  • The D&RGW K37 #493 makes its debut after being retired in 1968. 52 years ago. This Part 1 includes scenes from inside the roundhouse, when it whistles off and moves out of the roundhouse and moving around the loop in the yard. Part 2 includes a return to the turntable to turn around and again move around the loop in the yard with engine facing opposite direction to check clearances. Originally built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1902 as standard gauge and converted to narrow gauge in 1928 by the D&RGW Denver Burnham Shops. The locomotives was purchased and moved to the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad in 1981. It sat outside on display in Silverton for 20 years. The D&SNGRR's multi-year, multi-million dollar rebuild and conversion to burn oil was to reduce the risk of starting fires during extremely dry condition.

    I love this K37! This inspired me the idea for a new narrow gauge slip stream locomotive on the narrow gauge part of the new Mississippi Denver & Rio Grande Western railroad. It is a Model K37.

    It’s great having another K-37 running other than the 491 and even more amazing that 492 will be restored at the C&TS ironic how 491, 492 and 493 will all be restored to operation

    I used to visit 493 when I was in Silverton. She looked so sad sitting on the rust track. I would always wonder if she would ever run again. I guess wishes do come true. Thanks for capturing this even.

    • @Romans--bo7br
      @Romans--bo7br Před 4 lety

      KenBinCT.... Don't know for sure on the D&S NGRR, but "most" (ie: the UP, etc.) US Steam conversions from coal, are using No.5 heavy oil (aka - Bunker C) with a 10% cut with diesel fuel to keep from needing to pre-heat it for flow to the injectors in the firebox.

    • @royreynolds108
      @royreynolds108 Před 4 lety

      @@Romans--bo7br I did not know that Bunker C was still available. I was thinking heavy fuel oil or diesel because of ease and availability. They already have several diesels so why a third fuel to store.

    • @whitcraft4578
      @whitcraft4578  Před 4 lety

      Hi Dale, Thanks for watching and commenting on my video. The turntable is powered by compressed air from the shop compressor. The table was and can be powered by the locomotive. I don't know if they used steam or compressed air, I would think steam as the volume would be more than the engine compressor could keep up with.

    • @dalecherne5377
      @dalecherne5377 Před 4 lety
