It’s time for an Audi R8 RWD vs AWD drag race… With a twist!
Mat and Daniel have pulled up at an indoor ski slope, and they’re about to race each other uphill in these two mighty supercars.
Under the surface, these two cars are almost identical. They’re both powered by the same 5.2-litre naturally-aspirated V10. In the RWD, it produces 570hp and 550Nm of torque, whereas in the AWD it puts down 620hp and 580Nm. The RWD is lighter, though, tipping the scales at 1,590kg. In comparison, the AWD weighs 1,695kg.
However, this is no ordinary drag race! They’ll both start out with summer tyres fitted, after which they’ll switch over to winter tyres! Will there be a noticeable difference? And will the lighter RWD R8 stand a chance?

If you want to get up snow faster you need more agressive tires.

If you have to drive on snow regularly. In most of the UK it's pointless, it rains far too much to get snow for more than a dozen days a year.
Imagine spending £1000 on a set of quality winter tyres to drive 300 miles over a couple weeks on them in a year (plus four wheels, or paying a shop to change the tyres over twice), and after a few years throw them out because they're all dry and brittle just from age. It's literally cheaper to just let everyone stay home on those days.

I'm honestly not surprized, people understimate how big of a difference winter tires make up in snow.
It doesn't really matter what wheels are driving. If you don't give too much gas you can go up almost any real world snow hill.

Since this comparison has been done to death already, I'd actually like to see a side by side of winter tires vs all-season.
Can't remember who, but one channel did all season awd vs winter tire fwd. The all season awd won all the acceleration and track time, winter won braking and subjective control feel.
There's been comparisons done between all seasons on an AWD car vs winter tyres on a 2WD car, which is probably more relevant because a lot of people buy AWD cars thinking that makes them "all weather proof", and the 2WD car with winter tyres does much better in pretty much every way.

This is such a fun and interesting video! I always wondered how good winter tyres were and I also wondered what the advantage was with AWD/Quattro? We can now see that both are very, very impressive!
Honestly, this video here is the real reason I follow and watch car wow. These crazy fun and unique comparisons and tests you guys come up with. Yeah I like the regular legit car reviews, the commentary is great, but a car review is dime a dozen on CZcams.

In 2009, following a heavy (for the UK) snowfall, my 6 month old BMW 520d was stuck on my drive for 4 days. I purchased a spare set of BMW alloys and 4 Continental TS830 winter tyres and all was good. I was able to drive through relatively deep snow at 50 mph (I had been trained to do this is part of my occupation) without any fuss. As I now live on the edge of a city, where the roads are kept pretty clear, I have Michelin CrossClimate tyres fitted to my current car.

Cross climates are super good even in snow though, my fathers quattro a6 had nokian winters before and he alternated between summers every year. Ever since he fitted crossclimate+'s (or crolssclimate 2, whichever is the newest) he hasn't fitted the nokians in winter. They live at the foot of a mountain but it only snows for 2 weeks to a month tbh so winter tires are not essential unless you live in rural finland or somewhere like that.

If it snows, those crossclimates are just as useless as summer tyres. Try Nokian Hakkapeliitta R5 and you know what true winter tyres are.

The difference between summer and winter tyres is shocking. Just for comparison i think it would be really interesting to do a test with all season tyres :)

It's mostly about tyres if u fit some great winter tyres then most cars should be great

Since suspension plays very little role in this, they would probably do worse given the weight. But in the end it's 95% reliant on tires anyway

Actually an interesting test because some people do own these cars and it will be winter soon.... reminds me of Clarkson testing the FF and Bentley on Top Gear in the snow.

You should do one during the summer, showcasing the benefits of having summer tires on instead of winter tires (which some people do)
By far the most entertaining winter driving video I've seen in a long time, but also incredibly concise and informative. If there's one video I'd show someone who thinks AWD alone makes you invincible in the snow, it's this one. Very well done!

Be interested to see how all season tyres fair too. Ive got cross climate2 on my car after coming off the road last year with summer tyres.
Search for the video on winter tyres Tamworth Snow Dome, same slope, the cross climates got to the top.
How are you finding the Cross Climates? I may switch to all seasons this year and I was looking at those
@@andreamusso1469 Happy with them, also got another car on Goodyear Vector 4 Seasons Gen3. These aren't the same as the US braned "all season" as the Vector 4 Season are also winter rated with the alpine symbol.
@@andreamusso1469 they’re great 👍. Bought them in summer so a bit squishy at first but hold the road perfectly fine. I really tell the difference in down pours (great control) I’ll buy again and not yet seen how they perform in winter/low temp/snow. I drive 80mile a day so getting plenty of use out of them. Also no noticeable dip in mpg.

Another test comparing Studded vs Friction winter tyres would be interesting.
There’s not to much difference until you hit ice, then the studded ones will have a clear advantage! 👌🏽
@@dennissmith7214 No. The studded tires have an advantage on snow and ice. The biggest advantage is if there's water on ice. But on the flip side the friction winter tires have an advantage on wet and dry tarmac.
@@ThorsteinKlingenberg Nope on ice mainly, other than that they’re about the same……..I live in Pennsylvania a hilly state I’ve run Toyo G3 ice studdable winter tires the last 3 years…..if you know you know, you don’t know!

The off-center engine placement triggers my OCD. I know that they had to move the engine a bit to the left for the AWD system. But why oh why do they have to place the engine off-center with RWD version as well... That's just lazy Audi.

A compare with Michelin Cross Climates would be interesting. I long since stopped swapping summers for winters and back every year, now just have the cross climates on all year
Problem here is that matt didnt warm up his tires

There are different Quattro systems too.
For example, my car has the same system as an Audi A3 quattro, but my mates Audi A4 quattro is completely different.

The difference tyres make was never clearer to me than when I overtook an RS6 in the snow. Just pulled out and drove round it. No dramas. In a Hilux with BFG All Terrains and only 170bhp to play with!

Reason for the 4x4 sliding back down is due to his front wheels creating a more slippery surface while wheel spinning, and most of the cars brake force is applied upon the front wheels and due to his surface under the front tyres and after wheel spin makes his ability to hold on the slope much reduced in comparison to the grip of the soft surface under the front tyres of the real wheel drive
I commend you for actually running the race with summer tires rather than going straight to winters. Would have been nice to see you guys try to warm up your tires, though I'm sure the cars' owners and everyone in the vicinity are glad that you did not.
Heavily studded tires (think WRC rally car studs) do get warm. The tires can easily be a 100 degrees celcius when driven hard on ice. They cool down fast though.
That would be one expensive curling championship 😅

This is the best video I've seen demonstrating the difference between winter tires vs summer tires in snow. Every other test uses different cars in the comparison or different drivetrains for some reason.
