- Who’s ready for an incredible Audi drag race… On SNOW!
We’ve got Mat in the Audi RS e-tron GT, and he’s going head to head against an Audi RS3 and Audi RS6! The thing is, none of these cars are equipped with winter tyres. They’re about to face off in normal summer tyres to see which can handle wintery conditions the best!
So how do they compare? Well starting with the RS e-tron, it’s packing two electric motors which can put down 646hp and 830Nm of torque. It’s pretty heavy, though, weighing in at 2,345kg.
Then we have the RS3. It’s housing the infamous 2.5-litre 5-cylinder turbo under the bonnet which is good for 400hp and 500Nm. It’s a whole lot lighter than the e-tron, tipping the scales at 1,570kg.
Then finally we have the gorgeous RS6. With a 4-litre twin-turbo V8 engine, this performance estate can produce 600hp and 800Nm. But of course, given the size, it’s pretty heavy, weighing in at 2,075kg.
So they’re all equipped with four-wheel drive, but which will handle the snow the best? There’s only one way to find out… LET’S RACE!

Have to say the e-tron was absolutely controlled over any inclines
But we do have to keep in mind that the tyres have to be the same
In such steep and low grip situations, there is a HUGE diffrence between good tyres and amazing tyres
That kept 'slipping' my mind to say. They should ideally all use the same tyre makes, tred pattern designs and compounds where possible. Good point.

For example the e-tron could have used the michelin x-ice snow
The rs3 and rs6 could have used the michelin alpin 5
On bad snow the x-ice snow would slay the alpin5 no matter the car
@@someguy9520 My old Audi A6 also quattro ( it is 2002 model A6C5 ) 3 litre gasoline engine made this - Last winter where i was testing what it can do i was standing on a reeeaally steep hill. In front of my house where my garage is located is that slope. Its lenght is around 6 meters and the difference between top and the bottom high is somewhere around 1.7m so it is pretty steepy. Brand new tyres, X-ICE michelin. I made it without a slipping tyres. This winter, with same tyres but a little bit worn, it was having a struggeling moment to made it. Same test was done from the same position, in the middle. Tyres always matter, weight also, audi e-tron is nearly 400Kg heavier than my A6 or 300kg heavier than RS6 and it has two motors, no torque converter, direct connected to the rear and front axle, that's bennefit or unfair let's say.

We don't have much if any icd on the road. Some snow, and like -10° at the coldest
In these situations where it's mainly just wet, a friggin all season performs better
Saw my first Audi RS E-tron GT yesterday and was shocked how wide and cool looking they are in person! The RS6 still takes the cake though because it has that cake.
Seriously though the rs etron gt is in my opinion the best looking ev on the market

RS6 had 22 inch low profile tires but the etron GT had 20 or 21 inch tires. That makes a difference espeically starting from the corner.
That e tron is impressive. The extra weight helps it to dig deep in the snow.
Center of gravity is what matters.. etron Has most weight very low to the ground

You might think so until you seen a rear-wheel drive car with proper snow tires pull away from it. Tires are far more important than any all-wheel drive system, no matter how sophisticated. But this is a car show isn't it?
@krane15 i agree and do not agree. I have an a6 with the quattro system.. i tried it on snow with summer tires actually and it did wonders 🤷♂️ so i don't know how to explain that.. but yes tires are important
@@nino_kO1 than that wasn't a bad surface. Try that on an icy road going uphill...I had the same with summer tires on a fwd and was going well until the driveway of my house, where I had to literally gain speed in the street to be able to go up and park it.

@@romansenger2322 The EV had stability control on sport mode, so it was still on while the others had it completely off. This makes a huge difference

This video was probably made for fun, but it is actually extremely interesting and useful... it would be amazing if you start using it as benchmark for future reviews to see how different 4WD systems work! In this case, however, you should tell us which tyres are mounted.
E.g.:
- Touareg v Q8 v Cayenne (sort of "VW snow showdown")
- Defender v Wrangler v Jimny
- Q5 v GLC v X3
- Range Rover v Bentayga v Cullinan

That RS e-tron was amazing. I think indeed the ability for slip management systems to control motor output so quickly and immediately does give it a huge advantage over mechanical systems. The older systems cannot apply/lift/apply/lift power as quickly or in as small increments.
Defo need a thorough, and i mean thorough, Xdrive v 4matic v Quattro v Haldex in the higher end models (M's, 63's, RS and R's) comp please :D
theres cars out there with Xdrive 4matic and quattro badges and they all use haldex systems. Only some more powerfull and sporty models like the rs6 in this video use a more rwd based system. What i mean is that these days Quattro is just a badge. Yeah audi will perform better most of the time in snow but there is no such thing as a quattro system its just a badge for all awd audis
Snow was compacted by the much heavier cars which made it harder for the little rs3 at the end, bet if the cars started the other way around it would’ve been a different result

I really like this test I mean, I'm not an Audi guy but I do want to get a 1st gen R32 golf for Alaska driving, and this video showed me the difference between Quattro and a typical halidex all wheel drive system

First gen haldex was even more fwd biased that this drift spec haldex in the rs3

I can tell you that all season tires are dangerous and useless garbage compared to real winter tires, studded or friction.
You know why they're called "all season"? Because they are CRAP in ALL SEASONS! Get proper winter tires, and proper summer tires.

It just super heavy so a lot more grip, easy as that, put 200 kg in any of other cars and they would have increased grip

Not really surprised to be honest. The extra thousand pounds in weight help tremendously from a dead stop on packed snow. There is a reason why snow plows will add weight when plowing snow.
Tires, suspension travel and wheelbase also matter. Interesting video

The progress is more due to the winter tires than the all wheel drive train systems.
They are most likely using the same tyres on all of em, else that would be dumb af

Having owned a 4wd with twin electric motors, electric is indeed very good at getting you moving and the weight helps. But the catch is stopping where the weight is against you. This video should have done a brake test going down the hill and applied halfway. I suspect the EV would have stopped somewhere in the Cafe.
Having instant delivery of power to whichever area needs it definitely helps as well.

Very valid point that often gets overlooked especially by two tonne 4x4 drivers that sit on people's back bumper in the snow showing off.
Think people forget evs have engine breakingas soon as you touchthe break, and combined with tra tion control its Effectivly a much faster reacting Abs before abs kicks in.
@@simonhenry7867 E tron doesn't engine brake much at all unless you hit the wheel paddles, it just gives a slight regen or slight acceleration by standard to coast at a fairly constant rate no matter if it's a slight decline or incline. As someone who lives in a place that gets LOTS of snow and shitty weather it feels very well thought out for winter conditions but at the end of the day a 2500kg SUV is still sketchy when you break traction particularly in a downhill on sleet.

i would love to see the e-tron climbing up the "hill" after the rs6 spinned, and formed a small ice layer, wich drops the grip exactly where you need it :)

@@ThorsteinKlingenberg maybe different years had different systems, but at least when I had a 2004 (US spec) STI, when the center diff was locked, it was hard to park because the tires would skip because everything was locked.

4WD EV Audis are better on snow than even ZR1 Corvettes.
I have a 2019 RS3 which was terrible last year in the snow. I replaced my winter tires this season however we haven't had any snow yet. I'm looking forward to my first drive in the snow.

Both the EVs I've owned have phenomenal traction control. It's just able to react quicker.

I think it's all about weight distribution.. having that heavy battery pack over all the wheels definitely has an advantage..

The quattro system in the RS3 is actually not made by Haldex/Borg Warner, it is a system made by Magna that has two clutch packs for each rear wheel instead of only one clutch pack for the rear axle in the Haldex/Borg Warner system.

EV torque vectoring is no joke. Electric motors can send such precise levels of torque to any individual wheel to a level that ICE just cannot match
