So, happy Mae is ok, and thank you for the eye-opening video, Paul. You and Mae are the paradigm of the relationship we all wish we had. You sir are one of my favorite vloggers because of the sincerity and humility you bring to your videos. With your posts many viewers, myself included, get an epiphany of your life in the Philippines. Someday (pandemic permitting) I can experience "my bliss" as the country reopens. Again, so happy you guys are well.

Great she's okay. It's amazing how reasonable the Philippines is in terms of health care costs. I had food poisoning there I got two IVs and some medication. It was state of the art hospital with immediate Care by three or four nurses whenever I needed them. All I could think was oh my God this is going to cost me at least $5 to 6k. The doctor comes to me and says we don't take US Insurance you're going to have to settle it when you get back to the States. I said all right give me the damage. It was 5,000 pesos $100!!! Cost me more to file the insurance papers then to try to get the $100 back from my insurance company. I love the Philippines and the healthcare is exceptional and the healthcare facilities are exceptional. The immediate attention from the nurses was the greatest part of the stay.

I had a colonoscophy in Cebu a couple months ago. My first medical experience in the Philippines. Best experience of my life in regards to medical people. They were clear, concise, and explained everything completely. Lord knows customer service is lacking in a lot of industries in the Phil, but their health care is top notch.

of a few years back about the quality of the Health Care in the Philippines. Better admit it, even if you hate admitting when wrong!!!😂😅

Hey Paul, ex medic here. Please go buy a Epi pen. Allergic reactions tend to get worse with each exposure. finding out what she is allergic to is the most important thing you can do. An Epi Pen and Benadryl or diphenhydramine should be kept around at all times. Also good thing to do on YT is to watch what do to when someone is having an anaphylactic shock, a severe allergic reaction that may result in death. Multiple exposure to the allergen can lead to severe anaphylaxis. Don't mean to scare ya bud but the medic in me just came out.

I had to go to emergency room at Lakewood Ranch Medical Center (FL, USA) in the middle of the night, a few months ago. Like Mae it was because of an unknown allergic reaction. They gave me an injection and oral medication, followed by for a couple of hours of observation. Then released me with a 5 day prescription for oral meds.
Good thing we have good medical insurance and have met all our deductibles. Together the bills from the hospital, doctor and the prescription only cost me around $540 USD (equiv. 27,000 PHP).
Without insurance it would’ve been over $2,600 USD (equiv. 130,000+ PHP).
50 bucks doesn’t seem like a bad deal to me.
I wish Mae a speedy recovery!

I'm so glad everything turned out ok for Baby Mae... it could have easily been life-threatening, so that's a big praise God! Many years ago, I had the same thing happen to me. As it turned out, it was an allergic reaction to a new laundry detergent my ex-wife had switched to. I think it would be prudent for you and Mae to look at anything she might have either ingested or come into contact with up to 24 hours prior to her symptoms. Praying for her speedy recovery.

If we lived in the Philippines full time I would carry additional health care for those unforseen major medical emergencies we will probably face as we age. Good to see BM recovered well from the alergic reaction, just need to figure out what triggered it. Take care all.

I do need to get that Philippine top health insurance just in case. The best blessing for us Americans and most other foreigner western nations. Is we can afford the bill to pay for this situation in the Philippines. I believe estimates would have been around $1,000 American dollars for what just occurred on getting Baby Mae well in the states. Once again proven that the Philippines is a well cost effective place to retire at. Thanks Paul for this information and GOD bless both of you. Glad she is ok. You might want to make an appointment with a Doctor/allergist to figure out what caused this. Allergies can get worse with time and repeated exposure. There is a test where they put tiny amounts of various allergen's on the skin to see what she reacts to. This way she will know what to avoid.
He may also be able to get an epipen or its equivalent. If she has a reaction, she can use the epipen to reduce the symptoms and buy her time to get to a hospital. Epipens are a bit pricy, several hundred USD, but its better to have one and not need it than to need one and not have it...

As a US physician I especially enjoyed this video. What a difference from the dysfunction and extreme medical bureaucracy we now endure throughout the US, both on the giving and the receiving ends. Intensely frustrating every day, it often makes me regret being a doctor.
Things didn’t always used to be this way. When I was a child, US healthcare experiences were more similar to what you described - not the part about bringing drugs into the hospital, but the overall experience was much more positive. Since then we allowed Congress, lawyers and large corporations to ruin what used to be a pretty functional system. The more our national politicians “fix” systemic problems, the worse they get… multi thousand page pieces of legislation “to the rescue.”
I hope PI doesn’t follow USA into the abyss of dysfunction our healthcare system now is.
Thank you for posting this peek at PI healthcare. Please keep it coming!

Don't allow anyone to fool you on Healthcare here. If you have ability to get on planes quickly to get to Manila or Cebu, maybe you can get decent care, but only if you have a great deal of cash. While I understand the issue of govt. involvement in the med. system in the US, don't try to make a claim that the INSANE bills from hospitals are because of that. That would be a gross misrepresentation of reality.
I'm not talking about anything other than hospital care when I say this, but since many patients will never pay their bills, hospitals have to recoup their losses and that means charging patients a crazy amount of money. In a 5 year period I watched emergency care in my area double in cost. That wasn't some added govt. regulation. Medical bills are the no. 1 reason for bankruptcy in the US and it's been that way for a long time. I understand that hospitals are forced to accept emergency patients and this is where part of the failures happen when it comes to finances for a hospital, but this isn't specifically because of a lot of govt. regulation, and even if the govt. said at some point in the past that hospitals have to accept emergency patients, courts upheld that.
And frankly, if you want an easy system, then you would remove all insurance and go straight to something like Medicare for all US citizens. You have crazy billing departments because of all the different rules of insurance companies, so much so that many offices outsource billing. That isn't because of the govt.
So please, I see what you did as a cut towards the govt. in the US using a situation that really isn't their fault. Going back to a tax system pre 2001 and getting rid of the huge cuts in capital gains tax which affects large investors to where they pay almost no taxes, and then going to something like Medicare for all would be much better than what the US has now, AND it would be affordable for the govt. to run. AND it would be easier for medical offices and hospitals. Hospitals would actually get paid for emergency care, all the time, or almost all the time and there wouldn't be billing from a hospital they intentionally obscure, or even part of the time the HOSPITAL DOESN'T EVEN UNDERSTAND! This has been studied across the US dude. It's really only been recently, because of govt. pressure that you can now get pricing information from some hospitals and you can make a decision on where to go based on that information. This was almost impossible 10 years ago.
And MY tax bill, being a married couple that makes a little above the median income in the US, my taxes wouldn't go up very much, since I didn't get much tax reduction from either the 2001 cut or the 2017 tax cut (maybe $100 a year). I'd be happy as hell if that happened and hospitals could plan on getting paid for the care they give, could reduce their costs, and people wouldn't go bankrupt anymore in the US from medical bills. And then they could even be TRANSPARENT!!
BTW in the PH, hospitals refuse patients who can't pay, even emergencies. THIS is why their costs are low. Everyone pays who gets care.

@@johndoh5182 This is probably not the place to debate Medicare Fur Alles, nor whether a person enjoys Bernie memes. I doubt we will agree on USA system solutions.
Regarding US Emergency Room costs rising exponentially, the blame lies squarely with unfunded mandates in the Consolidated Omnibus Reconciliation Act of 1985 and the Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act (EMTALA) or 1986. The upward cost bending from such interventions is almost without limit. Don’t even get me started on Obamacare’s upward cost bending.
I came here to learn about PI healthcare, not debate about the US system. We can likely agree that the P.I. healthcare system should not be judged from a single ER visit by Baby Mae. Let's not go on further tangents.

    • @WildMidwest1
      @WildMidwest1 Před 2 lety

@@daredevil2593 I thought you were writing about USA until the last sentence. So-called medical bankruptcy is often discussed, but I don’t recall seeing that term in regards to P.I. I am not talking about quality of care now, just out of pocket costs.
Yesterday afternoon I had a second visit with a 65 year old widow who chose to forego a CT scan I ordered seven days earlier at her initial visit. The reason for the CT scan was to identify the source of what is undoubtedly a malignancy in her chest and/or neck. She cannot afford the $75 copayment, versus being able to eat (she says), and she cannot afford cancer treatment copays either. I strongly suspect she has lung cancer. Maybe we will never know if she had something more treatable before the autopsy.
It’s not just in rural P.I. where sad medical dilemmas exist.

The concern would have been anaphylaxis, which is a systemic, hypersensitive allergic reaction (ie; closing of the throat due to swelling, resulting in a lack of oxygen, suffocation, death). With the symptoms presented, more than likely the Doctor would usually order Epinephrine (aka; adrenaline) for possible anaphylaxis. Hives are common in an allergic reaction - facial/throat/etc. swelling and trouble breathing (wheezing) are cause for greater concern and require a trip to the ER.
Paul, if you can, and if you don't already, you should put together a family/household first aid kit. The kit should include, among many other things for many other possibilities, Benadryl (aka; diphenhydramine - an antihistamine for allergic reaction) and Calamine Lotion (for itch).... however, first make sure you or Baby Mae are not allergic to the Benadryl (a very, very small percentage of the population are). In All - Always, Err on the Side of Caution.... as you did.

Who knows how it happened, my guess is allergic reaction (border-line anaphylaxis) to something she ate; Baby Mae is pretty savvy as to food (she was in the catering industry) so this might have been an ingredient that she has not been exposed to before. But she may have brushed against a poisonous grass/bush (poison oak or poison ivy) on the way to filming with her friends(?) I doubt that the hospital would invest in a costly lab investigating to find the cause of her reaction.

All kind of things can happen with hives. A previous wife of mine came down with severe hives once. Meds they injected did little good. After a few days of getting nowhere, they had what was about like a stand up tanning booth where they could disl up the amount of UV exposure she wiukd get. She had to stand naked in this booth while they blasted her with UV RAYS, starting the first treatment of about 2 minutes. We had to go back to the hospital every other day until the hives subsided, each treatment they increased the strength and the time they zapped her. It took about 6-7 trips until the hives cleared. They did extensive allergy testing on her and could not determine the exact cause. They did say they felt strongly it was plant based. Lots of things grow wild in Texas that can zap you by just brushing against it with open skin. It could have been life threatening. We lived in the country and my job of keeping the area around the house clear of growth became a much higher priority. Lucky it never happened again. Glad Baby Mae responded to the medications. I wouldn’t wish that on anyone. You’ll take care. I made it back in country a couple weeks ago. Once I get settled, hope to make a trip down your way for a visit. Looking foresrd to meeting you both.

That’s about how long it took me to find several articles mentioning the UV treatment. I would post a screenshot but first, Not sure it is possible here in comments and I don’t know how if it is. Second, It’s not my vlog so my comment should be sufficient to rebuke your statement. So do a little research my friend, and if you decide to, proper medical term for hives is urticaria. Years ago, before I hit 60 years of age, we had a lengthy experience at the Philippine Orthopedic hospital in Manila. My best friends wife had shattered bones in a leg due to a fall. She required surgical repair. I was allowed to donate blood (under 60Y/O) along with a few others to replace what would be needed during the operation. We were stationed outside the OR and many times during the procedure, a nurse would appear asking for another unit of blood or something from the pharmacy across the street from the hospital. Can you imagine that, we were the messenger staff for the OR! Down several flights of steps, hand over the note requesting the blood and run the blood back upstairs. Run across the street and bring back what was requested. Other than drugs and prescriptions that had to be purchased, the bill was ZERO. That old building surely looked like it could use a coat of paint but I have to say the treatment they offer is TOP SHELF.

And the moral of this story after thankfully a positive and happy ending here, is that even if you don't like riding motor cycles or enduring the cost of running a car, then invest in a well serviced tuk tuk !!...it's a good option I reckon. Best wishes and I hope that baby Mae makes a good recovery. When I lived in Thailand I was hospitalised for 4 days after being stung by 3 wasps in the garden. Here back in the UK, I am still taking cetirizine hydrochloride (allergy relief) pills daily 4 years after the event in order to prevent hives putting a severe rash condition over my body. Otherwise I am ok but expats beware ! wasp stings in Asia can be fatal depending on your physical condition. A good idea is to always keep allergy pills in the bathroom cabinet. Best wishes Paul and baby Mae, from Tom in the UK.
