I’m mad that Morgotts cane isn’t an obtainable weapon. Imagine: L2 gets into a stance, from that R1 throws a mini blade and R2 does the hammer jump on a smaller scale. So much potential there not taken advantage of 😔

The Golem Halberd with the Waves of Darkness Ash of War set to Cold is _INCREDIBLY_ enjoyable. It's been my favourite weapon to run so far, and it deals monstrous damage for Str/Int builds.

      @PierceArner Před 2 lety +6

I've actually always use the Carian Regal Scepter or Azur's Staff in my offhand (depending on how much casting speed matters at your level). That's why Str/Int is so fun, because you can use powerful sorceries like Ranni's Dark Moon & Founding Rain of Stars to just pour down AoE Magic damage all around you, while bashing them to pieces with a huge physical weapon. Plus, Night Comet & Rock Sling will keep you protected at a distance from agile enemies with that same balance of Magic/Physical - or make them close in to a range where you're even MORE dangerous.
Magic-Shrouded & Greenburst Crystal Tears for your Physick let you just be an extremely aggressive powerhouse for 3 mins and keep the enemies staggered or stunned depending on what you're up against, as you just pour out huge damage without worrying about your stamina recovery. The rest of the time, it's really easy for you to dictate the pace of any encounters you have, but especially if you invest a little in equipment for making your build flexible.
I always have a lightweight weapon with Bloodhound's Step Ash of War set to Cold as the secondary weapon my main hand for when I need to gain space to use a flask, or dodge more actively. It also lets you swap to being a super agile Sorcerer if you're taking too much damage up close. My go-to weapons are the Serpent God's Curved Sword or the Sacrificial Axe, because they allow you to recover HP/FP on kills. That sustain is great depending on what you need as you're keeping distance, and also when picking off minor enemies as a way for prepping for bigger brawls without using flasks.
That's paired with the lightweight Silver Mirrorshield as my secondary offhand. That allows me to block a majority of Physical & Magic damage when I'm not casting and in pure melee or when I just need to recover before diving back in. It's also solid to guard-counter with if you're down on FP and need to be up-close.
You can even use both if you need to be faster and use more swift-hitting guard-counters against some enemies that your Colossal Weapon isn't getting to, and as a way to very reliably recover FP/HP without expending any resources, which is ideal in Legacy Dungeons. It makes any weak enemy into a reliable resource with a low risk, and gives you a great option for navigating tight spaces.
For me, that specific versatility is the biggest appeal of the Str/Int focused character build. It lets you do the big magic and big weapons, while Bloodhound's Step & Azur's staff help you make up for having less invested in Dex in dodging & casting, while leaving your Talisman slots free for a ton of different things to boost damage, armor, carrying capacity, etc. that are more likely to change between normal fights and boss fights.
The Fallingstar Beast Jaw is my other go-to primary Colossal weapon because Gravity Bolt is such an incredibly useful tool for staggering high poise enemies super quickly. While Golem Halberd & Waves of Darkness deals with crowds and set to Cold you can proc Frostbite with melee, sometimes the Fallingstar Beast Jaw is more ideal for enemies who stick just outside of that range. Paired with Adula's Moonblade that will handle the frost proc at a slightly longer range, so you can keep the same tactical playstyle as you have with the Cold Golem's Halberd but with a more individual-enemy-focused approach - which is sometimes better for bosses. (The biggest difference is that the Weapon Skill for Waves of Darkness scales better with Int because it's dealing magic damage, whereas Gravity Bolt scales better with Str because it deals physical damage, so how you invest those will make a difference as you level up).
I ended up with this build because the Prisoner is suited to a Str/Int build. Upon teaming up with Ranni & Blaidd, and facing Radahn, I wanted to use Frost to boost damage and specialize in Gravity-type sorceries …but there are very few actual Gravity Sorceries, and the best ones are actually all in the form of Ashes of War or Colossal Weapon Skills.
Halberds are always my preferred weapon and at first I stayed far more magic-focused but kept the similar thrusting weapon style of the Prisoner's starting Estoc by using a Banished Knight's Halberd. Even late-game, that's still a very fun Str/Int option set to Cold and paired with Loretta's Slash Ash of War to instantly proc Frostbite with a more high agility style than the Colossal Weapon approach.
For a long time, I used the Commander's Standard as a primary way to buff sorceries in my offhand and also keep boosted durability. It meant that I maintained a playstyle that was more focused on the Sorceries, and just used the weapons to buff or follow-up. That's a super fun approach to use with Summons because the buff applies to everyone, and bigger encounters feel more like you're the battle Sorcerer leader of a team.
I moved over to the Fallingstar Beast Jaw to have more of a presence up-close and get that "casting Gravity magic from a massive staff" feel that I wanted. It finally let me get back to more towards being the Str/Int solo threat that I'd started as, but it was still not quite there for my idea of an ideal build.
The whole Fallingstar motif with Astel as a Gravity-focused boss at the end of Ranni's questline is what made me hunt down other Colossal Weapons to use Waves of Darkness on and as usual set the Ash to Cold. It was finding the Golem Halberd with it's super quick R2 that _finally_ got me my absolute favourite loadout, especially since I'd been wanting that Halberd weapon since I first saw it up-close when I got warped to Leyndell via the Tower of Return early on.
That whole progression gave me a ton of options to keep using, mixing, and matching, that all still have the same aesthetic focus but give really different advantages as I've been doing NG+ and toying around with different approaches. I just _love_ how many options this game has to let you really focus in and create a build that matches what you want - and in so many different wants.
Videos like this one have been immensely helpful in letting me get a good sense of what options exist, and what things they do. I'm endlessly thankful to all the folks in the community who showcase cool stuff so that it's easier for players like me to focus time around hunting it down and making it match our own style.
Hopefully if anyone else reads this tl;dr, it's got some interesting ideas to try out if you like the same sort of builds that got you to this particular weapon/ash combo.

Waves of Darkness counts as hits so you can actually inflict AoE frost with cold affinity as well as scarlet rot with rotten greataxe or rotten battle hammer, or bleed with omenkiller cleaver or great stars, though the actual ash of war seems to do more damage with greataxes than hammers.

If I might suggest a Golem’s Heavy (or Quality) Halberd with the Stamp (Upward Cut) Ash of War?
The Stomp as you lean in having hyperarmour and almost Endure-level damage reduction just feels great and the R2 follow-up does some absolutely bonkers poise damage. Given that these things are the longest Colossal Weapons, out of those you can buff/infuse, makes it far easier to slam a Boss with one of these things to the face! An alternative to “Upward Cut”, if a slightly more meme-y option, would be Lion’s Claw due to Golem’s Halberd’s extra long and wide hitbox which also has a far smaller “dead zone” in it compared to other colossals with Lion’s Claw.

The only downside to the crescent halberd (and also, the ripple blade), is that farming the crafting materials for the sleep grease is absurdly tedious. The lilies have around a 20% drop rate with a maxed out discovery build, and string has around a 10% drop rate, meaning that you might have enough to craft 100 grease after two hours of nonstop farming. Which sounds like a lot, but isn't at all if you plan to use this as a primary weapon/build for an entire playthrough.

There’s a golem by the crucible knight evergaol in Stormhill that I think is a guaranteed drop for the halberd. I got it on first try and I didn’t loot his body, it just gave it to me like I beat a boss. I could be wrong though, but it’s worth a shot.

Tip (maybe) on the Golem Greatbow: if you're trying for an early drop on the Limgrave Tower Bridge, run past the halberds and kill the archer first. I've done this twice using a Pickled-Silver Fowl Foot and got the drop both times. No matter how many times I tried killing the halberds first, the archer only dropped great arrows.
But hey, I now have 5 Golem Halberds.

Took me 3 hours to get 1 Duelist Greataxe. I'll just use the Rotten one if I wanna power stance, it has a little bit less damage but who cares if it saves me another 3 hours.
That's the only weapon that took that long(might be because the run is pretty long, you only get 2 uses out of a silver foot). In the same time as it took me to get that one weapon I got 2 brandit curved swords, 2 great scythes, 2 executioner greataxes, pest glaive, digger staff, Mt. Gelmir staff and 1 magma curved sword(that took about an hour just by itself).
I miss DS3 farming tools. You had +2 versions of both rings, Avarice helm boosted your item discovery and souls, you had a shield and staff that gave an extra 20% souls each so you could get 110%-120% extra souls Iirc. Here you get one ring and a item you have to farm birds for to get a total of 50% bonus. And weapon drop rates were never this bad before, 0.5% for some? That's like farming proof of concords bad.

OK so this is just a helpful tip for farming all the rare drop weapons in general!
So im farming the magma blades and realised a good trick is to load in from the grave,
Go up the lift into the dark chamber, use a silver pickled fowl foot and kill the 2 magma blade serpent men,
Do a quick close on the game from the console menu so it doesn't save,
It loads you straight into the dark chamber without loosing your pickled fowl foot, rinse and repeat
Should work for farming most rare weapons 🤷🏼‍♂️🤷🏼‍♂️
