The Lost Walther Generation: Pistol Variants During Changing Times (1974-2004)

  • This topic I thought would be fun to explore, so lets look at Walther handguns from 1974 through 2004. During this generation, the company had to rediscover its market and reinvent how it conducted business.
    We begin with the P.1 & P.4, holdovers from the WWII P.38 design really.
    Then we get into the P5 & P5C, which while they look more modern, actually still rely on the same previous technology.
    With the P88 & P88C Walther did try something new, and honestly experienced failure in doing so.
    And finally with help from Glock GMBH talent, Walther entered the 21st century with the first generation of the P99 & P99C.

    I think the p99AS is probably one of the most understood and underrated pistols yet outstanding in every way. Great carry piece!

    I was shocked at how comfortable the P99 was to hold the first time I handled one. Still one of the best grips out there, in my opinion.

    I have an interarms ppk/s .380. I can shoot it with suprising accuracy. Daily carry is pps with trigger guard mag release. It is also a favorite. Have search for p99c but never found one in 9mm. The chase is fun but at times tedious. Really enjoy your videos. All content less emphasis on politics, much appreciated.

    I have a P99c AS in .40 that I don't really like to shoot. I like .40 in all size Glocks. I think the P99 has a higher bore axis and doesn't use a heavier spring for .40. Maybe I need to convert to 9mm and/or suppress it. I was also thinking, before it was mentioned, how interesting it is that the US military switched from the Browning system (1911) to Walther system (92FS) around the same time Walther switched from their system (P38) to the Browning system (P88).

    • @misha5670
      @misha5670 Před 3 lety

      When we had these LE trade in ones come in, a couple did have issues. 2-3 had cracked grip panels, and 2 had the chipped frame issue below the mag catch. Of course we had no way of knowing their history: round count, service, use/abuse. Mine was one of my earliest 'whale' guns actually.

    Misha, this isnt related to this video but do you know why Bulgaria prefers to make milled guns over stamped even though the Russians replaced milled in the 60's? I was looking for a place to message but couldnt find where to send it. lol

    • @misha5670
      @misha5670 Před 3 lety +1

      I'm sure they do feel it allows them to offer a better product (from their POV at least), but honestly? Its a bit of a marketing strategy. Everyone else was offering stamped AKs, so if Arsenal AD offered them on milled receivers, it would set them apart a bit more. Also, Arsenal was looking to get into 5.56 NATO AKs back in the '90s. Can you make a stamped AK work in that caliber that will be durable for the long haul? Sure, but IMI determined for its Galil 2 decades earlier that a milled receiver was a god answer to dealing with the higher pressures and stresses of 5.56x45 over 7.62x39.
