    I have very few mechanical skills. This video was helpful for replacing the entire headlamp assembly, not just a light bulb. I followed this video with success. I did not remove the entire bumper. I removed bumper fasteners under the hood and by the tire on the side of the headlamp replacement. I did not remove any screws or fasteners on the bottom of the bumper. I was able to pull the bumper far enough out to get the headlamp out and the new headlamp in. It took about an hour of time. I paid $110 for the headlamp assembly on amazon. The garage wanted $575 for the headlamp assembly and labor to install it.

    I used this video to replace my headlight assemblies. It was very helpful, especially the way he pointed at and counted the screws and fasteners. My 2010 Prius is 8 years old and many of the plastic fasteners were brittle and broke, and most of the screws were quite rusty. If you do this I'd suggest stocking up on screws and fasteners. I also didn't disconnect the fog lights, just left the bumper resting on the ground while I worked. I also left all the headlight wires connected and just put on new bulbs and put everything in my new assembly- I'd recommend doing them one at a time so you can see one done properly where all the wires go! Finally for those of you who are mocking this video, the reason I had to replace my assemblies is that I replaced the passenger's side myself without taking the bumper off, and it was crooked and wound up melting part of the assembly. So be careful if you try to get your hand in to change it!

      I, too, melted part of the assembly, which is why I'm looking at this today.

    Even easier way to remove passenger side headlamp bulb is - remove (2) 10 mm bolts holding the coolant tank and move the coolant tank out of the way. DO NOT have to remove the hoses because it stretches far enough out of the way for you to reach under and remove/replace the lamp bulb. You do not have to remove the air intake assembly. The coolant tank had pink coolant in our 2010 Prius.

    • @TJLepore
      @TJLepore Před 7 měsíci

      I didn't even have to do that. Just one screw attached to air intake per the manual. And I wear gloves size L. WAY easier.

  • @garyrohr2019
    @garyrohr2019 Před 8 lety +41

    There is a much easier way to replace the passenger headlamp assembly. Make some hand room by disconnecting the coolant hose and the three screws for the air intake assembly and push everything out of the way so you can get your hand in there. The bulb connection is pointed toward the bottom - turn 90 degrees clockwise toward the engine and the bulb will pull out of the housing. Press the tab and pull the old bulb free. The secret of getting the new bulb in is don't connect it to the harness. Point the bulb connector toward the outside of the car and insert it into the housing then turn it 90 degrees so it is pointing down. Then connect the harness.

    Tried to change the SIDE MARKER light bulb on my 2014 Prius yesterday using some of the "easy" way as shown in some videos. Spent half a day trying to do it. I did finally manage to get the bulb out but could not get it back in. Finally gave up around 6PM. Don't recommend trying it, just do it the right way, so easy. Saw this video this morning and removed the front grill/bumper cover and took took the assembly out and changed the bulb. Was easy and quick. It only takes a few minutes to take the front end off. Thank you very much for the video.

    Very informative video. I just watched it AFTER I finished replacing the passenger side low beam without removing anything but the radiator overflow tank hose. It is tight but possible! Another thing that is important to me. There are no petroleum derived "plastic" body panels! Toyota developed the material from ramie, commonly known as China grass and one of the strongest natural fibers.

  • @Tinsby
    @Tinsby Před 4 lety +1

    I have to take issue with you showing a sheet metal screw as being the ONLY type of screw holding the lower pan to the bumper cover. Unless yours have been changed, the normal configuration is some of the bolts are machine thread, they are NOT all the sheet metal ones like you show. This makes it important to keep track of what screw/bolt came from where when you re-assemble things.
    I have LED'S in all my marker and park lights I don' t know why you'd not use them, you'll never have to replace 'em unless you get a defective one.
    Nice video thanks a lot, and anyone thinking of installing aftermarket fog lights, take it from me and remove the bumper cover it's FAR easier!
    Thanks To Dr. for a good video!

    Great Video. My headlight has a water leak and need to replace. As far as replacing the bulbs, I have been replacing them without moving a thing. Removing the bulb is straight forward. But installing the bulb can be tricky. I found that installing the bulb first (twist in place), then connecting the wire is the easiest way. Good Luck !

    Thanks for doing this. A lot of people are critical for no reason. This IS what is needed to replace the entire headlight assembly. Yes there are easier ways to replace bulbs. But I want to replace my entire assembly as you have done. New lens make cars look SO MUCH BETTER. I replaced them on my old Ford Explorer out of necessity, and now I'm doing it on my Prius for looks...and better vision. As far as Prius bulbs go I've replaced them in the past without bumper removal. Driver side is a snap. Passenger side is a bear, but I FINALLY got it. No mention about headlight ALIGNMENT. I'm going to tackle the new lens, but wonder if you had to align them after replacing the assembly. I'll keep looking around for more info on that before I start. Thanks!!!!

    Immensely helpful video! Needed to replace both R and L headlamps because the low beam bulbs, if not positioned properly, will melt away the inside housing. Toyota said it would be $370 + tax for parts and $170 for labor for EACH LAMP equaling more than $1.1K to repair for both!?! That is ludicrous - more expensive than buying a new transmission or engine!!! Hence, I purchased the headlamps on ebay for $200 and because of this video, was able to fix myself in 2 hours. Thanks again Car D. Ologist!!

It helps to remove the radiator expansion tank to get at the bulbs on the passenger side. Two bolts to remove.

You didnt go into detail about unscrewing all the fasteners but you did include things like bulb size and that hidden tab. i just changed my original assemblies because the light was dim and there was water in the headlights. When I took the old ones off I discovered that the mounts where the headlight bulbs actually get screwed into were cracked and broken. Thats why my headlights were so dim.

    Thank you! I was able to do this in 1.5 hours and I didn't have to take whole bumper off because I was replacing just the passenger side headlight. I took off the recommended screws/clips. But forgot the middle one..lol, However, I realized the right side of the bumper could be pulled back, which allowed me to access the headlight fine. It was a bit tricky to get it back in, but it worked out. I also agree, these bulbs on the passenger side are very difficult to change, which is the reason why I had to replace the headlight. I put the bulb in wrong and it melted the plastic housing around it. Again, Thanks!

    Tip for the passenger side: partially remove the front bumper by unclipping the top panels and also the passenger wheelwells (1 10mm bolt and 1 clip). Headlight has 3 screws (2 top, the other is accessible by pulling down on the bumper to expose the side bolt. This is why you need to partially loosen the bumper), move the headlight unit an inch or two forward and this gives you access from behind to install the led bulb. The protruding coolant tank bracket makes install impossible, which is the reason for moving the headlight forward.

    Question for you sir! Where did you get your replacement lamp assemblies and have they worked out since 2015? Mine chews through bulbs monthly if not 3 weeks. The drivers side lens is clearly marred, melted, burnt in some way. the pattern is off and overall it's half the light output of passenger side. Looking at replacements. Hope it's going well and hope to hear about your supplier. Cheers!

      If you don't insert the new headlight bulb correctly, only two of the three tabs mate, causing the bulb to be tilted inside the housing. Unfortunately, this hot bulb now points too close to the plastic housing and melts it, which is probably what happened to you. Sorry.

    On my 2008 prius I can remove all the top screws including the one in the wheel well. The bumper pops out, leans out forward and you can access all the rest to get the headlamps out. There are many screws on the bottom of 2008 bumper, so it saves a lot of time and very little time spent fitting it back into place. One video on youtube a women mechanic does it in about 5 minutes.

    I love this video! So I tried to replace the passenger headlight on my 2010 prius. I had a hard time getting my hand in there, but somehow I was able to. I just couldn't get the bulb to lock in place. I took it to the dealer for an oil change and asked them to look at it. They said the bulb wouldn't lock because the headlight assembly was cracked and wanted over $600 to fix it. I said no thanks. I watched this video and bought a new headlight assembly from www.rockauto.com for around $100 and was able to replace it myself. It was a lot easier than I thought it was going to be and now my passenger side headlight works!

    yeah, it can be done without removal... 6ft, 275 lbs with big hands... I got into the passenger's side lamp ... off and replaced the bulb. 5 min.

    Thank you! Just what I needed to give me the push to do this myself! (Now where do I get those little plastic tabs that snap of if you aren't super gentle :) )

    I don't know why you have to go through all that trouble. I managed to replaced all my parking, high & low beam lights with LED ones WITHOUT removing the bumper. you don't even need to remove the coolant reservoir to make room. Just stick your hand in there and get it done! Literally took me 15 min, easy

    I gotta do this to replace the headlight assemblies they are sun damaged. They used to have a blue hue but soon faded having left the car outside for two years but still waxing never solved the problem..

    OMGSH thank you for this! Passenger side was ridiculous, still can't fit driver side bulb back into housing, likely gonna have to remove the whole thing to get a good look at it. Sheesh!

      Went back this morning and completely removed the bumper (except for wiring). Barely managed to install drivers' side low beam (housing is slightly damaged). Would have cost $90 at the dealership (and my satisfaction of a completed job), so thank you very much!

    My dad did the passenger side bulb without taking the headlight out. It's quite hard but it surely does not require small and nimble hands.

    eXCELLENT CAMERA WORK AND STEP BY STEP DES ASSEMBLY ...HOW LONG DID IT TAKE?..
    DO I REASSEMBLE IN REVERSE ORDER?

    I replaced them without taking anything off it just took some time. if you can touch it you can take it out. I am also very good with my hands the passenger side could use a few parts out shown in other videos. like the washer reservoir and air intake if you can't get the bumper back in a mechanic will rob you.

    Any bulb I can replace without removing front bumper. Marker lights included. And I have large hands :)

      photoshutter I can’t, and I’ve tried. Did you do the side parking bulb? NOT the front parking bulb.
