  • Here is a small contest for you all! In this video a musical tune is made, but it's not by the train. Comment the following:
    1. The time mark
    2. The musical tune
    3. The source of the tune
First to correctly guess will have their comment pinned. Good luck!
Durango & Silverton #493 is a K-37 class Mikado built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works for the Denver & Rio Grande Western in 1902. The engine was originally built as a Class 190 #1105, later to C-41 #1005, Consolidation built for the standard gauge routes of the railroad. In 1928 the engine and its sisters were converted to narrow gauge engines and were reclassified, renumbered, and rebuilt with new parts. The engines were the largest narrow gauge engines on the Rio Grande and served the railroad well until 1968 when narrow gauge operations were discontinued. 493 was stored in the roundhouse of Alamosa, CO until 1981, when the D&SNGRR was formed and locomotives were taken to their new homes in Durango, one of these being 493. In the 1990s the engine was moved to Silverton for static display.
The engine spent the next 20 years parked in town until 2016, when the Durango & Silverton made an agreement with the Colorado Railroad Museum to move 493 to Durango where it would be sent by truck to Golden, CO for restoration. However the plans were cancelled and the engine sat at the Durango roundhouse for nearly 2 years. After the 416 fire of 2018, the railroad began to make some changes to their operations, including converting some, if not all, the engines into oil burners. A decision was made that year to restore 493 and convert it to an oil burning engine. The roundhouse crews spent the next 18 months working to restore the locomotive, including adding the necessary parts for the oil conversion. Their efforts paid off January 24, 2020, when 493 moved under its own power for the first time in over 50 years, and is also the first K class engine of the D&RGW to burn oil instead of coal. Over the next few weeks, test runs on the engine were sent out to test the oil firing and to make sure everything is working as it should. On February 14, the engines made its first revenue run pulling the Romance on the Rails Special to Cascade Canyon.
In this video we will see 493 pulling the 2020 Winter Photographer's Special on February 16. I was thrilled that I got the opportunity to ride the special, so enjoy the sights and sounds of 493 through some of the most beautiful scenery in the world.

I took a ride on the DSNGRR about 8 years ago, l loved it. For my birthday 7 years ago I was able, along with some friends, to ride the Heber creaper that had been reserved by the Utah Model Railroad Association for a photo shoot. MAN ,what a great time that was. Also been on the toltec and Cumbries, and have even traveled from Johannesburg to Capetown South Africa by rail. 24 hours in a Pullman, most of the way behind steam. When I was young, we lived very close to the Union Pacific switch yards in Bountiful Utah, and I spent many hours watching the steam engines, hence comes my love for steam. While in South Africa I was also given the opportunity to "drive" ( in South Africa engineers are called drivers) a steam engine and I have it on 8mm film to prove it! Thanks for your work, I really enjoy it!

That 6-chime whistle is music to my ears. Love watching steamers and old diesels. Shame the railway where i live is in limbo due to renovations all over the country..but these videos are entertaining and amazing! Great video man!
