Amen Funky!! Some black parents are notorious for pushing us to get gov’t jobs, or any job outside of the arts when a lot of us are on the artsy side and would LOVE do something creative. Support artistic endeavors, I say. I wanted to be an actress or a news caster, but my mother shot it down and told me to learn to type so I’ll always have a job. Well, over 30 years later, my azz is still in that field (which is a dying field), I’m miserable and wanna slap my mama each day I sit down at that job! The upside is I’m in acting classes and working on my first professional reel at 53. Better late than never.

To the school “ Black History Month lunches” listen to a story like this before. I’m so tired of people apologizing for the misconception or the mishaps when you exactly what are you doing? There is no excuse there’s no apologies. People are doing things because they want to now good night.

This was on purpose, even if it was a black person.
One of my favorite meals is fried chicken, mac and cheese, cornbread, and watermelon. It is the sweetness of the watermelon combined with the saltiness of the chicken that hits just right for me. Now, this is something I occasionally eat during the summer. However, I would be greatly offended if a white person served this same meal combination to me, and i dont know any other black people that eat the combination together. Furthermore, watermelon is off-season in February. The price has doubled from the summer, and i imagine it is very bitter.
What white people need to do is just stay away from trying to identify a food (because there is none) that black people eat during black history month. The truth of the matter is that no matter what they come up with, it is going to come across as offensive. Why? Because black people are not monolithic. When we were brought over to this country from Africa, we lost our African traditions and adopted the American way of eating. As slaves and out of necessity, sure we ate the parts of the pig and cow that was thrown out by massa, but most black people have never had chitterlings, pigs feet, chicken feet, etc. What we eat is really no different from white people eat. Fried chicken is and always will be offensive to black people because it is a stereotype and not factual.
