    I just did mine on the land cruiser prado (Aussie model), I just disconnected from where the hoses go into the firewall and joined both with a 3/4 inch brass connector and used the original hose clamps.

    If I had only known where to find those fittings here in Barbados, I would go with them too, but I had to make a u-fitting with copper pipe and elbows or 45degree elbows.I need to replace the vacuum valve and I had the hoses connected to heater core direct with out the valve, but it causes the engine to warm up a lot slower so I by-passed the core again and I started getting leaks so I just bought complete new hoses because the van is a 2001 so it needs new hoses.I hope my problem and yours are solved!!!

    This bypass is exactly what I need to do. Thanks for posting it. I have a 98 GC that the Heater Core has failed and leaked coolant into the rear passenger floor board via the heater outlet there. I live in N Fl so not having heat will only be a minor inconvenience during the mild winters that we typically have. And because my commute to work is only a mile. Thanks for the tip.

    Couple things, Why didnt you put the hose clamps over the hose before putting it together so you didnt have to unscrew the hose clamp all the way to put it on?
    Also, the heater core (just like the rest of the cooling system) is designed to withstand a max of 16psi, so if you are going to use an air compressor to flush out your heater core do not exceed 16psi or you risk blowing the seams of the heater core out. 8 to 10psi is more than enough to flush out a heater core

      How true you are. His is bad already so blowing the left over anti freeze out won’t hurt.
      But if you are cleaning a good one you need to be careful ov how many lbs of pressure you put in it.

    Great video, it's exactly what I needed to see. I've just pulled the HVAC box out of my 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.0L to fix the air doors, and I discovered that the heater core is just starting to leak. I live in a hot country, so I don't actually need it. It's now in the trash, and you've given me the information I need to run the bypass. Thanks guys!

    My 29 year old 1993 heater core just went a few hrs ago. Engine overheated for 4 minutes while stuck at two lights. Turned engine off sitting at each. Antifreeze fog was gushing out of the top defog dash vents. Pulled over. Engine cooled down. Antifeeze dripping on the pavement below the fan/core unit luckily in front of the dash on the engine side of the firewall, not inside the dash. Googled symptoms, then realized it was the heater core. Suspected it was because smoke was in the cab & not the engine compartment. Never replaced one before. Know nothing about them. Called a mechanic and he told me I could bypass it with a U shaped hose. I'm in L.A. County by the beach, so I don't need a heater until December, at the earliest. If ever, as it doesn't get below 38°F here anymore. I'm so, so thankful there's DIY CZcams videos on replacing the core on my make & model year. And which screws, bolts, hoses, and housings to move out of the way. Plus DIY heater core bypass videos like this one here, online. Need to bypass it because I can't afford a new core right now I didn't expect different sized hoses. More complicated than I thought, but still, simple and brilliant. O'Reilly, AutoZone, & NAPA are within a 2 mile walk of me. I even pulled over in the shade and have until next Monday to move for the street sweeper. I'm doing Vanlife traveling/living in this van, and loving it. Nothing ever breaks on this 1993 Dodge Ram B250. I love fixing automotive stuff, so finally, I have some work to do on the most reliable vehicle I've ever owned - a Dodge. (Tranny was rebuilt in 2016, still pristine). 194,000 on it. Barely any rust - a Tustin, CA van. All new mounts on it, now. Runs so smooth. Need to fill gallon jugs of water, to refill radiator & start my cooled down engine to keep my phone charged. Amost have top of core housing unit off. Might be impossible to get back left screw off of it. May need to remove the whole housing anyway (may have never been removed, and cleaned up before). Cleaned the leaf litter out of the front already. Stuff has dropped back behind it over the years and needs retrieval.
    Thanks a ton for this video! This is my first bypass job.

    Man, thank you for this video! I just changed my thermostat and coolant, and my car overheated on the road. I have since learned that the coolant system needs to be flushed, but I'm still unsure that my car won't overheat again. I believe bypassing the heater core should allow the coolant to operate at a cooler temperature(correct me if i'm wrong please). Your solution is simple and elegant. Being from Florida it's very rare we get so cold I need anything heater related. I'll just buy 2 spare hoses in case I need to resell the car or get rid of it. Thank you for this.

I hooked the hoses back up and I guess I’d better disconnect them again and use a u hose until I find out why they by passed it it the first place.

    Also as I read below it IS illegal to disconnect the heater core. All cars are registered in the state of CA must have an operating defroster to keep the windshield fog free in the winter. How will the cops know? It's real easy to tell because someone is constantly wiping the windshield so they can see out. Obviously it's easy to get away with it during warmer weather. Plus many people don't know this fact: in other states they have safety inspections your car must pass before it can be registered. We don't have that here in CA so, the CHP has the authority to pull ANY CAR OVER AT ANY TIME TO DO A SAFETY INSPECTION. But they are generally too busy to do this.

    Good temporary fix. I watch a video on replacing the heater core in my truck and what I think I would do is run the water hoses under the truck into the back seat and build a box with a heater core and fan in it. Could be done in an afternoon. Let alone tearing the dashboard out just to get to the core.
    I’ve replaced them in some older trucks and it was pretty easy. Let alone the new models of today. 😩

    Freakin' heater cores! They should design them to just slip in thru the fire wall. Two bolts!! Instead they make you tear the entire dash apart!!

    do you not recommend using rubber cement on the couplings?

    Great video, thanks for making it. I might do this on my YJ. Question though, will bypassing the heater core make the engine temperature run hotter (as shown on the temp gauge)? I ask since you have the hot coolant running out of the t-stat and straight back into the water pump inlet.

    can this be a permanent fix for a leaking heater core? i don't use the heater anyway!

    • @pixelbat
      @pixelbat Před 9 lety +1

      +Kd Mo Yes. About 10 years ago I had to do this on my Taurus. I never used my heater and didn't want to bother with tearing apart the dash to replace the heater core. Stayed that way for a good 5 years before I got rid of the car. Just make sure your hose clamps are nice and secure, and check it from time to time.

    Thanks for posting tip. Is it possible to leave the broken heater core in the jeep and mount a new one; somewhere more accessible? Or, would it still be a pain in the ass to tap into the wires and hoses? I have an 02 JGC 4.7L.

    Should I fill my heater core if I do this because my blender doors is stuck on heat? I have already done this and have ice cold AC again. However, heater core is clean and perfectly fine just capped off and not using it. Should I fill it will coolant and cap it off?

    i smell coolant in my dash and have it behind of the carpet but the heater core seems to also leak outside the car somewhere and is dripping down and burning on my muffler. can something else cause this on the inside of my car?

    will bypassing the heater core make the air blowing to the cabin from the ac colder?

    • @snoopdogie187
      @snoopdogie187 Před 8 lety

      Usually not. I can't speak for ever situation, but for the ones I've seen, the air runs through the a/c evaporator (coils inside the car), then it can either go through the heater core, or bypass the heater core and go out the vents. This is accomplished by using a blender door, which adjusts how much air can go into the heater core, and how much air bypasses the heater core.
      I'm sure some heat gets from the heater core into the cabin just because the heater core is hot, but not enough that its worth the effort to bypass the heater core. Also, some cars do have a valve to turn the heater core off when not in use, but I don't think any more modern cars use those.

  • @michaelmckinnon431
    @michaelmckinnon431 Před 7 lety

    So you didn't need to bleed the system after the bypass?

  • @rpn000rpnca
    @rpn000rpnca Před 5 lety

    Is it possible to add a shutoff to the heater hose? Heat seems to bleed through even with mix door closed.
    I drive a 2003 Toyota Corolla. Does the engine need the flow from the heater core?

    • @bleepinjeep
      @bleepinjeep  Před 5 lety

      Yes, many cars of the past had a heater control valve to do exactly that. They were vacuum or cable actuated. You can get a junkyard one or an aftermarket one.

    • @JoseGonzalez_Maestria

    BleepinJeep. Thanks for this video. This is exactly what we have to have done to our car. But the damn machanic we took it to was going to charge us $1200 , that's rediculous. We have right now a black water pip thing that looks similar to the little black water adapter. Do u think that will be fine or not. Please let me know
