Alan Partridge is a bit of a challenge for non Brits to get. The character is so well crafted, probably the most fully formed character ever created in British comedy. So much so that Steve Coogan can easily improvise in character, he has written autobiographies of Alan partridge as Alan Partridge. The whole personality and history of this character is fully mapped out and realised. The whole character is deeply embedded in the culture and era of British TV and radio of the 1980's. He makes so many references to this and there are so many nuances to his insecurities, his prejudices, his narcissm and what he values as man of a certain age, generation and class, from a certain place and culture that it would be difficult for anyone not familiar with all of that to get or really find funny. Of course there is some universal humour in it too but by and large it is incredibly niche. However I think if you watch both seasons as well as the other things he has done like, knowing me, knowing you, mid morning matters and this time, you will start to get some idea of why he is such a funny and cleverly written character.
I normally grab a pillow to hide behind when watching horror movies - I do the same when watching Alan Partridge - it's pure genius - my surname is Partridge and my Dad actually thought Alan was a real tv personality - and was so PROUD !!!! ( promoting the Partridge name ) lol
It makes more sense for first time viewers start with "Knowing me knowing you".
Matthew Perry watched some of the series while filming Friends the wedding and thought it was the funniest programme he had seen! RIP
Christmas day is the only day of the year when we open our dining table out fully. Christmas morning, me and my wife will pull it from each end and I always say "yes, it's an extender". She just looks at me with a puzzled expression.

His chat show was called " Knowing Me, Knowing You" (from the song by ABBA) - hence his "Ah-Ha" catchphrase, that the real estate agent didn't recognise. His chat show was cancelled after Alan accidentally shot one of his guests.
TBF, it wasn't likely to be renewed anyway, with the terrible ratings, amateurish - even lackadaisical - production and expense (particularly of the Christmas special, which they were obliged to go through with even after the untimely death of Forbes McAllister, who was also the only guest Alan managed to ask a genuinely insightful question) of the show.

This is the show that led to things like The Office. Despite the sets with four walls, they still filmed it in front of a live studio audience due to how comedy like this tended to be done (The audience had to watch on monitors, but it was done live). A few years later laugh tracks weren't cool anymore, but this was the transition period. Also worth mentioning this is a favourite show of the likes of Mathew Perry and Ben Stiller.

Here for this all the way. Alan Partridge is up there with the greatest of all time. There are some British references that might not resonate with you guys, but most of it should I think/hope. Interesting to see how it goes. Oh and definitely see 'The Day Today' for some early Alan Partridge backstory, from when he was a mere TV news sports reporter.

For me, this character has the most sophisticated writing of all British creations.
I'm Alan Partridge is up there with the best of british comedy. Its gets better as it goes on, but really peaks in season 2. All I am saying as a clue is James Bond.
I had never really heard of Steven Coogan before Tropic Thunder. Then I watched an Alan Partidge movie special. I haven't tried watching the show yet, but it's got British The Office vibes to it.
The ups and downs of Alan’s entire career for the last 30 odd years has been documented in these series. He shot a guest live on his talk show in the 90s, but he really bounced back.

Alan Partridge timeline: The Day Today = spoof news show, Alan was the Sports reporter. The Knowing me, Knowing You = Alan becomes a tv chat show host (the guests are all fictional creations). Then this season, where he's relegated to being a regional radio DJ... then there's a few shorts and a movie , ALPHA PAPA... and now there's the latest one where he makes it back to being a TV presenter on a daytime show.

If you can understand all the nuances of Alan Partridge, you'll have a decent feel for the UK and what we laugh at and laugh with. Its an incredible body of work. Coogan is elite.

I don’t know whether Americans will get Alan Partridge. It certainly bears sticking with. He’s by far my favourite comedy character and Coogan is a really good actor.
You’ve still got to do the Alan Partridge / Martin Brennan bit. Only 5 mins - his funniest and edgiest sketch.
His family ate Irish and he wanted to see if he could get it broadcast on BBC - he did, young producers are clueless.

You should check out his mock chat show, Knowing Me Knowing You. I’d recommend watching that before this, just as a more accessible introduction to the character
To really enjoy this series, you need to have seen all the previous partridge content. It will make it so much better
I dunno i would say this is the true beginning of Alan,, whereas his chatshow host and previous sports presenting anchor on ,, The Day Today,, merely introduces a persona that's often very familiar to many within the sides of our television sets or hi-fi radiogram
I might even go farther and say its almost indecipherable to know ,, which came first, Alan, or Clarkson

@@jonboy8951 im not really sure i can agree w you there, it certainly is made by / for those that like to stamp on certain past people be them Terry Wogan or Terry Scott, Clarkson or caravaners and also rightly lampoons the cringe of the British main character's living defeat,, but i would say it has also been done a million times before as pathos has dwelt in comedy long before Fawlty, Spencer, Clouseau, Pitkin, Hancock, the clitheroe kid, lucy ricardo, Abbot and Costello, chaplin , keaton, yorick , falstaff and bottom
My personal favourites were The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin, Ever Decreasing Circles, Dear John, and,, Shelley,, along with Yes, Minister,, Brittas Empire,, Steptoe and Son,, Desmond's,, dinnerladies,, and Bottom
But i see where you're coming from and its probably the person who slipped getting off the first boat that sailed due to the inordinate bodies of inshore and offshore seas and rivers vis a vis post temporal arctic thawing of iceage polar icecaps that now make up the isle's british coastal perimeters and pleasant views,,that i think you'll find are good for skipping stones or skippering global schooners ⛵🤥🧀 smell my cheese

When it comes to awful tv shows with mediocre celebrities, Alan was ahead of his time.
If you watch "knowing me, knowing you with Alan Partridge" you'll see his first chat show series and you'll then see the reason he doesn't get a second one. Also, before his TV chat show, there was a radio version of the same title where he hopes it'll be successful enough to be moved from radio to television.
Also, Steve Coogan created this character and gave him a whole history and future as if Alan's a real person. If you watch the stuff that comes after the two series of I'm Alan Partridge you'll see what I mean. He now has a podcast called "From The Oasthouse" and 3 books which have also been released as audio books read by Alan. They're called "I partridge, we need to talk about Alan", "Nomad" and "Big Beacon" and they're brilliant.
I remember my brothers mate introducing me to Alan Partridge. He put this episode on and we ended up watching season 1 and 2.
The accent was very strong.
There was once a glossy magazine thats last page was always a quick fire celebrity q & a,, the month after Alan Partridge,, due to the amount of american complaints in the letters page against his dinosaur pov,, they had to put in a large disclaimer explaining to everyone that Alan was actually the comedic creation of stand up light entertainment comedian ,, Steve Coogan and although he might have been based on the likes of Sir Terry Wogan ,, Jimmy Tarbuck ,, Frank Bough and all ,, he was in fact fictional and didn't, entirely, exist ✨🙄🤔🤣

alan was otiginally a sports commentator/reporter,, got his big break as a chat show host and it failed so he is forced to get a slot on norwich local radio to survive,,,,

The genius of this episode (and remember this first aired in 1997) is that during the meeting with Tony Hayers when Alan is desperately pitching his ideas for a TV show, he basically just invents Reality TV
This is why people need to watch Knowing Me, Knowing You first so you really understand his situation

If you get into alan partridge which, given that you seemed to enjoy the first,seems likely then there is a whole universe to enjoy. You can see the first series of the cancelled chat show, there is a movie, another series called "mid morning matters" and another called "this time with alan partridge". There are clips of him at the beginning of his career on a show called "the day today" as a sports presenter. Also there are 3 books that are genuinely incredible if you have seen the tv stuff and 3 series of a podcast called "from the oasthouse with alan partridge" that are very funny. Finally (i think) there is a mock documentary called "scissored isle" that is really good too. If you were to chaeck any out, they do have a chronological order which is fairly important as much of the later stuff, especially the books are very self refrencing as they have many stories in them that are his point of view on things the viewer has seen and he sees things very differently.

Yes. Although the very first TV appearances, on Day Today aren't the start of Partridge material. The start - and his very funniest interviews, imho- were from the "Knowing me, knowing you" radio series.
Maybe not best for here, but, that's the start and a shame if you miss those out.

As an avid watcher of all English-speaking series I think I can say that the american ones use centuries-old plot lines.. It's always the same, just with different times, places and characters.. often riddled with what all of those dinosaurs in Hollywood think is the "contemporary, normal social behaviour", while most british series are made by an already established comedian who more often then not already wrote the entire script or story to completion, wants to tell a story and when it's over, it's over. Another reason why british series are so relatively short. 😂
On the american side on the other hand we have series written by a team of writers as the show goes along, in order to squeeze even the last bit of money out of it until nobody watches it anymore and they just cut it off.. 😂

It's a shame you didn't watch the original Alan Partridge show first. It gives you a bit of insight into his character and where he came from etc. Makes it a bit easier to understand the oddity of the character and where he's at now.

I usually can not watch programs that make me cringe with embarrassment for the person. But somehow Alan manages to take it to the extreme where it is really funny.
And, don't worry about Geordie Micheal. He's putting on that strong accent so you're only supposed to understand 50% of it..
