- Ed Unicycles New Zealand [Ep.2]
Riding up through the South Island I continue my worldwide search for the best campsite, find dozens of bras by the side of the road and meet Nick and Jan, a lovely couple that decided to drive 800km to meet me. Amazing!

Hi Ed, Jan and I enjoyed the video. We are both very pleased you rode through New Zealand safely. And wish you very well for the remainder of your around the world journey.
"if you're dead, you didn't make it. Did ya?"
Well, he's not wrong.
Great videos. Keep it up mate
It still baffles me why you only have 28k subscribers. You should have at least 500k, at least.. Love the content, how can anyone not like Ed?! So humble!
Beats my understanding as well...
200k now after 2 years and growing!
What an ending! The suspense!
Thanks for the new video Ed,,, you are though as nailsall the best to you, waiting for pt 2..
The suspense !!! Your getting good at this ,Safe journey Ed
ED love your videos! I wish I had recorded the gracious people that had hosted me during my bike tour. I think I felt insecure recording them, but i love the people you meet on your trip!!! They are as much as part of it as the amazing scenery.
I didn't expect that you'd have many difficulties riding through NZ. But the bloody sandflies and the dangerous road without shoulders... Good to know you got safely through NZ! Great views and excellent video as always.
Took me a couple of searches, of course new to the whole You Tube commenting. Think I commented on the first couple of videos I ever saw. I think its great, of course I just subscribed and believe I am starting to watch the first of your videos. I absolutely admire what your doing. At the age of 24 I Unicycled Australia, well mostly backpacked in a Holden kingswood. But the travel was certainly there ! If only I was young again , LOL g'd on ya mate!
Loving your videos, Ed - the good, the bad and the itchy... I'm on the edge of my seat to find out what happens next here.
I wish I had known about this amazing adventure of yours earlier on during our Honolulu layover - I would have had so many questions... The card-playing was fun, in any case! Hope you're enjoying your US leg.
Can't wait to see the next one. It's looking great!
It was sweet of you to end the video with a still of the nice couple who treated you to dinner.👍🏻
This is my favorite youtube channel by far! Keep it up, Ed!
Great to see you Ed! Be safe!
Ohhh that ending, just finished watching! Can't wait to see the next video
always great to see you post new videos!
Nice one Nick and Jan. Brilliant effort.
:-)
Great video yet again Ed. Perfect time to watch it. Just before i go and film my unicycle ride. Would love to meet up in the UK to finish your ride with you
Ahhh! Don’t leave us hanging like that!! Haha- another great video!
Beautiful video ed!
i cant stop watching ...awesome and inspirational
haha love the cliff hanger. if only he knew that you've cycled on roads at least a million times more dangerous! Nathan & Frances in Waikawa.
Very coooool video Ed !!!!!!!!!!!!!
That's amazing. I wish I was more of a "people person" sometimes.
I really need to visit New Zealand sometime. What a beautiful place.
THAT CLIFFHANGER, AHHH
Hey man the only way to get to be a people person is to get out and talk, practice makes perfect! It's not easy but you got this :) wish you all the best
Stunning landscapes! I’m definitely gonna start saving for NZ! You’re looking so well Ed! What an amazing adventure you’ve taking us on! I’m not quite sure what we’re going to do with ourselves when you get home! Those sand flies though! You’ve had a few battles with the bugs along the way! You still learning to play the harmonica? X
Great edit Ed, has left me in suspense now waiting to see what happens with the safety enforcers, cheers
I love the style of ed's videos! 😃
Asking to speak to the manager, nice one haha. Keen to see what happens next. Great video as always.
Hi Ed! Your videos are amazing. I can see how much effort you put into each of them. Great shooting and great editing! Keep up the great work and be safe!
Agreed. Edit at 0:46 is Hollywood quality.
Amazing Ed 👊🏻☺️
It wasn't that long ago that I was binge watching Ed through Europe, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, China - then I caught up. Then there was waiting. Now... CLIFFHANGERS! Torture, Ed... Torture!
Keep living live to the full Ed.
Awesome vids! Good job
Nick & Jan you’re awesome, amazing couple!
You do not have enough subs man you are awesome you deserve 21 million dude love your videos you keep doing you man love it
When will you be posting the US route. I'd love to come and meet you if you're coming within a couple hours of my city.
Great song choice!
I just wish I had the endurance that you have... Ride 4 times a week 100 kms in total, hope to start doing more soon!
Nice one Ed
I love the cliff hanger :-)
Well done mate! I wish I had the guts to do sth like this
Man, how I miss these videos :3 😂
Good video, wonder what happens next
You should have more structure on your titles in my opinion. E.g. Ed Unicycles New Zealand [Ep.2]: They drove 10 HOURS to meet me!. Or simply: Ed Unicycles New Zealand [Ep.2]. It makes your channel more orderly and easy to understand, and it makes it easier for new viewers to find your videoes. Just my thoughts, keep up the good work!
YstenID - But it makes people think they have to watch from the beginning or see things in order. You can really just pick up anywhere in this series
You're a back seat driver aren't you?
i'm glad you didn't camp within the stream bed since large gravel like that only gets picked up and deposited downstream with fast flowing water so with the stream bed looking like that i'd think that it was likely subject to flash flood conditions
Yey! New Video! Greetings from the Philippines!!!
yoU LIKE??
MR Philippines
ED IS STILL ALIVE !!
6 months visa! Keen to get all of the NZ videos edited before I tackle the US
THAT cliffhanger!
aahh cliff hanger!! hope you're doing well!!
Yikes! I am on edge to see how this turns out!
West coast sandflies... the stuff of legend. Work out a recipe with them and you never have to carry food.
wheres the next video dude!?
Just a heads up - David Mumford has the song You Ain't Going Nowhere on a Creative Commons license at Free Music Archive, but it was written by Bob Dylan.
Cheers Midtown. Does that mean I can't use that particular song?
That song's not on the Free Music Archive any more. The only stuff I've got on there now is my own. Didn't realise I wasn't allowed to upload covers to that site!
Beautiful intro. Bizarre Nursery rhyme finger pickin guitar song.
Nice way to keep us in suspense! I guess you didn't have any bug repellent for that leg of your journey. We'll see if you ended up bribing those guys so you could walk? That ending, being stopped by people concerned for your safety, reminded me of the time that I was hitchhiking across the United States from the east coast to the West Coast and doing backpacking in the Pacific Northwest. I wanted to cross into Canada to continue my backpacking in the Canadian Rockies, but they demanded I present them a certain dollar amount for every day that I intended to stay in the country. I was really pissed off because there's no way I ever needed as much money as they said I should have. They turned me around and sent me back to the United States and I ended up spending the night in the back of a motorboat that was dry docked near Blaine, WA, USA. The next day I hitchhiked to Port Angeles Washington so I could take the ferry to Victoria British Columbia. I had to tell them I was going for one day and going back on the ferry like all the rest of the tourists. Without too much delay my trip continued in the Canadian Rockies with my backpack :-)
Nice anecdote. There's always a way...if you're stubborn
Ed Pratt Yaay! I finally get to hear a response from you I Ed! that's been following all your videos for quite some time and really appreciate seeing what you're doing and the effort that you put into filming yourself to create the whole creative video perspective about what you're doing. It's rumored that you're now in San Francisco USA. True?. If you'd like to meet/have a place to stay in San Diego please let me know.
They wanted $? I work closely with CBSA ( Canada Border Services ) and have never heard of them demanding $. Trust me when I say that's not Canadian policy.
D G Roberts Perhaps you misunderstood what I meant (because of my sarcastic reference to Ed needing to bribe of the New Zealand Highway employees)... in my real situation, the Canadian government border employees insisted I "present" them with money so they could verify I had it in my possession, but they claimed it was intended to demonstrate my ability to care for myself during my travels. I believe their rationale was that if I had the sum of cash they expected, I would not become a liability to the government during my travels. In reality, I don't believe one could ever carry enough money in the case of bodily injury that could cost millions of dollars. However at the time, I was carrying a checkbook for my banking account with ample balance that satisfied their requirements and I offered to have them verify that by contacting my bank. I also had the ability to wire money to a bank if necessary. Furthermore I'm certain many people that own cars and drive them across the border for their visit don't carry the amount of cash that was expected of me. In hindsight I'm curious if this was a valid policy (circa 1982) they were trying to uphold or they just looked at me as some kind of vagrant traveling into their Nation just because I didn't have a car?
Hey Ed. If you come through New Plymouth, Taranaki hit me up for a good meal and a comfy bed! I will let you camp in my yard if you ask nicely :). Love your work mate. Safe Travels.
These videos are shot far back in time, hes done with NZ and on his way to the USA. Check out his facebook, its way more up to date on where he is :)
Leone:Ah, I am not on Facebook! Thanks for letting me know.
Woheee, Cliffhanger :P
Is that Banna in avenger who gave you meal?
New Book: 'How to lure an around-the-world unicyclist to dinner' :)
You to construction superintendent: OK, you get your assistant to escort me through the dangerous-for-cyclists detour you've implemented - and I won't phone the national tourism bureau. :)
Wait until they go home at the end of the day then go through.
Tricky ending Ed. I can see both sides of the argument. Hope it turned out ok.
That is called Middle Earth Mosqiuto!
Gooo ed
Geez they could have shared their room with you!!! I would have... to drive 10 hours to meet you and not offer that was weird
Sandflies here in New Zealand, love fresh meat.
Ware the wild pigs, can be nasty, may attack and would be like crocs. (moot point likely)
If you have a chance do bit of trout fishing Worlds largest bank fishable possibly.
Safe Journeys
Dude, firstly Safety First, secondly 0:45 you scarred the shit outta me!.
Damn sandflies!
Just get in dude. It's only a few KM and your safety is worth it.
He can't. If he does that, then he doesn't get the record.
@7:13 used to live in murchison when i was there for a year doing a working holiday
great memories!
That guy just doesn't understand haha. But he was just worried about you
health and safety. Required by law
but he maybe walked on a side track nearby or thu the bush
madhouse5213 I would have
Buy a net for your head Ed 😂
The bras are likely to do with the Free the Nipple movement, I remember seeing the same thing in Iceland. It's a great movement!
These has to be some kind of detour, there always is. Accepting a ride... It's just, wrong at this point. Although, Ed would probably already have solved that by now.
You really really need to pack bug repellent.
Brruuuaaahhhh
Ah, I see you found Rapey McSerialKiller's famous bra ranch
They drove only 5 hours to meet you. It's their fault they decided not to unicycle back
Brah
If you came across a guy for the first time and he told you, “I have been riding my unicycle around the world for 2.5 years,” would you take a moment to let that sink in? What I see here are guys who are just doing their job - the kind that make this world so much less interesting. 🤦🏾♂️
general comment, must be a pain constantley setting up camera and THEN going back to pick it up
Otherwise absolutley amazing
When you getting to San Francisco? I'll bring you candy.
I thought he was still in Cape Reinga.
Thanks
Yes, light is right, I'm in SF, but won't be leaving for about a week. Cheers Claire. I'll be setting an official leaving date soon.
What's your favorite candy then?
You took a train to Hong Kong
Indeed, but not to make progress. I took the same train back to the Lanzhou to continue the ride from where I left off
Sorry pal, I didn't see that video and to think I was so self-righteous 21 minutes ago. I watched your film at the adventure film show a few weeks ago and was mightily impressed. An inspiration for travel and film making.
Bra bra bra bra bra bra ann.......
Bruh
If they'd know where you had been and which roads you travelled, I guess they would see how stupid that was.
BRUH
come on bra-h 😂😂😂😂
I'm getting the impression that New Zealanders aren't the "happy, go lucky, free-spirited" people we may believe them to be. A jerk homeowner tells you "no water!," then a landowner kicks you off, and now the traffic division has no appreciation for your situation. (Granted, they're trying to keep you from BEING KILLED. And the whole mess is due to a national disaster that closed one of their main roads.) But not really the reception I would have expected.
So caveat emptor I guess!
tattered bra, brah, bruh... bruh bruh
by yourself a netting to cover your face. Hope to see you on the other side of the section, offcourse!!!
Rick Overdijk he shoulda had netting as standard equipment since his experience with mosquitoes in China. Kids never learn 😄
11:17 To Be Continued.. yes after 2 decades.. 😕🙁
NZ roads are v dangerous! Lost count of the white crosses on the side of the road
oh god its borris johnson
Dude, dead is dead and there will be no further fund raising if your dead! There has to be wiggle room for things that could kill you mate!!!
If they're that worried they could escort him through, driving slowly just ahead of him.
Dave Kahn hopefully we will see that they worked with him and that he stayed safe.
@@DaveKahn I think they did the right thing though, slow the traffic down for Ed by being at the rear make perfect sense. If they were to escort him at the front Ed might have been hit!
Honestly . . . such jerks. If you are walking off the road then you aren't at risk. Maybe they could transport the unicycle through so you can walk through the bush adjacent to the road? Or at least one of them could have got a map out and tried to work out a way round.
Alastair Dent the guy said it was a narrow road with no shoulder and lots of blind corners. Walking would be just as dangerous as unicycling. I understand it being annoying but it does genuinely sound too dangerous for him to be riding on that road. It's easy for you to complain but if you were responsible for the safety of people on that road you'd have a different attitude. Sounds like the best move is to try and find an alternate route
Alastair Dent - They're just doing their job. Could have been a bit nicer, but they have good intentions
I think they acutally doing a really job! They even follow him
(after he politely refused) to try and keep him safe for the a bit. I would be say that both sides are amazing! I👍🏽 for both.
Bruh 6:04
pls more asian country
This kid has been riding his unicycle around the world in places more dangerous than this, don't teach Ed about safety, he knows better than you!
