    Time For Chaos is a playthrough of Masks of Nyarlathotep for the 7E Call of Cthulhu role-playing game system by Chaosium.
    A mysterious lost expedition sets in motion an epic globe spanning adventure as investigators come face to face with ancient evils beyond the scope of human comprehension. Often considered the greatest role-playing game campaign ever written, Masks of Nyarlathotep stretches the boundaries of horror, driving both characters and players insane since its publication in 1984.

    Whoever told you that the DEX bonus to initiative for having a readied firearm only lasts for the first round of combat is ABSOLUTELY incorrect. There is a gameplay example on page 115 of the rulebook that clearly shows you are able to make use of the bonus for every combat round that your gun is drawn and readied.
    If you use the optional Movement During Combat rule (pg 127) however, you will lose the bonus if you move before shooting.

Vaughn, the hardened soldier, is the first to run and almost loses his mind. Fairuz, the bad-ass persian lady, offloads her pistol into the nearest monster and then runs away. Margo, the German with the frown lines, initially fights but, after Carter engages the monster, runs away and joins the others!

    I can never remember whether cilantro is parsley or coriander.. I don't think I like either, but parsley is extra ick. Also kale is petrified carpet underlay. Eating upside down does make sense for pizza though, since it puts the good stuff in contact with your tongue.
    I believe the dex order rules state that anyone with a firearm drawn and leveled at a target gets +50 to their usual dex for initiative purposes at the start of every combat round, not only the first. They have to fire immediately on their turn though, or they lose that bonus. It's a way to make it worthwhile to spend an entire turn drawing a gun, where you could otherwise throw something to do actual damage, & to ensure that you can't charge someone with a drawn gun without risking being shot before you can swing.
    However, it's much simpler to pare things down to allowing anyone with a gun drawn & wanting to fire to act first in each round & then anyone without a drawn gun or not wanting to fire act second, in their respective dex order; basically split each round into two for fast stuff & then slow stuff.
    The CoC rules have a lot of details that I think are mostly best ignored or simplified for the majority of games (smoothing the less-needed stuff for pace & house-rulesing things that fit circumstantially). The nice thing is that all that detail does allow you to pick & choose to customise a game for the kind of experience you want players to have & how grim it should be for their characters, it just requires everyone to know what's going on & for those house rules to be consistent (or applied when it'd make sense, such as with spending luck).
    Aww, Carter. Some day it'll be you doing the abandoning.
    You can apply 2 penalty or bonus dice to a single roll, believe it or not. You probably shouldn't though.
    Poor victim didn't find that at all amulesing *twirls moustache*

    You seem to be playing Jackson as a lot more scholarly than I thought of him, but tbh it does work, especially as a foil to what seems to be a more martial/adventurous sort of cast, especially for Classic Cthulhu (two characters with guns, one with a rifle, plenty of combat skills). In my experience, Masks really does shine with the Pulp rules, since it was sort of a Pulp campaign before Pulp Cthulhu was a thing, but I've run it as Classic and we still had a blast.
    One pedantic thing about mechanics though. You don't seem to be doing Luck quite right - you can't use it for Sanity rolls, and you also don't regenerate it every session, but every chapter, at least in Classic Cthulhu. If this is just a Pulp addition, I'd recommend allowing some more uses for Luck taken from Pulp Cthulhu, such as avoiding certain death, especially with Masks being a bit of a meat grinder.
    I also understand what you meant, but referring to the indigenous regions of Peru as "uncivilized" came off a bit, uh, bad. Puno is one of the cultural centers of Peru, for one thing. As for Luis de Mendoza's name, "de Mendoza" would not be a very common name, and in fact would stick out a lot as being antiquated. Just "Mendoza" would be more common - it'd be like a modern-day Englishman having the last name "de Poitou." It marks him out as being from a pretty ancient lineage. Specifically, "de" in Spanish names means "of," and is almost always seen in aristocratic names in the modern day. Since Peru does not have formal orders of aristocracy, the surname "de Mendoza" would mark LdM as being a Spanish aristocrat, though perhaps a very minor one given his line of work - sort of like the "hidalgo" class made famous by Don Quixote. An aristocrat with nothing left but his surname.
    (ofc, we all know LdM is something much darker by this point, but I think that'd be the vibe someone well-versed with Spanish-speaking cultures, such as Jackson, would get. For Luis himself, he probably comes from an era before most people had surnames beyond something indicating who their father was. So someone named Hernando whose father was named Fernando would be called "Hernando Fernandez," while his son, Enrique, would be called "Enrique Hernandez." Mendoza means "cold mountain" in Basque, but there was also a noble family prominent at the time called the House of Mendoza, so either Luis was a commoner from a place called Mendoza, or he was a scion of the de Mendoza noble family)

    I hate how percentile dice are. Like is the 00 a 0, or a 100? a 100 doesn't make sense, because then you could roll a 109; so it must mean 0. But what about the d10s 0? is that a 0 or a 10? It it's a 0 then your range is only 0-99. So it that 0 must be a 10? If it's a 10, then it just gets messy. Like rolling a 20 and 10 means 30. (it's not hard to do the math but you have to add them together.)
    maybe you just make 00 0 into the 100? It's just messy.

    • @icarian553
      @icarian553 Před rokem +13

      There's nothing messy about it. If you roll 0s on both dices it's 100. You don't need tens dice with 10, 20, 30 etc. I never really use those, two normal D10s are just fine and how I've always rolled. One is tens and one is singles. You roll 6 and 5 and its 65. You roll 0 and 2 and it's 2. It's quite simple.

    • @michaelseanderry
      @michaelseanderry Před rokem +2

      @@icarian553 The 10s die keeps people honest. Even with different colors, it’s really easy for people to make genuine mistakes that benefit them about which is which. In your example, those rolls could be easily interpreted as 56 and 20.

    • @kenzied1831
      @kenzied1831 Před rokem +1

      It takes a little getting used to for sure. The shortcut is, add the 10s and the 1s die together, EXCEPT if you roll 00 and 0, then it's 100.
      Ex:
      00 + 5 is 5
      00 + 8 is 8
      00 + 0 is 100
      10 + 5 is 15
      10 + 8 is 18
      10 + 0 is 10
      60 + 1 is 61
      etc etc

    • @icarian553
      @icarian553 Před rokem +1

      There's some old really funny dice rules from 80s and 90s. Like if you played D100 system, but needed to roll D20 like in RQ or something. But what if you didn't have a D20? No problem, you could roll it with 2D10. If you rolled anything but 1 on your first die, you would just add the numbers. But if you rolled 1, it would then be tens and 0 would be 0 except if you rolled 0 on both, and then it would be 10.
      Example you roll:
      1 and 5 = 15
      4 and 6 = 4 + 6 = 10
      0 and 0 = 10 +10 = 20
      0 and 9 = 0 + 9 = 9
      This is from the rulebook of one old RPG from the day.

    • @dmeep
      @dmeep Před rokem +1

      Lets see if i can explain this properly as i have found it hard to explain to people in the past. First we look at the dice with the tens 20 30 etc this now sets the range and you add the second die to it 0-9 so what is normally a 10 is now a zero so 20 on one die and the 0 normally indicating a 10 is just a zero when you roll a d100 making the result 20 and not 30. if the die with the incirments of tens have the 00 you now add 1-9 as normal and it reads as 1 2 3 -9 but if you get 00 and 0 then that outcome is 100 as you cannot roll a 0 on a d100 the range is 1-100 not 0-99. the first die sets the range of the second die is important to remember.
      did this make thing clearer for you or just confused in a different way?
