ExtremeRate Dawn Remap Kit Review [PS4 Dualshock Controller Mod]

- The ExtremeRate Dawn Remap Kit is a do it yourself modification that adds up to six extra buttons to a standard Dualshock 4.
These extra buttons can be mapped to any of the existing buttons. It can also be installed without any soldering. I choose to do the solder-free install (I can’t solder to save my life) and I’ve spent the past couple of weeks putting it through its paces. While I don’t think this solution will be the right fit for everyone, it occupies a bit of a niche in the market, and I like it quite a bit.
This review doesn’t include how to install this kit, but it will hopefully help you figure out if it’s something you can do yourself.
NB: ExtremeRate sent me this kit for review, however, they have not paid for this video nor have they requested I say anything positive about it.

Witch craft buttons and the feeling of Lego, I'm sold. Bought this month's back, good to see such a high quality review...
Cheers! They have a couple of interesting products coming up so stay tuned as I should be reviewing at least one of them.
I installed mine and love it. Considering that on Amazon, the official attachment costs $80 USD, this $30 mod is amazing
$80!!! I bought mine for $29.99
Hey man I subscribed to your channel after watching your review video for Astro A50 and I went and bought the headset too. You honestly are the best reviewer on CZcams. You cover everything and you sound like a professional. You deserve more subscribers. 👍 Best reviewer ever.
Thanks mate. Glad you're happy with them.
Bro, the gravestone jokes had me dying! 😂 I usually brake shit to realize it wasn’t for me to begin with 😅
I’ve been wanting to get this, and now I definitely will. Awesome review, and you deserve many more subs
Appreciated!
goukigod Adding the funny bits here and there makes the video better than all of the others too
You also don't actually need the double sided tape. If you're soldering it helps a lot, but if you're doing the basics, flip the ribbon cable around. Instead of lining it up to the board, line it up to the connecting cable. The front portion of the controller has pegs that allow the ribbon cable to be lined up without an adhesive. It also makes lining everything up a breeze
Great tip. I'm the paranoid type so decided I would use the tape just incase.
That’s what I definitely need
Great video man. If this has come out a year or two ago, I definitely would've bought it.
I’m guessing you got some kind of pro pad?
@@goukigod no, still rocking the original ds4 from launch. I couldn't justify a $150-200 controller
This vid is so clean tysm
I just installed mine last night and I'm quite surprised with the quality of the product. The disassembly of the controller was the hardest part. The instructions were pretty straight forward and took me about 75 minutes without soldering, but then again I am not tech savvy. I hope that it doesn't break. If it doesn't break, I think it will be an amazing alternative to scuff, battle beaver and cinch.
How is it now? Think of getting this myself bro
@@midnightdragon8812 its excellent. As long as you don't mind not having trigger stops, its perfect. The quality is top notch. No soldering required. If you can manage to take a controller apart, its a super easy install.
@@midnightdragon8812 I've had no issues with it. Can't recommend it enough.
@@LeoTheLion1679 What did you use to cut the metal part of the buttons during installation?
@@LeoTheLion1679 is it still holding up?
Whenever i play fortnite, using the constant build buttons and shooting and jumping, it seems this mod goes haywire. In between jumps or sprints, itll ENGAGE de R2 or L2 buttons. Help?
Sorry, the yellow buttons below the black ones stick out too much of the case?
Is there any inconvenience like pressing the back button in an unwanted situation?
Seeing as you have the white back, on amazon it says "soft touch" Is it a rubberized coating or just a texture like the stock back half has? Rubber coatings have a tendency to go goopy and melt on me within months.
It’s hard to describe but it’s a silky soft surface. Not rubberised. I’ve had a few controllers with the goopy issue and while I haven’t had this long enough to say if it will suffer the same fate, it’s not the same material so there’s a good chance it won’t.
After the installation do you have to do the whole remap button assignment or can you just do that ingame? Like when youre in the games controller configuration settings can you just click the back buttons and those are recognized by the game? Or do you need to do the remap?
After the install, the back buttons aren’t set. You have to assign back buttons to original buttons before you can use it. You basically create a clone of an existing button.
The mod has two methods. It has a remap mode that can be used by holding a button configuration, or a touch portion that can be used instead. At that point you remap, use the same method to exit remapping, and it's done
In your battlefront video I loved it how did you make that animation plz tell
Just photoshop. Nothing fancy, just crossfaded a couple of images together
goukigod thx
I just finished installing mine, wish the dpad worked properly though.
I've had no issues binding to the d-pad. It should work.
So i just instaled the "eXtremeRate remap kit" and i was able to get the button to work and map them correctly. BUT once in a while the buttons would just stop working and then start working again. Is there a problem with the wires? or the tightness of the controller? Can you please help!
Hard to say without seeing your install. One or twice I've accidentally put it into setup mode which stops the buttons working. So just make sure your fingers aren't resting on the setup pressure button
the offical sony backbutton make the controller to bulky for me I struggle with shooting and hitting the backbutton so I hope I wont have that issue with this one
It's definitely a more discrete/streamlined option
I had mine working for months but then I had a few sessions where it took a few minutes for the back buttons to start working, and now the kit is entirely unresponsive. I actually was sent a replacement board and ribbon cable, but that is also completely unresponsive. The controller otherwise is working perfectly, and I know the ribbon cable is lined up correctly. Any ideas what’s going on here?
Without seeing your install I can't really comment. It could be a fault somewhere with the original hardware or with the kit. Seeing as you have the same problem using different kit parts I'd say the fault is probably with the install or controller, but again without seeing it this is just a guess.
@@goukigod Understandable. Id normally agree it’s probably the controller or install and not the kit, but I would think I’d be seeing problems with normal controller use if that was the case. I’m very suspicious of these ribbon cables 🤔
Has anyone had theres for awhile? Is it still reliable?
I used mine for almost 100 hours and saw no noticeable difference in performance. That being said, I just did a review of the new Decade kit, which is only mildly more expensive and I recommend that over this.
Does it work on a fake controller ?
A clone-8310
I don't think so. It only works with specific dualshock 4 variants, so the likelihood it will work with an aftermarket would be next to none.
Hey are the back paddles real responsive on the extreme rate mod kit and can I be little bit agressive pressing them continously @ anyone who can answer I might get these for myself soon.
Sure I haven't ever noticed any latency. Are you asking if they're durable though?
@@goukigod yeah
@@goukigod thanks
@@eppster27 Mine is still going strong. The button modules and custom casing both feel very solid. I can't speak for the componentry inside but it doesn't feel like it will fall apart from regular use any time soon
@@goukigod Also have u ever tried putting together another controller with the same back paddles but instead of a different modchip not the one that comes with the kit
after i installed it correctly my controller won’t turn on
Well then you didn't install it correctly
@@rayaan6070 lol
Installed two this weekend… one of the controllers is remapping everything to L1 though 😂😂. I clipped the touch sensor off of that one. Shouldn’t do that though!!
It’s also a preowned controller from GameStop.
The PS4 one feels like ass
