Can't believe it's been 34 years since I've seen them
This song was a vibe before vibe was a thing. đ€Łđ€Łđ€Ł Reminds me of high school.
Uh oh... You two are having fun with this one!!! Brad- "You have lips like sugar!!!" đ€Łđ€Łđ€Ł
One of the best vocalists of his generation. I would have suggested "Killing Moon" quite haunting and beautiful.
They did that one already.
Really a great singer. One of the best. His voice seems like Bono's!
@@RandomJane104 That's what I was thinking too. :)
My late brother was a fan!! RIP great song.
Killing Moon is really good,The Puppet was the first song that I saw them do it was live, anyways I liked it well enough to start buying their albums.
Another great band from Liverpool, a hotbed of creativity. Echo & The Bunnymen don't get the recognition they deserve.
I got too see Echo and the bunny men in concert with New Order they were Excellent!!! They were so popular in the 80s..
My favourite band of all time. Though this is their more commercial side. Their early post-punk songs are certainly more unique. Songs like, The Killing Moon, Bring on The Dancing Horses, Seven Seas may lead you into their, IMO, darker, "edgier" stuff, like Ocean Rain, Crocodiles, All That Jazz and much much more. For a group formed in 1978 they are still going. The drummer, Pete De'Freitas, died in a motorbike crash on the 14th June 1989, he would have been 61 years old on the 2nd of August.
In the late '80s, early '90s, my gf (now wife, she was goth, punk) ) and I (was alternative, new wave punk) love Echo and Bunnymen! We have kids now. Always played their music at underground punk, goth clubs we dance to it jaja. See more Echo and Bunnymen videos! They were new wave (darkwave, dark new wave) , post punk, gothic rock, shoegaze/psychedelic. A lot like Clan of Xymox, Sisters of Mercy, The Church, New Order/Joy Division, The Cure, Love and Rockets, Bauhaus (Peter Murphy), Sioxsee and the Banshees.. Also newer bands like The Killers, Bloc Party, Interpol, Arcade Fire are influenced by these groups. You will notice alot of these kinds of bands sings low and slow, deep like Jim Morrison (The Doors), David Bowie, Bono from U2 and others. Part of the style. No Lex goths and punks are not mean, they are some of the nicest and smartest people ever and also very open to all kinds of people, ethnicities, races, and sexual orientations . Just misunderstood, enjoy the dark side, mysterious, complex, exotic, very romantic/passion, surrealism jaja
Great list.. a lot of memories!
This song always triggers a deep nostalgia within me that revolves around all the bars I'd been to because it was played everywhere I went.
1985, Liverpool Royal Court, Bunnymen and Balaam and the angel supporting đđđ„°
In my club days this band was the most.:)
I have always found it ironic that 2 guys with the same first name, Ian McCulloch of Echo and Ian Astbury of The Cult have two of the most under rated voices in rock history.
Honestly I thought this was a deep cut from The Cult the first time I heard it, definitely agreed on them both being underrated
One of the greatest from the 80s
Lex you said âCuts you upâ also a song by Peter Murphy.
Great band - Bring On The Dancing Horses or/and The Cutter!!
Speaking of "Cuts You Up", there's an 80s song by that name, by Peter Murphy, that we will hopefully get to.
Deep is a fantastic album, Cuts You Up is a great song. Also loved A Strange Kind Of Love off the same album.
That came to my mind too when she said goth and cut you up. :)
Sometimes a group's best known songs aren't even close to being their best. This is accessible for the masses, but rather pedestrian in it's composition. If you ever do a deep dive into Echo you may find that they have some of the most unique and stylistic music in the post punk genre.
Any of the first 4 albums are a good place to start.
@@unkindestcut those 4 are definitely my go to albums
Good point. Like Aqualung is far from Jethro Tull's best song.
"Rather pedestrian in its composition"
Some serious thesaurus abuse.
@@adampecsek no, not at all, unless youâre a dunce.
Excellent song and once again Lex nails it. This track is like prime late 80s âgothâ but really itâs alternative pop. Goth kids love echo and their earlier records are much darker and spikier but this record is their attempt at getting a hit. And yes, lots of kids who dress in black are just super romantic and want nothing more than a make out sesh. Check out Siouxsie âpeek a booâ , Depeche Mode âblasphemous rumoursâ or the cure âcharlotte sometimesâ for darker mtv goth stuff. All awesome songs!! Keep it up love you guys!
"Killing Moon" should satisfy your dark Goth obsession Lex.
I first heard this song at a goth club in the 80's. Great song.
So happy you chose one of my favorite groups Echo and the Bunnymen keep going on and they got a lot of great stuff my favorite group from the 80s and youâre right Brad Lex lips are like sugar you lucky dude youâŠ.
Yes Echo and the Bunnymen also investigate around the same time Siouxsie and the banshees thereâs one thatâs called
âThe last beat of my heartâ
Looooooove Echo & The Bunnymen! So many great songs it's kind of a mystery why they were never bigger in the States.
The Cutter, Back of Love, Never Stop, Show of Strength, A Promise, all much better choices from the great EATB catalogue.
Heaven Up Here is the ultimate album for getting their sound.
Dang,Aisa and BJ just did this song on their channel 5 minutes ago.lol,it's weird because this song isn't done a whole lot.ill say the same thing here, I bought this on vinyl long ago, lol.
The whole "Ocean Rain" album is a masterpiece. Reacting to any song on that album would be fantastic, my favorite would have to be "Nocturnal Me".
Hubby's favourite band, though he reckons Porcupine is the better between that and Ocean Rain. Personally, you have to go a long way to beat Heaven Up Here.
Excellent New Wave/Goth group! I love this band. Iâve seen them several times over the decades and they never disappoint! They also do a fantastic cover of The Doors âPeople are Strange.â It was featured in the film âThe Lost Boys.â I turned my 11 year old granddaughter onto this group and she loves them!
That cover led to Ray Manzarek of The Doors playing with them on their song Bedbugs and Ballyhoo
I miss New Wave - but glad that it is the soundtrack to my late high school and early university years
They are definitely NOT GOTH.
@@alanstrom2221 With respect I disagree. I think they initially could be put into the Goth genre but changed their sound just a bit for some commercial success. It doesnât really matter. They all fly under the Alternative banner honestly.
I want to see their reaction to she's in parties by Bauhaus
Major college flashbacks! Love these guys. You may want to check out "Bring on the Dancing Horses." đ„
Never get old! One of my all time favs
One of my fondest concert memories occurred at an Echo and the Bunnymen concert in the mid-eighties at the Tower Theater in Philly. During one of the songs a girl jumped up on stage and made a bee-line for Ian McCulloch, at just the perfect moment he straight arned her and she just went right down. He didn't miss a beat and just carried on with the song. Someone came out and got her off stage, it wasn't mentioned and the show went on...no one else rushed the stage. It was hilarious and very momorable.
Have you watched the Live at Royal Albert Hall concert video from the 80's where he seems basically to be challenging people to the stage? One person does eventually rush up and he elbows them in the stomach without missing a beat. đ
@@RandomJane104 No, I haen't seen that, but I'm going to check it out!
@@rhopsi5620 It happens at about 50 minutes in. I recommend watching the whole concert though because it's among the best professional shot concert videos ever.
There are 2 songs that absolutely exemplify the 80s pop sound: Echo & The Bunnymen's "Lips Like Sugar" and The Cure's "Just Like Heaven". Unfortunately neither were ever really big hits here in the States ("Just Like Heaven" US#40).
You guys gotta do some Bauhaus. Lex will be an instant mega-fan. I suggest âBela Lugosiâs Deadâ, as your foray into Bauhaus.
The Jesus And Mary Chain, are also another band that I recommended. They are similar in sound to Echo & The Bunnymen. I recommend their song âJust Like Honeyâ.
Will S is a guitar phenom. One of the best to come out of that era.
Agreed, but I have to say I love Les' bass grooves more.
đđŒđđŒ
"Lips Like Sugar" (1987) got a lot of radio play on the alt-rock stations back when, along with "Bring On the Dancing Horses" (1985), but I'm more partial to their earlier songs, "The Killing Moon" (1984), and "Never Stop (Discotheque)", "Rescue", "The Cutter", "The Back of Love", and "Do It Clean (live)" from their 1983 EP that today is called The Sound of Echo.
One of my faves from the 80's along with The Cure. Killing Moon is still at the top for me. Bring On The Dancing Horses, The Cutter, Nocturnal Me, Seven Seas and Bedbugs & Ballyhoo are just a few to check out. Lex has been swotting those genres. âïž
This is in my list of top 10 of all time songs! This song is just incredible and comes from an incredible ERA of groups and songs that I still listen to 30 years later. Thanks for the Great Reaction! Cheers!
Ha ha "Pickle Lips"....... "The Killing Moon" or "Bring on the dancing horses" are great songs by this band.....I don't think they regarded themselves as a "Goth" band but they did get labelled with that genre at the time in the 80's.....great reaction guys thanks.
You guys are such a sweet and beautiful couple. The Good Lord really blessed you two đâ€ïž
Such a bad ass song! I remember when this was a new song too. Still kicks ass.
I miss New Wave - but glad that it is the soundtrack to my late high school and early university years
If you want more Echo and the Bunnymen, try âBring On The Dancing Horses.â
This
The Cutter, that rocks
EVERYTHING from the first 4 albums (and epâs).
New Direction has a killer guitar solo.
Over the Wall. The best!
New Genre: Background Music!!!
"The Cutter" - their best song IMO.
Second that
We were called Mods' back in the day.
And it was all about moods...
That was my day.
Guys. Another example of post Punk Rock Britain. Fantastic band. And they had a great sound.
Great song!!! One of the 80s most underrated bands in my opinion...so many awesome songs...The Cutter, Never Stop, The Killing Moon, Seven Seas, Rescue...please do more!!
So good! The Cutter is a great song from them too, theyre all good!
What Neal said. "Nocturne Me". Cool choice y'all.
My dude couldn't decide if he wanted to sound like David Bowie or Robert Smith. Either way, the production on this record bangs. Sounds like it was recorded yesterday.
Also giving off Peter Murphy vibes.
@@nitegoat1369 Yeah, that too
He was compared most often to Jim Morrison.
@@rich_t Really? I guess I blocked that nugget out. I suppose that was the UK's judgment (?). Observing all these years later, I would say that this guy didn't have enough c*ck in the rock, as we used to say. To his great credit, he doesn't come off nearly as pretentious as Morrison did
I hear bono
I just need to praise Brad for saying he always thought Lexâs lips were like sugar. Yay, Brad! I think Lex was touched.
Sort of borderline goth/pop - but loved by Goths. Great band with some fantastic songs. Try "Seven Seas", "Bring on the Dancing Horses", or "Rescue". If you want something which is closer to the darker side of 80s goth, try The Sisters of Mercy's song "This Corrosion".
Lex gets it! Lot of gothic related music, culture (especially the older....'70s, '80s, '90s, early '00s) has a lot of unique romance/love, passionate, mysteriousness, dark romanticism, darker/mellow, moody, melancholy (happy/sad) feels, vibe, style.
Goth punk/rock came from punk/punk rock. You then have related subgenres like darkwave (dark new wave), New Romantic, etc.
They were alternative/Indie, new wave (darkwave)! Gothic rock/post-punk group. shoegaze/psychedelic rock from the UK. The shoegazy (fuzzy pedal, amps effects, ethereal sounding) guitars is what yall are hearing. They play their songs at underground night clubs. They are from the UK. Was only shown at night time, Cutting Edge show and Alternative Nation on MTV for alternative music. And 120 Minutes, similar show on MTV. And on college/underground/alternative radio stations. This group was during the late '70s, '80s and early '90s.
The talk singing style is common in post-punk, new wave. Its' similar to another new wave/post-punk band U2 (Bono), David Bowie, The Doors (Morrison....Echo and the Bunnymen were influenced by them), Psychedelic Furs (new wave/post-punk) , Simple Minds (new wave), Talking Heads (new wave, post-punk), The Cars (new wave, post-punk), and others.
See more of Echo and The Bunnymen videos/songs "Heads Will Roll", "The Cutter", "Lips like Sugar", "Show of Strength", "Nothing Lasts Forever", " Bringing on the Dancing Horses", etc
They were inspired by Velvet Underground (proto-punk group), Roxy Music, David Bowie, The Doors and others.
Similar groups to them are Psychedelic Furs, Killing Joke, Sioxsee and the Banshees, The Smiths, The Cure, Sisters of Mercy, Bauhaus, Clan of Xymox, Joy Division, The Cult (early stuff), The Church, The Chameleons, The The, Coldplay, Interpol, Arcade Fire, The Killers, Flaming Lips, Modern English, early U2 , and others.
Yall need to do another new wave/post-punk stream.
The Cutter is their best song đ”
It so is âŠgenius
I'm with Brad on this one. Your lips are perfect for your face - complement your adorable fun & slightly mischievous persona. PLEASE don't ever go down the plastic enhancement route - not for a moment that I think you would, you're far too grounded. Keep rocking youse guys.
The song New Direction is a must if you like this (even if you don't). It's so unmistakable 80's New Wave/Alternative. Iknow....cause I was there!
Seen this band live tons of times, they sound exactly the same live as on record...true talent. :) plus..Brad...way to low key add in the romantic chivalry.....well played.
I miss New Wave - but glad that it is the soundtrack to my late high school and early university years
This is top 40 Echo. You want to listen to the dark Echo , anything from the Heaven Up Here album. Try â Over the Wallâ.
Zimbo Zimbo Zimbo Zimbo Zimbo Zimbo Zimbo Zimbo Zimbo Zimbo.... A Promise too. Hell, why stop there, all of that album is great.
try their 90's song - nothing lasts forever great tune!
đ° Great new wave, gothic/darkwave, post-punk, alternative band of the '80s and early '90s. They reminded me of U2, Psychedelic Furs, The Doors, Tears for Fear, Depeche Mode, The Cure, Joy Division/New Order, Siouxee and the Banshees, Clan of Xymox, etc. Influenced modern bands like Interpol, Coldplay, The Killers, etc. đ đ đ
Check out their cover of The Doorâs âPeople Are Strange.â One of their best.
i remember this guy who thought the chorus was "lips like chicken, chicken kisses!"
One of the best example of Brazilian gothic scene in Brazil...
My favourite Bunnymen track is rare, recorded live and called "Broke my neck" đ
Obviously when they tried pop in the case of "Lips Like Sugar" it came out as superior pop with deep overtones. But "Broke My Neck" along with "Fuel" "No Dark Things" and "In Bluer Skies" are examples of the real power of this band. The Noel burke era Bunnymen also has some really deep and powerful songs such as Lady Don't Fall Backwards and the awesome "Flaming Red." The critics will hate me saying this, but they had two great singers. Just another example of how this band had a rhythm section and lead guitarist the equal of Ian's phenomenal talent.
@@trevorloughlin1492 don't forget Ian's solo effort and album. Nothing ever lasts forever and in bloom alongside other fantastic songs đđđ
Love love love Echo and the Bunnymen
This is one of the best post-punk UK bands... for two other great 80's UK bands like this, try the song "Never Understand" by a group called the "Jesus & Mary Chain", and the song "Enola Gay" by a group called "Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark", and for a great 80's American band like this, try a song called "Carry Home" by a group called "Gun Club"
I love âNever Understandâ. Wrapped up in all that feedback, is a nice tune, great melody. Much like JAMC singles that were released during the 80s and early 90s. Them, The Bunnymen, The Cure, Joy Division and a host of other English bands were leagues ahead of most groups here in the U.S. (during that period, in my opinion).
@@FuzeMuzik if you aren't familiar with it i suggest you check out Gun Club's album "Miami"
Great band with a great sound.
The Cutter and Never Stop.
You need to add "The Killing Moon" and "Bring On The Dancing Horses" to your Echo reaction list đ
Agreed! Also The Cutter", too. đž They already done "Killing Moon " awhile back tho.
Bedbugs & Ballyhoo!!!
Also "Bedbugs & Ballyhoo"
Finally!! Obsessed with this one! Now you need to listen to OMD's "So in Love"...So groovy..
Yeah! Lex would really dig âSo in Love.â As she put it during this reaction - âitâs a vibe.â
We have such good taste!
A MUST HEAR Classic,, The Icicle Works "Birds Fly" (Whisper To A Scream)..(Official Music Video)
Man this brings back memories. đ„č
A solid band. Excellent discography.
Amazing!!! This song is fantastic! Good choice guys!!!!
Yes! Echo and the Bunnymen were a vital part of my college soundtrack. Please react to my favorite song âDo It Cleanâ
Specifically the live version from Royal Albert Hall. Insane.
Always loved this song! And I was too old to be "goth" in the '80s, but it's just a good song.
This song is ok. I prefer their earlier post-punk stuff but I'm glad you got back to them.
They were amazing live back in the day.
I do love Tears For Fears too. Good call!
80's New Wave đ€
"Villiers Terrace" is another great song from this group.
That was a nice compliment to give Brad, good on you
Great band! Great song!
You should listen to their cover of The Doors song People are Strange which was featured in the 1987 movie The Lost Boys. Plus listen to lead singer Ian McCulloch solo song Lover, Lover, Lover.
Fantastic band, grew up on these, bring on the dancing horses or killing moon would be good for you.
Oh, you must do a reaction for their "Seven Seas" or "A Promise." Hugely influential band.
Great early alternative 80âs track. If you guys take requests, how about âPureâ by the Lightning Seeds? Same sort of vibe!
This was actually their later '80s stuff, great new wave, gothic/darkwave, post-punk, alternative band of the '80s and early '90s. They reminded me of U2, Psychedelic Furs, The Doors, Tears for Fear, Depeche Mode, The Cure, Joy Division/New Order, Siouxee and the Banshees, Clan of Xynox, etc. Influenced modern bands like Interpol, Coldplay, The Killers, etc. đ đ đ
Man, the freaking Lightning Seeds seem so forgotten and underappreciated to me. They had a lot of great songs with "Pure", "Sense", "Life of Riley", "Joy" and especially "Thinking Up Looking Down" being just a few. Good call Neil đ.
loved this when it came out back in the day...
Another great 80s banger. Love this song.
So happy you liked this song!
Heaven Up Here, by far their best album. Over The Wall tremendous.
Back in the day we just called it "Alternative Music"
Echo had some Doors vibes mixed with Jesus And Mary Chain.
"Nothing last forever" is a better song from these guys
Thanks for the great reaction. This has always been one of my favorites.
So good to see a reaction to this band, they were huge in the UK, I'd love to see you react to ''The Back of Love' Villiers Terrace' 'A Promise' and 'Silver' at some point if you are going to do more from them, thanks.
Peter Murphy "Cuts You Up" & "A Strange Kind Of Love" (Both Official Music Videos)
Great band. Thought this song would hit the charts present day after Euphoria used this song. Very 80s
This Classic Will Hit You Different,,
Timbuk 3 "Life Is Hard" (Official Music Video A MUST!!)
Thank you for playing.†Love this jam. Some people may call it Goth, Dark Wave ( darker new wave) So cool to see your reactions.
An absolutely excellent band!!! â€ïž
Just call it post-punk and anyone around during the 80s will know what you mean.
I'd suggest you give Bombers Bay a listen. In my opinion, it's their best song.
Next Echo & The B Reaction NEEDS to be THE CUTTER! #banger
The killing Moon is a fantastic song.
I love shoegaze. LOVE IT.
