This song truly sums up 50 years of Tull in 10 mins if any arrangement ever could. All the influences; world music, rock, heavy metal, jazz, blues, folk...it's all here, the quintessential Tull song.
To me, this song is more than just about the city, it’s about the mournful experience of meeting someone who completely captivated you, but only for a fleeting moment, and the sorrowful mysterious tones complement that feeling well. I’m sure everyone here can relate to being served by a waiter at some restaurant that caught your attention on an intellectual level beyond simple lust, but you know you will never see that person again once you leave. That kind of impression is the one I feel from this song.
Seems like only yesterday that I first heard My Sunday feeling off "This was" been hooked on Tull & Anderson ever since. 52 years on & I guess I'm not "Too old to rock n roll" but getting very close to "Too young to die"!
scott merrill I’m 53,....I grew up on Sabbath,Zeppelin,Judas Priest,Nazareth,.......but Tull is so rich in variety after all I think I have about 14 or16 albums,......yes good ole vinyl!
Great track, the old Tull back to life. So many years of tull albums....my favourite is still Benefit...what an album when it came out...I was so young....great memories. Thans Ian Anderson and Martin Barre
im proud i saw Jethro Tull here in my town in Athens a million years ago....i still remember that gig.....Ian spoke to us in Greek.....im gonna love Jethro till my end...
I had only the records until STORMWATCH and thought I knew the way Ian Anderson expressed himself in songs. But now I listened to some songs from CREST OF A KNAVE for the first time, and I almost didn't recognise him and JETHRO TULL. Ian Anderson has really found new ways of writing and arranging songs for JETHRO TULL. Not many can do that. Hats off to Mr. Anderson - one of the few true originators in rock music!
Never ceases to amaze me: Humans can make Unique, complex and great music like this. Tull, in all their incarnations, have and do fill this bill. Keep going JT guys and gals.
Good on you; keep exploring. If you like "Budapest", then look for "Heavy Horses" and other songs from Crest of a Knave to get you going. (Not all Tull songs are good, but there are some real beautiful gems to be found in-between.)
This is an artistic masterpiece of great epic..Tull at their very very best..the music in total harmony..all the instruments..creating an audible symphony unlike most!
I first heard this song on the Bob Harris show on BBC radio.. And yes, I immediately thought it was Dire Straits!... whatever, it quickly became one of my all time favourite songs!!.. God bless 'whispering' Bob Harris!
Agreed - in both dimensions of place and time. In place-dimension, particulalry "Budapest" does it for me, while "Heavy Horses" is my favourite in time-dimension
Heard this for the first time while stationed in Panama. My friends played this all the time at the beach and at the scuba house in Porta Bello, PN. Memories.. smiles
Classic Tull from an underrated LP. Martin Barre is a monster guitarist!!! Three most underrated guitarists from their era; Martin Barre, Dave Davies and Michael Karoli of CAN.
pretty sure that Jethro Tull is not considered metal. they may have some heavy songs, like most other progressive bands, but hardly reason enough to call them 'metal'...
I think it is a bit overrated. Great passages, especially the instrumental breaks, but also boring, repetitive ones. Best piece on the album is Farm On The Freeway - a tour de force and a flawless classic.
It's, overall, a very classy, comforting song. While there are some less exciting bits, they are more than made up for by the whole of the song, IMO. The amateur musical historian in me sees this song was influenced by Dire Straits (in the singing in particular, the use of strings, the overall slow tempo of the song and, against that, the use of contrast between the boring/interesting passages) and that there were similarities with Billy Joel's slow ballad, Leningrad (also another exotic city in Europe), off the Storm Front album in 1989. Both songs were about admiration/friendship.
I agree, Tull is great, and DS are no slouches, either. But listen to this, then listen to "Telegraph Road" (or, really, most of "Love Over Gold") and tell me "Budapest" doesn't sound like it would fit in on that album...
bolderiks Not only this song but a lot of stuff from late 80s and 90's Jethro Tull remind Dire Straits. And nothing is wrong comparing these two bands. Jethro Tull are a great band and Dire Straits are great too. At least, they had their unique sound and guitar playing style. After all, wasn't Bob Dylan who invited Mark Knopfler to play on his albums and to produce Infidels?
TtarArm From now let us comment on each song from the Dire Straits, and write down they sound like Jethro Tull, just to complete the circle of bollocks ;)
One of their greatest songs. Crest of a Knave is an amazing album!
True

Honestly if I had heard this song not knowing who sang it I would have guess that Mark Knopfler and Dire Straits wrote and performed it.

lol Same here.
They actually touched the metal genre several times during their career
@@tixximmi1 are you being sarcastic? They won a Grammy in 89' or 90', for best metal album.
A band like NO other, so fluid and skilled and MUSICAL
Led Zeppelin, Queen, Pink Floyd
This song incorporates all of Tull's genre. Ian has been one of my favorites since 71. Anderson and Zappa. A to Z.
Pero que muy Guapo
Anderson and Zappa... The 2 guys that sounded / came across most drugged-out and drunk, while neither ever took drugs nor alcohol...
You have excellent taste in music.
She wore a perfect smile.
Poetic.
This separates Ian Anderson from the rest of us mortals.
And many more my friend.
Ian had the talent and the work ethic to make him an exceptional rock musician.
certainly not this
Ian....& Martin.
Ian is reason why i've got into music. I will never be better, but trying is ok :) i guess
Im from Hungary! Tank,s Jethro Tull! 2023. April!

I believe Ian Anderson was a wandering minstrel in a past life...his music takes you places, good places. :)
He's a wandering minstrel in this life, that's for sure.
He's a pied piper. All we can do is follow.
A bard of biblical proportions !
The guitar in this song is simply sublime. I so love this song from my teenage days.
