- The Ford F-150 Tremor could be called the Raptor Light, because just like light beer it doesn't quite give you the kick that the original gives you. Not that anyone expects the $86,015.00 CAD F-150 Tremor to beat the $100,000+ (price in Canada) F-150 Raptor, but that pricing also pairs the Tremor conveniently with the similarly priced, all-new Chevy Silverado ZR2.
Today we take the Ford F-150 Tremor out on the trails of Canada to take a look at the upgrades that come with the Tremor trim, as well as test its off-roading capabilities! From fast-paced Baja-style trail runs to proper high banking and inclination rocky trails, we will see what the F150 Tremor is made off and if the step down in pricing compared to the Raptor is meet with an adequate step down in capabilities. Or does the Silverado ZR2 ruin Ford's off-road party? Find out in today's off-road review!

I love these off-road reviews! I highly suggest checking out my ZR2 and Raptor reviews after watching this one. The difference in capabilities (especially during the Baja-style bit) is astounding!
The Tremor was designed to be capable off road and still tow and haul heavy unlike the ZR2 and Raptor. Most reviewers fail to mention that.
Must say the Tremor is definitely better overall truck over the ZR2 and Raptor. Especially with dealer markups. ZR2 being over $80K and Raptor too. I picked up a fully loaded Tremor for far less, leveled it for a few hundred and sits like an F250. I guess for high speed off-roading the other 2 trucks are far better, but for overall practicality and looks the Tremor is a beast!
I think you nailed it. The Tremor is an amazing do everything truck, while both the Raptor and ZR2 make more sacrifices.
Tremor is the most rounded of them all.
It definitely comes with the fewest sacrifices while still offering great capabilities. I really liked it!
What are you talking about the interior on the 402 a package is awesome. It looks better than that yellow stitching on the ZR2 that doesn’t match anything.
I find the interior materials to be of higher quality in the ZR2. That being said, the F-150 is still quite nice!
Ford has an off-road beast for Baja - the Raptor which is in a different class than anything chevy/GMC makes including the ZR2. For weekend warriors that work, need a daily driver, and haul a good boat or trailer - the Tremor is tough to beat. Better gas mileage, more torque and lower RPMs, more usable dashboard with high tech - 402A package, Torsen front differential in 4H, and better looks IMO (projector headlights and LEDs all the way around). Not to mention the fold flat work surface inside the Tremor. There's just too many things this review missed on the Tremor - go check it out yourself. Ford knocked it out of the park.
I agree, it's great truck and I think you nailed the target demographic! I left most of the interior out as I covered that in my Raptor review (including the awesome fold flat work area!) as you unfortunately always have to be short and concise with CZcams.
There is some missing information in this review. Firstly you didn't talk much about the front Torsen diff. You also didn't explain that you can cause it to lock up by lightly applying the brake.and that unlike the ZR2 the lockers both work in 4WD High. Actually you can lock the Torsen in the front axle without locking the rear axle which the ZR2 can not do either. You also didn't explain how much smaller the turning circle is due to Trail Turn Assist. Then there is the issue of the two motor options, the V8 Tremor is winch compatible, and all Tremors fit 35" tires which the ZR2 doesn't.
I always have to be selective of what information I put into the review, otherwise we're dealing with a 30+ min video which the CZcams algorithm unfortunately doesn't like. That's why appreciate you adding additional information here! I did show off the Trail Turn Assist though, and I think it's quite obvious that the ZR2 can't turn even remotely as tightly!
Post more vids
Torsen isn't standard. 35" tires might fit...but it is highly dependent upon wheel choice. Most will rub without trimming or a small lift in the front.
I kind of agree @@daveharness70 that the Torsen is optional on the 400A in Canada, the 401A in North America, but it was standard on the 402A. What most people don't know is the Torsen is a dealer installed option on any 4WD F-150. I've had mine going on 5 years now.
Now as for 35" tires they fit the Tremor fine. 285/75R-18 tires are actually 35.1" tall which makes them actually about 0.4" taller then most "35"" tires, and they fit the Tremor perfectly. Now a 33x12.5R-18 will rub and so will a 35x12.5 but that is because it is too wide, not because it is too tall. You could also fit a 35x10.5 tire easily. None of those tires fit on the ZR-2.
@FABULOUS OFF ROAD DESIGNS I kinda agree too! Torsen in the Tremor is factory installed. But you can get the Torsen installed at the dealer after the purchase, yes.
I have yet to personally go to 35s on my Tremor, but I've seen several videos and many people to experience rubbing. Perhaps not with highway driving.. but at full lock with the suspension compressed.
Glad this video popped up for me. I really wanted to hear a good comparison like this one.
New 23 Tremor Black 402A 3.5L owner. I do like the ZR2 but sorry, the Tremor is an amazing vehicle. Raptor Torsion limited slip diff, works all the time- in 4A, 4H or 4L and works well while turning. Huge help in all situations and time tested w/the Raptor. Chevy doesn't have an edge here. The 3.5L is a beast and delivers buckets of torque at crazy low rpms- incredibly fast and fun. It's as fast as Raptor in 1/4 mile at 13.9 sec and .1 sec slower in 0-60 at 5.3 vs 5.2 for the Raptor (car& driver review) Ground clearance is still very good for the Tremor. Love the Raptor running boards. Not sure if ZR2 comes stock w/them. The interior to me is amazing and rivals my 2018 Platinum I had. The truck just looks mean and still manages to ride very smooth as a daily driver. I like the look/feel of the 33" tires and rims as well as the black dual exhaust. I think Ford raised the bar for this segment.
It sure is a great truck, and I hope my review didn't come over as negative. I really liked the Tremor!
Drove the ZR2 and Tremor this weekend. On road, the Tremor outshines the ZR2. Smoothness and seat comfort aren't even comparable, Tremor is way better. My biggest issue with the ZR2 was the break feel. Super heavy, and feels like you have to push way too hard to stop. And I seriously doubt many people will push their truck hard enough to truly need a front locker vs the front Torsen diff the Tremor can have. I have a 2014 Rubicon that I have taken to Moab, Colorado, Arizona, and around California, and can count on one hand the times I truly needed a front locker. Just my 2 cents. PS I have owned Chevy's and GM's my whole life so I am not biased towards Ford, I just think its a better truck right now.
Appreciate your input, especially considering the off-roading experience you bring! The Tremor definitely is a great truck and I agree with your point that most people will ever need or utilize the ZR2's front locker. Regarding the seats, I didn't ever get quite comfortable in the seats of the Tremor. But that is a very individual thing.
I had an 18 Raptor and now have a 22 Tremor. I don't do any off roading, so the Raptor mostly felt out of it's element. The braking you describe is what I experienced on the Raptor. Slowing down quickly from highway speeds was frightening at times. That was my biggest compliant with it. The Tremor feels right at home on road and the braking is very good. Being 4 years newer, it of course has more tech then the Raptor did. For me, the Tremor was a good choice.
Zr2 suspension is tuned for baja, doesnt tow very well because of it.. on interiors I think its a matter of preference and opinion, in my opinion the Tremor has a much better looking interior, specially if you get the panoramic sun roof which extends to the very back, gives you more light and view.... also available feautres like pro power onboard and Torsen front diff.. you get more torque and it does fantastic in the mid to low speed trails, very well rounded good looking truck in my opinion👍
The Tremor is definitely the more versatile truck when comparing daily usage compared to the ZR2! It is a great truck.
If someone wants a ridiculously large V8 as a daily, get a ZR2. My Tremor 402A spec is a hell of a truck and I'm not into serious off-roading or getting 12 MPG. So, Raptor, ZR2, TRX, ok, if someone lives in AZ and is out in the desert all the time doing a 100 MPH, yep, that's what you want. If you tow now and then, want to good ride, and a great looking truck Tremor's a good option.
The Tremor sure is the most versatile option out of those 4! I hope my review didn't come over as negative, I certainly really liked it!
@@GCCarsCA Well, Critical for sure and everyone has the right to express their opinion on a truck. I think at the prices in CA $$ it wouldn't be the best choice for many. It is a good compromise between what I feel are over the top models like the Raptor, ZR2, and TRX. Those appeal to many who have to have the baddest truck out there but are certainly compromising in many areas for a "Truck." MPG, Towing, Comfort, reasonableness are what tend to come to mind. So, the Tremor IMO is a decent compromise in a truck that's above a run of the mill F150 but still very useful and somewhat reasonable at the same time.
Amo esta camioneta 💖
Here's a secret: I got a new 2023 F150 4x4 supercrew ecoboost for $43k, then installed a TRUE 2" lift front and rear with new rear shocks, as well as replaced the stock 33" tires (yes oem tire is 33" when 20" wheel is optioned from the factory) with a more aggressive all-terrain, for $2k. Total investment: $45k. And its now a Tremor. Same twin turbo V6. Same exact transmission/transfer case/rear end. Same exact boxed frame. Same everything. But with the $30k savings, I bought my wife a new suv. Anyone that wants to talk about "revised upper control arms" or "orange seat stripes and tow hooks" I am ready to discuss. I know from first hand experience that Tremor fares no better on a typical legal forest trail than my setup. And I have more ground clearance up front with true 2" lift instead of the front 1.5" on Tremor. Plus, that huge rake actually makes the approach angle worse lol.
Yeah but it's not a real Tremor.
My wife's new suv doesn't know that. Besides, the lifted F150 is just as capable. And honestly, with +12 offsets and arguably better tires, it looks better. Tremors are a neat idea, don't get me wrong. But let's be honest, they're for buyers who either don't know how to go about lifts, wheels and tires, or don't have the time. Unfortunately you pay a premium for convenience.
Yeah but it’s not a tremor. Congrats though.
Yeah but everyone knows you cheaped out and it doesn’t look as good either.
Problem is that none of that would be warrantied and calculated into the specs. For example, how does your tow and payload get affected by all these changes that aren't engineered in? Whereas the Tremor, you know exactly what you are getting. Plus, you might not get all the software that comes with the Tremor.
I do like your idea though, if it fits you.
I appreciate ‘your’ opinion.
I appreciate 'your' comment
I was looking at the Toyota Tundra TRD PRO and it was shocking to see how much cheap plastic that truck has with dealers adding 6K markup fees on top of that. Plus it's unacceptable to have an "off-road truck" without any tow hooks. This Tremor on the other hand I have found them at sticker price and the quality and finish on this truck is amazing. It's perfect on the pavement and fun off-roading. Best of both worlds.
Tundras go for crazy amounts these days. I would definitely chose the F-150 over it if I had the choice.
Just wondering why the comparison is using a ZR2 vs the tremor when the clear comparison is the trail boss or AT4 vs the tremor. The ZR2 is trying to compete with the raptor (not saying its a close competition) but just seems an odd comparison choice. Sorry, easy for me to say and it wasn't necessarily nitpicking you as I have seen other people make these comparisons. Thanks for actually driving it in a real world situation. I work construction all around Canada and its hard to find people who actually use these trucks to their capabilities. Keep up the great videos!
Good question! You are right, from a purpose perspective the Tremor is more comparable to the Trail Boss or AT4, but we chose to compare it to the ZR2 for two reasons:
1) We actually tested the ZR2 off-road, we haven't been able to do in a Trail Boss or AT4 yet
2) The ZR2 and this Tremor match almost exactly on pricing. So we approached this review from a "Best Off-roader for the money" perspective.
Hope that makes sense and thanks for the kind words! :)
Thanks for the answer. I actually didn't realize you could spec out a tremor to $100k like the ZR2's. It's actually kind of nice to see the comparison as I can get an XLT type tremor in the $70k-$80k range but always thought the ZR2 would be better. @@GCCarsCA
I think when you move into the price range of Tremor, ZR2, Raptor etc, the price of the vehicle moves further down the list of considerations. I'd rather pay more to get exactly what I want instead of settling for something because I saved some money.
Absolutely a valid point!
Can you send me this trail location please. I have a Tremor too
Of course! Here it is: 44.0818950, -78.1469820
Great video! I've got a tremor in Peterborough and will have to check out that trail. Is it free to use?
Nice review but most people are really tired of the Tremor, Raptor comparisons. Of course it's not the same as a Raptor, it wasn't meant to be. Most people don't Baja race so the comparison is ridiculous at this point.
That was my primary reference point during that review. I later reviewed the Silverado ZR2 which makes for a better comparison: czcams.com/video/kvEH__NBZdA/video.htmlsi=7FpyZc33dzQ3KTFD
@@GCCarsCA .. I understand, but not every vehicle review needs to be a comparison. Most comparisons are based on opinion and are rather useless.
You definitely look better without the mustache.
I "tweaked" its appearance a little bit since this video was filmed, so it looks a little better now. But I appreciate the feedback! Might change back at some point 👍🏻
Wait, Ford put the same width and height tire on this F150 "just below the Raptor" package as what comes on a basic sub-$50k STX with 20" wheels? Interesting. And, the suspension height difference is barely an inch. Oh and all the same drive modes except rock crawl (which us basically the same as putting ANY 4x4 F150 in 4 Low anyway). Hmm.. what's all the hype again?
Completely different suspension- much more flex and rear clearance, 2” up front- 1”wider stance, off road tech not available on any other model, front rear tow hooks, raptor exhaust, raptor side rails, front rear lockers, rock/crawl- trail turn assist..
"Trail Control." 😂 what a joke. Only thing this feature does is effectively get all our trails closed for tearing crap up!
Please ease-off on the background music levels...
Noted, will go easier on background music in future reviews. Sorry for that!
The Chevy will be rusting out by the wheel wells after four years up here in the north with the salt. The Ford will be fine
"Raptor, which is obviously more capable." Really? How exactly? OK so seriously, can we all be honest here; how much MORE capable really? Yes you can send a Raptor over a reasonable jump and not have to turn it into insurance later. Yes you can race around on sand dunes with its wider tire and stance. But what about for the other 90% of owners who won't do any of those things? What about those just wanting to go on LEGAL trails in the woods to get to a fishing hole or take in some sights? Face it, not only is Raptor overkill for this, but it's actually WORSE than a Tremor, or even standard F150 4x4, due to its sheer size and weight. Sorry to any Raptor owners who are now $100,000 poorer, but these are the facts. Unless you are at the dunes or wanting to jump your F150 for likes on your page, there is no way a Raptor makes sense on typical mountain/forest trails if you want to be responsible and follow the rules (and not ruin it for everyone else by going offroad and getting another trail closed for good). Seriously, not only does something like Tremor get you everywhere you need to go, but really, ANY F150 4x4 with a 2" lift and slightly better 33" tires. I know this from first-hand experiences. Tremor is a great idea from Ford, but unfortunately the price point is still off. As long as I can lift ANY 4X4 F150 (including the sub-50k 4x4 STX) 2" front and rear and install better 33" all-terrains, all for $2k, I will never pay over $65,000 for an F150 tremor with the same setup.
Have you ever done any baja-running in a Raptor vs any other truck? It's completely in a league of its own. And you're correct that most people don't need a Raptor, but people buy cars / trucks based on what they want, not what they need. And that's why I'm glad that things like the Raptor exist - they're fun!
Can't argue with you on that lol. I'm glad Ford makes them. I'll never own one, nor will I own the GT supercar. But I'm glad they're both Fords!
Too heavy on fuel
With that consumption I'd should have been the 5.0, ha!
