Hi everyone, thank you for all the support over these 2 videos!
This probably brings an end to the mermaid era on my channel, I might make a video on Mako Mermaids down the line but I still haven't seen it so that's kind of far away.
I'm not entirely sure where to go next, so feel free to recommend me any shows/movies/games etc that you'd like to see me cover 😁
(Preferably non-Australian teen dramas, since I don't want my entire channel to be that lol)

by the power of Wikipedia to search out different countries tv show lists (teen dramas mainly), New Zealand is surprisingly small, only seen Mirror Mirror, Being Eve, haven't seen Children of Fire Mountain, Children of The Dog Star, Killian Curse, some of Amazing Extraordinary Friends (i didn't know it has 3 seasons and web chronicles with one of the main characters) or Maddigan's Quest and shit the Tribe is extremely popular yet didn't see much of it and that is a long one, i think some are of decent amount and they are the ones that are huge and as for movies, because damn there's a lot of them. i have check what other countries tv shows before video games is also my thing.

But the thing about australian kid dramas is that they’re so fkn underrated and nobody is talking about them!! I might be biased because I grew up watching a ton of aussie and uk kids’ shows (sweden’s kids channel rents them because it’s way cheaper than anything american). But there’s a ton of gems that come from australia that nobody knows about, and it’s really sad. H2O was lucky enough to be bought by Nickelodeon and broadcasted in america but the rest are left forgotten :(

Yeah, I feel like they took Emma’s leader attitude and split it between Cleo and Rikki since there would be no one to direct or come up with plans anymore. Without Emma they were stuck with a rebel and a ditz, they needed that kind of leader roll to balance them out hence why Bella became the new Cleo and rest had to change their personalities. Idk if that makes sense.

One of the things I never understood about the girls revealing their secrets to their boyfriends is: why? Boyfriends come and go, but family is there. For instance, Emma was very close with her family, so they would've understood. Cleo's dad would most like have understood (NOT Kim, though), Rikki's dad, I think, wouldn't have cared, and Bella was like 9 when this happened. How could Bella have kept it a secret for so long?? I don't think I would've come up with valid excuses when I was 9.

      @laikapupkino1767 Před 2 lety +41

I too was very frustrated that the girls didn't trust their parents enough to tell them while trusting boyfriends they'd known a few months with such a huge secret I could see the wisdom of keeping Kim out of the loop (she would be set for life blackmailing them all) but not their parents. The worst that might have happened would be one or more set of parent dragging their were-mermaid offspring to a doctor in hopes of "curing" her; And if the doctor was as unscrupulous as Evil Marine Biologist Lady their being publicly outed could wreck any chance for ever having a normal life (though if handled right fame could lead to being a very rich mermaid!). I think the main reason they never told even their parents was just that the writers relied heavily on their secret being in jeopardy to add suspense + humor to a lot of episodes.
Another thing they seemed unnecessarily worried about was being captured and experimented on or even dissected. The girls might have been able to turn into mermaids but they were also human, Australian citizens (unless Bella was just there on a visa...) with birth certificates and all, and I couldn't see the cops or Federal Police just saying "Tough luck, she's a mermaids and has no human rights" if a teenage girl disappeared. If it was my daughter instead of a doctor I would hire the best lawyer I could find to make damn sure her human status was recognized and rights were protected,,. right after I had her take me to the Moon Pool during a full moon so I could be a mermaid too. It's been a lifelong fantasy and irrational obsession of mine (see picture...)

It would have been much more realistic as well. There's no way that these three people who are so tightly bound by a huge secret would be so easily separated. The loneliness that would result in, I would think, would cause any one of the three by herself to reach out to the others often. (Although, I imagine that Emma told her family, because what else could she do?) Specifically with Emma, I think Cleo at least would have a strong desire to keep in touch, just because Cleo had been the timid one following leader Emma around. Charlotte did not break up cleo and Lewis, cleo broke up with Lewis because he was trying to fix things all the time when she needed a little space to deal with things. Cleo kinda started the whole thing with Charlotte by not being nice at first and looking through her diary. Cleo had every opportunity to say to Lewis she was wrong and wanted him back but she doesn’t so he moves on with Charlotte because she’s showing him attention. The girls are so standoffish to Charlotte before she got with Lewis all she wanted was friends. And she ignores his feelings and everything hes saying and forces herself on him. • @Lee-ic8tq
    @Lee-ic8tq Před 3 lety +57

Never thought that I'd do this, but here we go.
Charlotte's character was very well written, and doesn't deserve the amount if hat that she gets.
When we first meet Charlotte she is very nice and has a crush on Lewis. She doesn't try to break up Lewis and Cleo but also isn't afraid to befriend him. We don't really see her as much until Cleo and Lewis break up.
Now I will explain a bit about Lewis. Lewis was Cleos friend. In season 1 the girls did not want to tell Lewis anything, they didnt want him to know that they were mermaids, they didn't want his help, and they didnt want him involved (and I'm referring to mostly Rikki and Emma, but Cleo did contribute to that). Now in season 2 he is more casted as Cleos love interest. He is still involved with helping them but more or less they think that they dont need him. He was kinda casted aside by the girls and they didnt really treat him fair and sometimes bullied him.
This is where Charlotte comes in. Lewis had just broken up with Cleo and the girls took her side. Lewis has no one. Except Charlotte who had already been trying to befriend him. Charlotte treats him nice and doesn't make fun of him for liking nerdy stuff. But Lewis treats her like she's always number 2. She puts up with that because she doesn't have any other friends, and also because she likes him.
As the season goes on we see Charlotte becoming a bit possessive. She wants to spend more time with Lewis, but Lewis always moves her aside for the girls. The girls also want nothing to do with Charlotte, and Lewis can't invite her to hang with their mermaids. But she doesn't know that so she just sees it as them casting her aside.
Now when she starts dating Lewis he's still prioritizing the girls over her. He's spending more time with other girls then his own girlfriend. This is where her jealousy comes from. She likes Lewis and he likes her back but he loves Cleo and spends more time with her and makes Cleo number 1. This isn't what pushes her over the edge though.
When Charlotte becomes a mermaid she is proud and happy. She feels more connected to her grandmother. And she can finally be friends with the girls and they won't cast her aside anymore. But they do.
They don't like Charlotte, they don't want to be friends with her. They do decide to help her but only because they think that she can't handle being a mermaid, and that she needs help. They don't want to be friends with her.
Now Charlotte has a temper. But only when it comes to her loved ones. She is extremely protective and is very loyal. She knows that the girls treat Lewis bad, she doesn't like how they cast him aside when he clearly puts them first. She becomes obsessive, and jealous at the same time because even though she is everything that cleo is she is still not number 1 for Lewis.
So now we're at the end she steals cleos necklace, she does bad things and becomes who we as fans hate. She steals the necklace because of her jealousy. She wasn't enough for Lewis with being better then cleo so she tries to in some way become her.
But when cleo tries to become friends with Lewis again and trues to spend more time with him. But Charlotte has always been pushed aside for cleo, and Lewis will always love cleo so he would jump back at the opportunity to get back with cleo in a heartbeat. And once again Charlotte would be number 2.
She has so much bottled up jealousy and rage. She wants Lewis to be hers and wants them out of his life because as long as they're there then she will always be second. So she tries to get rid of them. It's the only way to get what she wants. They don't stay away from Lewis so she tries to cut off what she thinks is the only thing that makes Lewis want to stay with them. She has already become cleo so that's not holding him back but the mermaid thing is.
There isn't really a reason why she suddenly decided to become good. The only reason I could think of is that she finally let go of her anger and jealousy and that she realized that she lost herself.
I also think that some of it had to do with her dad. This is more of a stretch but it could be possible that her dad left her and her mom for another woman or family. This could be why she got so jealous and so mad and possessive of Lewis. Because she was left behind by her dad and with lewis. And she was second choice instead of first.

Cleo was mad at her taking an interest in lewis after cleo was the one who decided to stay friends it was unbelievable to me. Cleo could have saved a lot of heartbreak by telling lewis that she wants to continue things once she has her life under control then lewis wluld have never led charlotte on because if theres a chance with cleo he wont miss it. Also i understand lewis was annoying for ignoring charlotte's red flags but some of the time they were full on bullying him those parts hurt

Brittany Byrnes recently did an interview and yes she got so much abuse online from people who hated Charlotte (although the things she was attacked for weren't the villainy things but stuff like kissing Lewis or micromanaging the birthday party). She got attacked over her weight as well.
As someone who's experienced people like Charlotte, I can understand what you call the 180 in the finale a little. Her personality is very manipulative and controlling. Abusive people like that are capable of being nice when they can see how it will benefit them. Charlotte wasn't sorry in that last scene. She was trying to get Lewis to feel sympathy for her and claim she had changed, in the hopes of him letting her into his life again. If she were truly sorry, she would have been grovelling and given the locket back at once and had more accountability (she minimises everything as "not being mermaid enough", glossing over the fact that she could have nearly killed the other girls). She's trying to see how much she can get away with and when Lewis is having none of it, that's why we never see her again. Her abuse tactics didn't work and she knew she couldn't play him anymore.

I agree 100% with the people saying season 3 was a mess !
    A MESS !
It's like... so many different ideas, no chemistry between them, Rikki and Cleo's personalities changed sooooo much (unrealistically), 2 unnecessary characters added to the plot: the evil redhead and this Will guy, who is a reallllllly bad actor and a really bad character, in my opinion.
It is not even because of Lewis or Emma's disappearances, that the quality hit bottom.
Simply too many ideas, but not enough care for any particular one.
It's like they wanted to make it work faster and finish it faster
    .
Previous 2 seasons had more character development, better character chemistry, better writing chemistry, better logic.
I think Season 2 had the best balance, but Season 1 was also more than decent, despite the occasional bad acting.
Season 3 simply had horrible writing, sorry, and it looked like a totally different show.

So Bella gets a lot of un deserved hate and I'm going to say that she was a really good character.
Most people see her as a replacement to Emma. They both have blonde hair, they have similar powers, and are both mermaids. And you pointed out that she was just a new cleo. But she was so much more than that.
Emma was strict and a rule follower, a perfectionist and a someone who is always right. Cleo was bubbly and empathetic, she was very loyal and was always there for her friends.
Bella is completely different, she puts her heart out there and isn't afraid to show emotions, she is bold and knows what she wants. She is more similar to rikki but rikki is more of a hothead and isn't afraid to bite back.
Bella was very refreshing and good female representation (not her relationship with will though). She had nearly no flaws. She didn't treat Nate like the rest of the characters did, even after he tried to make a move on her. She still treats him the same. And she doesn't to too bad about people. She follows her heart and is very noble. She was there for her friends but knew when to take care of herself. She had self respect and called out wills weird behavior when he found out that she was a mermaid. She wanted to sacrifice herself for the world and didn't want her friends to get hurt.
    She wasn't loud or girly.
Rikki was a tomboy and kinda mean. Emma was a straight a student and sorta nerdy. Cleo was basically the dumb one but very friendly. But Emma wasn't a stereotype and didn't try to be. She was just Emma, and she was happy with it.

@@Mausefell a character doesn't need to have flaws to be a good role model. She represented a lot of healthy characteristics and therefore showed a good representation of how to handle situations. No character is ever perfect as perfect is not a standard that can be applied to everyone and mean the same. An example is "H2O was the perfect mermaid themed show" everyone can agree and disagree on if what I stated is true, but in the end being perfect is just being better then others compared in a specific category.
I think Bella did have flaws, she tried to see the best in people which causes her to be sometimes naive or blind towards other character actions or reasons behind those actions.
I did not like her either but I am able to see that she is a good role model for young kids who look up to her, and like Charlotte for example, I didn't like her but she was a good character as well, (I don't mean in a good person way but more of written way).

I have no empathy for Bella cus I barely know her.
Bella for me is a S1 character trowed into the S3
Bella behavior is expected if it was a S1 character , and the biggest problem with her character is tht they didn't and couldn't develop her in a way tht she could be fit into the current world
She is dumb and looks like Cleo in S1
Her story arc is awful. She is so naive in when dealing with Sophie. It's supposed to be a 3 main character show but it looks like Cleo and Rikki have their own relationship tht was built along the all series and tht Bella relationship with both Cleo and Rikki is so forced. Emma Rikki and Cleo friendship works cus they already knew each other and it took 2 seasons to be built, and then the creators to be make us swallow Bella

There are some seriously beautiful underwater scenes in all seasons but in season 3 we have some where they dive much deeper into the oceans. I think season 2 was my favourite one, main reason being the acting honestly. However It was definitely difficult to watch because of Charlotte and it was definitely more centered around relationships rather then the mermaid parts who were more of a side thing.

    1. (9:56) Fun fact: The theme song is actually sung by a different artist each season. I didn't notice that myself either because seasons 1 and 2 sound so similar.
    2. One detail I missed in season 3 that you didn't mention was the color scheme. In seasons 1 and 2, Emma wore a lot of blue and white, Cleo wore a lot of pink and purple, and Rikki wore a lot of red and black. It's not a huge deal, but I wish they'd continued it.

Yeah also change/replace main characters a lot, another JMSP trope since Ocean Girl, of leaving some of it's main or support cast, Mako Mermaids is no exception. So, I gotta speak on the zane thing. My shipping heart is crushed by season 3 Rane/Zikki, but adult me appreciates the realism. Zane is an absolute dickhole in season 1. Hes consistently selfish, he's consistently rude except with Ricky, he strands cleo on a boat knowing she cant swim for no reason, he tries to sabotage the girls multiple times for no reason other than to be a cruel bully, AND cherry on top, he gives ms chatum, an old woman, MULTIPLE heart attacks, get her evicted, and sinks her house boat. And he never really apologizes or makes up for that. Hes sweet with Ricky, he tries to protect the girls, but even in season 2 where hes at his best,he does weird shady stuff. Like the amber gris or in the episode with the Ricky v emma/zane v ash, he completely mischaracterizes the events when he tells them to Ricky. Yes, he was trying to protect emma, but he left out the part where he was a total ass to do it. He doesnt fully explain the situation and instead exacerbates the situation to make himself look better to Ricky, causing a rift in Ricky and Emma's relationship. And he doesnt do anything to fix it. It's a hint that he's not made this miraculous 180. Ricky's love didnt "fix" him.
And season 3 just continues that trend and it's very realistic. Zane's the bad boy that girls wish they could fix with their love but in real life, a girl loving them doesnt fix them. Everything he does in season 3 is actually consistent with his character. Hes selfish and doesnt care about bending the rules to get what he wants. It sucks but that's how it usually goes in real life.

100%! Zane is the perfect representation of a male narcissist. He shows that in season one while stranding Cleo out on his little boat knowing she can’t swim then throwing her into a pool an episode later, attacking Mrs Chatum like that etc.
Season 2 his peak was still disappointing. He causes trouble then manipulates the situation with Emma rikki and ash . He pretends to fall off a motorbike and be injured at the start to win back rikki such an immature move etc.
Then season 3 he completely shows his true colors. Dismisses the whole mermaid situation as silly mermaids business, doesn’t give any sort of help to rikki with any of it just makes it worse and then cheats on her.

Season 2 was the best, Charlotte was a perfect villain and I can understand her, I mean the girls and her boyfriend wanted to took off her powers, so she was preparing for war.

I kinda hate Weilan. She’s so annoying and thinks she’s better than everyone else. But honestly I hate most characters in Mako mermaids lol. The only characters I like consistently are Mimi, Evie, and Zach, though Zach is annoying when he’s against the mermaids in the first season. I also like Serena for the most part but she’s just a bit too childish like I’d prefer it if she acted a little more grown up, especially when it comes to David. She acts like a five year old whenever he’s around and he does the same. I get that it’s a show for kids but it’s just such a step down from H2O, that managed to have natural feeling relationships while still being kid friendly.

The only characters I really like are Mimi, Zach and Evie. Sirena, Ondina and Rita are fine and the rest lowkey suck.

It’s fun to see the story unfold but I don’t really care what happens if I’m honest. Like I said I like a few of the characters but I never liked any of the relationships, the one I felt the most for was Eric and Ondina and he’s like a bad guy and shit. And it doesn’t even seem like any of the characters are friends, we’re supposed to think they are because they hang out together but none of them have any scenes to prove it. As a young child I obviously hated Charlotte, but seeing her again with a more mature eye you can kinda get her fall into "evil" (not really that evil either). From the beginning she wanted to fit in, maybe she was a bit nosy with the main trio but they (mainly Cleo) didn't exactly made her feel welcome. Charlotte also asked Cleo multiple times if she was ok with her making advances on her ex, while also clarifying that if she's not comfortable she would stop it, but every time she said yes and then get mad at Charlotte for doing the thing she allowed her to do. Charlotte was also dumped multiple times by her boyfriend for him to go and hang out with her ex (also he wasn't really caring, almost like he felt forced to be with her). Even when Charlotte found out about he mermaid thing and became one, that didn't turn her into a villain, she wanted to connect more with the girls now that they were all magical (and they still shunned her because she was more powerful) by the time they wanted to kinda help her with the full moon thing, it was already too late as she was tired of being pushed around and was already "evil" (and let's be honest, while she was in most of season 2, she was a true antagonist for like 4 episodes)

I'm not sure if many people in NY love this show but i love it as a New yorker. I love how the actors did their best to portray their characters but i was a bit sad when lewis left the show and they made him go overseas to study. But I remember sam telling cleo that it may be hard now but later on the love can grow stronger. I love sam, she's a great stepmom. Season 3 did go downhill but i dont hate the characters. Bella i do like her but i felt like they could've give a better power than just making water to jello like substance. Lewis is an awesome character. Will.. i didnt really like his character tht much and for Charlotte in season 2, i first hated her but then again it wasnt her fault... she really could've been friends with all of them but cleo's jealousy.. the water being sprayed at her from the sprinkler... and lewis going to the cleo, rikki and emma to help them out even when he was dating her. But ngl i do love cleo and lewis together though. In a way i can see that is both sides made mistakes. I guess the writer didnt know how to make it better with emma (claire) leaving the show bc of her other show... 🤔 i felt like they could've made it more better.

So thanks to Jonathan M. Shiff without him I think people wouldn't know actors like Phoebe Tonkin, Margot Robbie or Liam Hemsworth and also covid 19, one of the only good things happened was the whole search and watch was a mix of Australian kids & teen shows, JMSP shows included, Mako Island of Secrets while good as well despite some weird EPs mixed with the main plot, H20 imo is better. Tbf tho Ash (Craig Horner) had Cybergirl, a show probably mentioned a lot lately because it was my JMSP show ever aside from Ocean Girl seeing a bit also very dif from H20, but it was Jonathan's first produced and created out of 19 his team (only 7 were created and produced by him, one developed, 3 concept, 2 documentaries, a tv film and the rest he was producer/executive producer) he was his 1st role and also the actress who played Louise Chatham in H20 plays the mayor Buxton, mayor of River City, a fictional town in Queensland, Brisbane (which later Bureau of Magical Things is set there, 17 years later)
Speaking of TBOMT, S2 is really good In the 12 EPs so far aired (go watch it Imo probably the best of 2010 JMSP shows and I do have seen most of the shows aside from 4 left that atm hard to find EPs in English or complete. I know the Teenventure Series YT has some of them & Sam Fox Adventures, I know that the H20 & Dance Academy has the full series, all of which blocked in Australia, I know So Fetch has some Australian tv shows that sadly on private with some exceptions and also I do have a lot of saved and created playlists on a lot of Australian kids & teen shows so go checked them out if you're curious or grew up with these one way or another. Yeah another JMSP shows love returnee actors from previous shows to appear and actors that would later appeared in future maybe as a main, support or recurring characters, TBOMT is basically that only way up with references from previous shows (mainly from the created and produced by Jonathan himself).
