes americano

Great videos Jack! Going through your videos now! I'm looking to buy a picopresso and a hand grinder to go with it... Hard to choose one... Commandante, izpresso, kinu! Aghghhhhh
Thank you. I have a video about Picopresso as well 😛. Any of those you mentioned are good options. I would go for Kinu if you are only after espresso grinder.
Hey I like your comparison videos. Keep them coming. Thanks.
Thank you for watching. Next week we are comparing two ssp burrs.
@@mycoffeeshow111 Cool. Looking forward to it. What I don't see among many folks who review products is the longevity factor. I understand it's not easy to predict when product is brand new. But are there specifications which can directly/indirectly predict average life of the product. In case of burrs, will the performance gradually decline over time (let's say after 1 year of daily use). In the end, is the extra $200 charge justified. I work in tech industry where we analyze component roadmap of vendors and make decision based on the factors. Sometimes we wait for few months before picking certain component either because we think we can get something much better because of new technology or process introduction. From buyers perspective we expect the experts like you to tell us whether to buy something now or wait little longer.
@@littlestar5737 thx again for watching. Companies like ssp or Kafatek give you estimations of how long should their products last. As for myself, I can’t afford to hold too many gadgets at the same time. I buy things, use them a bit and sell to fund next projects. So far, apart from my Crem One dual boiler I haven’t had any malfunctioning issues.
Hi Jack
What is your recommended grind settings on K-Ultra for:
*Pour over
*Espresso (Flair pro2)
For light roast Ethiopian coffee
Hi, try 2.5 for espresso and 6-7 for pour over depending on brewer.
When You compare pour-over cups You prepare both glasses at the same time? or how do You keep them in same temperature? When I did comparisons myself i kept both glasses in hot water untill their temperature was even. How do You calibrate grindsize? For espresso total brew time is good, but how about pour- over? Maybe I am overthinking but I consider using kruve sifter for this.
All your points are valid. I was considering sifter but after thinking a lot about it I decided it is not good solution. I set the drain time to certain nr, let’s say 3 min and want both cups to be within 20 sec of that time and each other.
As for temperature, it doesn’t drop that fast for pour overs but I try to lower the temperature of the second cup a bit. Obviously using the thermometer would be better. If I compare grinders that I know well, I also mention flavour profiles one can expect while using them. It wouldn’t be fair to judge any machine on just one shot or cup anyway.
I got the K-Ultra last week and I feel no need for a huge electric grinder any more. I put my 6-year-old motorized Capresso grinder on a high shelf, and in a couple of weeks, I may throw it out.
It takes me 40 seconds to ground coffee by hand in the K-Ultra for a 12-ounce mug of pourover or French press coffee. When I factor in the set-up and the clean-up required with an electric machine, the K-Ultra is actually more convenient.
Congratulations. You should love it. It is currently my favourite hand grinder. I even compared it with high end electric grinder and it was still very strong contender.

This is my sequence as well. Took even longer to grind with the Capresso because I did a slow feed. The K-Ultra is much faster for me and the quality/consistency of grind and flavor of coffee are superior as well (V60).
Comprei um K-ultra depois de ver seus vídeos. Parabéns pelo trabalho! Saudações do Brasil.
Not sure what it means but I take it as a compliment 😛
@@mycoffeeshow111He said: "I bought a k ultra after seeing yours videos. Congrats for your work. Greetings from Brazil."
I'm also from Brazil and i'm seeing your video because i bought a k ultra yesterday. 😊
@@arianeaires2482 thx and congratulations. It is a very good grinder. In fact K Ultra is my favourite hand grinder now.
Very interesting. I ve been enjoying my K max for quite some time now, interesting to know it's basically a niche zero without a motor when it comes to pulling espresso.
Lifehack: i buy the crema arabica espresso 1kg bean bags from Lidl. I've bought countless bags of artisan coffee, and i can't tell enough of a difference, but it annoys me a lot to calibrate shots. That coffee just works for me. I have a PID modded Gaggia classic pro with the fancy spring upgrade thing.
Thx for watching. This is one of my older videos. I used K Ultra now for a while and still like it alot. It shines with light roast coffee while I would choose Niche Zero for medium or dark.
As for the coffee from Aldi, as a coffee snob I obviously can’t agree with you 😛 What I do agree though is that if you enjoy it, enjoy it, why not.
@@mycoffeeshow111 Lidl, not Aldi. I don't have the patience to recalibrate shots every 250g bags, and lidl has such scale that they can actually sell good stuff for cheap, and fresh. But I'm not in the UK, so my options for roasters kind of suck anyway. You do you :)
@@pierrex3226 I see your point. Next time I am in Lindl I’ll look for that coffee. So far each supermarket coffee I tried was bad.
Hey Jack! I've just found your channel. I'm in the market for an used Niche. Is yours still available? I live in the UK
Hi, thank you very much. I sold it long time ago. I’m planning to sell my La Pavoni though if you are interested.
All the best!
@@mycoffeeshow111 The La Pavoni with the eagle is tempting but I don't think I'd be able to take it back to my country when I finish my studies here. I've got too much stuff. Thanks for the fast response!
@@camiloaguirre3897 good luck with your studies!
Hay Jack! I'm in the market for a hand grinder for both filter and espresso- what would you recommend?
Hi, K Ultra should be worth considering. If just for espresso I would say Kinu. For pour over only Comandante is also great.
@@mycoffeeshow111 what is better in youre opinion k max or k ultra? ( has a multi purpose)
@@dommymac7458 K Ultra seems to magnify fruity sourness which I really enjoy.
@@mycoffeeshow111 I enjoy chocolate, caramel flavours
@@dommymac7458 K Max could be better for you than. The difference is taste is very subtle anyway especially for espresso.
