  • In this video, I give you my take on when choosing between a V8 or V10 engine, and more specifically on my first-generation Audi R8. Are the two extra cylinders worth it? How much extra joy comes with 2 more cylinders? I give you my take and analysis having owned and driven many cars with both V8s and V10s from the street driving perspective and on the track!

    Ricky Elder @REPerformance UK wrote this down 2 years ago, still applies and is relevant to this video. (copied it all from one comment he made on Pistonheads). Ricky has worked on so many R8's he knows them inside out and if I had a R8 in the UK or Europe I wouldn't go elsewhere to get it checked. Here goes:
    "Mag ride is the worst part - we swap these for R8 passive units and is a common swap now.
    AC compressors - never replaced one for a genuine failure, normally mis diagnosed condensers (V8 is engine out, V10 engine in to swap).
    Early V8's have issues with rear ball joints which require full suspension swap (discontinued parts).
    V10's leak from the oil pump drive.
    Clutch is expensive to replace, the pedal should be very light - if not the release bearing is on its way out.
    Carbon build will be awful on V8, much better engine software on the V10 means it isn't as big an issue.
    Other than that they are pretty solid, just do your homework and buy a good one.
    Early V8 R-Tronics are pretty slow to change, the software was much better on the V10's.
    There are only 7 (left of 9) R8 V10 Gen 1 Plus in manual - we look after them all but 1 and I know of one for sale atm.
    If you are choosing, Gen 1 V10 manual......last of the V10 supercars!"
    I should add that some early R8's suffered from frame cracks, Audi released a fix later on but it's one more reason to go with the V10 6MT. If I'm honest my dream spec is a triple black R8 V8 from 2008 just like yours, with the carbon sideblades. I was really close to getting one last year but by the time I checked with the dealer it was already gone. I don't quite like the idea of buying a V10 for daily use since the V8 must be tamer in comparison (I also love V8's, but that's me). If the V8 didn't suffer from all these issues it would 100% be my go to, but I guess I am shopping for V10's...

    Great breakdown! I prefer the V8 personally, also because of the sound. Over here in the US, the V10s are much more expensive than comparable V8s mileage wise, anywhere from $40-80K more. You could buy two higher mileage (30-40k) manual V8s for the the price of a low mileage V10 manual!

  • @randallmilton
    @randallmilton Před rokem +14

    If you’re going to truly drive the car and rack up some miles (and you don’t plan on flipping it / keeping it for the investment dollar), I would recommend the V8 with the gated manual that can be driven all year in all conditions. It’s lighter, more reliable, cheaper to maintain, and sounds better-especially with an upgraded exhaust. You can play around with aftermarket stuff and have a mid-12 second car with a gated manual. That said, if you plan on driving the car minimally / keeping the miles low, having a piece of garage candy, and/or treating the car as an investment opportunity or asset class, I would recommend the V10 with the gated manual. This will hold its value far better, and the benefits of the V8 become moot. However, if money is no object, or you don’t care about the investment, go with either one. I’ve owned multiple vehicles with the 4.2 and the 5.2, and I’ve driven both R8’s. Hoping to pick up a 4.2 R8 in the not too distant future. Cheers!

      I could tune the V8 or modify it to make up the power gap far easier than making up for the over 100 pounds of weight from the engine that also affects the balance. Implying it's only a matter of how much money you have only implies you haven't realized weight is harder to shed than HP gained. It's hard to make a car lighter if you don't want to strip it bare but power is easy.
