I currently own an HP 17" Envy that is many years old. I had replaced the HDD with a 500GB SSD and because it has an i7 CPU, 16GB ram and Nvidia 2GB Video card, it works pretty well for my needs. This seems like a good laptop for a nice price. I would probably like to move up to the 4K Video since I watch a lot of videos and real 4K is incredible! Thanks for the video.

Hey Bob. Thanks for the awesome review. It is very convenient to have a unit in the house for the family. I really like the recent price to performance ratio that HP has got going on. I've had 4 HP laptops over the course of over 8 years, and other than a couple of battery replacements, they are all still fully functional.

I have the i7 10th gen with 12 gb of ram. For gaming, I use it for RTS, world building, and CCG gaming. It’s more than capable of these games. I even found it can run Fortnite at a solid 60fps at 900p medium settings. Even at 1080p only dropping below 60fps under very intense pressure. I still rather play Fortnite on console, but that just shows you what it can do.
Outside of that it’s a solid productivity laptop. The screen is amazing.

Looks like a very good and flexible work laptop.
With up to 32gb ram, ssd, ok graphics card, 17inch screen, nice keyboard with num pad, and quiet ( a very underatted feature ) it would be great for AutoCad and other office applications where built in graphics aren't sufficient. With some light fortnite on the side after hours.
If there was an AMD in there we'd be raving about this.

Just bought an HP 17 laptop and I am just blown away with the value I got for the money. My configuration is 11th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-1135G7 @ 2.40GHz 2.42 GHz/ 12GB Ram/ 512 GB SSD and FHD for $600. Prior to this I bought a Lenovo Ideapad 3i 17inch for $400. I wanted to love it but while the Intel Core i3 i3-1115G4 has good reviews and can beat some older generation i5 chips, it is still dual core. Plus the system had no ssd, but a 1TB HDD @5400 rpm and the resolution was 1600X900. I just loved the slim form factor. I figured if I've already spent $400 I might as well add some extra to get a system that I will have for much longer. I thought the HP laptop was going to be a big clunker, but boy was I happy when I received my delivery. What a great device for the money! Looks like a premium aluminum build but is also lightweight. Bravo HP!

Thanks. I have the 15" from a few weeks ago, maxxed out everything, and it's pretty amazing for what you said (not family laptop, but it can run some business programs, design, even video editing pretty well). Also it's funny when I'm carrying it and someone thinks "ultraportable!" and tries to pick it up 😂 *The* unforgivable (and I'm using my old Toshiba now because ...the old Toshibas are great) is that LARGE INCH-THICK BOTTOM OF THE DISPLAY that ruins my experience. What the H*II is that even supposed to BE?! UGH! The bezel's okay, but the "HP branding LANDING STRIP" is ...not. It's not okay. There are other foibles (no numlock light on keypad when numlock's on; *function keys are just for "media"* and nitpicky things), but it's fast, the thermals are great (wish the 15" had the 17" lid design - I prop it up at a desk)... but I doubt I'll buy HP again with that ridiculous looking OVER-1" awful evil bottom strip on the display. 😱

Hey Bob great review, I want to add some my review experience of this like laptop.
I have the 15' pavilion with same chassis style ,keyboard mousepad ... (15-cw00xx).
I have it like 2 years with the ryzen apu 2500u , I can say it's a very good laptop all around, I bought it like 550€ at media markt Belgium, great price ! , so the screen is very good 1080p 60Hz ips matte +/- 250nits, keyboard amazing, webcam amazing ,mic amazing , speakers very good for the size of it specially tweaked by bang and olufsen, I tried it generic windows but it sound dull lmao. Just 3 downsides , 1 :mousepad is plastic and the plastic silver paint did come out at the edge of the mousepad (harsh use I guess ), 2 : Well I do game on it while pumping up the tdp(manually "ryzenadj" )but it has a mediocre thermal solution, enough for stock tdp tho. 3 : it has nvme ssd drive "stock version" i wanted to add normal ssd ,there is a place next to battery for additional ssd but laptop came without Instal bracket nor the necessary cable to connect with the motherboard. Have to buy separate for like 60 ish € ....
Just last thing tearing apart of this laptop for the first time is a pain in the a$$ hidden screws all over the place...
Well I guess I'll pass it down to my little sister when I will buy a gaming laptop, If it still survives 😂😂😂

I think the Envy 17 would be better suited if they turned it into a creator workstation like the XPS 17. If it is going to be 6 lbs, probably best just to throw in some serious H-series hardware. Otherwise need to go super light weight like the LG gram and use the efficient U-series.

I went to Best Buy today and saw this laptop. I have a 4-year-old Surface Book 2 and looking to upgrade. I like the 17" screen for my old eyes. LOL I only watch CZcams videos, so not sure I need the 4K?? I like that the Surface Book detaches, but I never really used it or the stylus pen, so I won't miss it. Is there a good competitor to this? Great review.

Hey Bob, I have not purchased a p.c. in 20+ years and was wondering if you could make a recommendation, I am going to take some day trading classes and need a laptop. I know I want a big screen, tons of ram, ssd, number keys, and enough of whatever ports hook up extra screens. I don't know anything about brands, possessor speeds- higher is better I guess, I really don't want to spend weeks going down a rabbit hole here. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

I wish 120 Hz screens become standard also for non-gaming laptops . I'm also fan of old school games between 2002-2008. I don't mind if it is a 3:2 screen, it'd be also great. 1800x1200, 1920x1280 or bit more - more compact, less bezels, more productive.

    • @kon_radar
      @kon_radar Před 4 lety +1

3:2 for gaming - older games? All classics like GTASA, Oblivion, etc. have Widescreen fixes made by the community. Too small viewing angles? - no problem, just increase the FOV.

I need a family laptop; understanding this is NOT a gaming laptop, can it handle Fortnite @ at 60mhz or close to it? Our foster kiddos all play it & I simply don’t want to build another rig with the continued supply chain disruptions and the pricing instability. Any input is greatly appreciated! Be safe, thanks for the hard work you put into your reviews.

I bought this computer and have been using it for a couple of days. One of the things that you should know about this computer that is ABSOLUTELY AWFUL is the lack of contrast between the keys themselves and the letters. In normal light conditions, when you look at the keyboard there is often no contrast at all between the letters and the keys. It literally looks like you are using a keyboard with no letters on the keypads. It is horrible. I am finding that even in daylight conditions I am having to turn on the back lighting just to barely be able to see the letters on the keys. I am going to continue to use the computer for a few days to see if I can adjust to this problem, but if I am consistently finding it ANNOYING to have a keyboard that basically appears to have no letters or numbers on the keypads, then I am going to have return it. The reviewer above did a great job discussing this at the 7:00 minute mark, and I thought "how bad can it be? It can't be that bad, I can see the letters on the pads in the video." IT'S HORRIBLE. If you enjoy having a computer that in many conditions is like having a computer with blank key pads, no lettering on the key pads at all, then this is the computer for you. For me, I HATE IT so far. I hope that I can adjust and get used to it, but the keyboard is a major portion of your interaction with the computer and this keyboard is AWFUL. Sorry to be so negative and ventilate here, but I find this keyboard to have a very cheap appearance. It's like a keyboard that through usage, all of the letters have worn off. This is supposed to be a brand new, nearly $1500.00 with upgrades computer and it comes essentially with lettering on the keypads like an old, used, and worn out keyboard? Basically, this is a keyboard disaster. Truly amazing how well engineered and designed is the rest of the computer and it's coupled with a keyboard that is this bad. IT'S A DISASTER. Thank you.

UPDATE: I have been using this computer for a couple of weeks now, and although the reviewer in this video gives an accurate review, I unfortunately have to offer a NO BUY RECOMMENDATION. The keyboard and touch pad are just awful. The touch pad has this flimsy, plastic, cheap feeling and plastic-sounding quality to it which is low quality. The keyboard is horrible regarding the lack of contrast between the letters/numbers and the keypad itself. I did all the upgrades on this computer and dropped about $1500.00 on the purchase only to receive a poor quality product. I had a similar HP 17 inch laptop prior from 2012 to 2020 that I got on sale for $800.00 which I love and very high quality and durable but after 8 years of very heavy use and travel was beginning to fall apart. Very disappointed in this replacement HP laptop. Imagine that you purchased an expensive road bike with all of the upgrades, but where you interface with the bike, saddle, handlebar, shifters are very cheap on an otherwise high quality bike and you can imagine what this Envy is like. This is the first, and last, time that I have ever purchased a computer online without holding it in my hands physically first. One test run with this poor quality cheap computer and I NEVER would have purchased it. Every time I use this expensive but cheap quality Envy, which is all of the time at work, I am deeply annoyed with the touch pad, the keyboard and the cheap plastic sound upon clicking. Every time I pick up this computer to use it, the thing pisses me off that I spent so much money on such obviously crappy quality. This is an otherwise quality computer except where you physically interface with it, and there it is a CHEAP DISASTER. Strongly recommend that you DO NOT BUY.
