Cheers Nate and Fran for a fantastically spontaneous evening!

I just wanted to clarify a few points that I didn't discuss fully in this video. First off I have absolute no problem with how the road crew dealt with the situation. In fact I think they handled it very well by telling me the facts and presenting me a "safe" option for traversing that 7km section.
Short of riding back on myself 400miles there was not alternate route.
What I stated as "the rule" for cycling around the world with an unbroken line is really just my rule. When I set out 2.5years ago on this unicycle excursion I intended to travel under my own power (while on land - no swimming on this trip!) for the eternity of the ride. So far I have managed just that and as a result the pressure not to break the unbroken line has grown.
I doubt my 'circumnavigation around the world by unicycle' attempt will ever be official. Guinness have some pretty strict rules and the big one I've already broken multiple times is that I can't stop moving for more that 14days. So this isn't about me not wanting to break official rules to get the official record, but rather not wanting skip a section, break my rules and lose motivation for the trip. Because what, after taking this first ride, is there to stop me from just hitching up the next mountain pass or into that next city?
I've found that not even giving myself the option of skipping a section weirdly makes the trip easier. Ceirtainly not physically but mentally. I've already accepted that I'm unicycling the whole way, so when I'm knackered climbing a mountain pass and someone in a car pulls up and offers me a ride to the top, I don't have to have that mental battle with myself whether or not to accept it. Does that make sense?
Did I put the importance of the trip over my own life in this video? Perhaps. But not wanting to sound arrogant I've had plenty of experience of riding much sketchier roads and I personally didn't think that this one felt all that dangerous.
I'm raising funds and awareness for 'School in a Bag'. Find out more:

Wow, Frank was genuinely concerned about your well being, what a good man. Usually these types of guys just don't want to be held responsible but he looks like he actually cared.

I think it's important to ride on these "dangerous" roads if that's what you want to do, because it also normalises the idea that people can and will cycle everywhere. Otherwise, dangerous roads will stay dangerous forever and it will be seen as a cyclist's folly to go there rather than every road user's responsibility to drive safely.

Cool guy. - I commute daily with my bike to work. Being careful is a useless comment, because I can't do anything if a car decide to roll over me.... It is what it is...

Getting the vehicle to trail you like that was the obvious compromise - well done!

Typical road worker. I’m a retired Australian Civil Engineer with decades of experience dealing in safety issues with this industry. Many of them hated cyclists with a passion, which I could never understand. When questioned at courses I ran, most of them admitted to riding bikes in their childhood on public roads. Go figure that out!

  • @gingerelvis

Respect for not taking no as an answer! You've done much more "dangerous" things on your travels and you are clearly fully aware of the risks that you take. I'm a motorcyclist and I reckon they wouldn't have stopped me on the bike, the dangers are similar. Stick to your guns and calculate your own risks, obviously a bit of local knowledge never goes a miss insurance and risk assessments often get in the way of adventure.

You´re such an inspiration not just by what you´re currently doing right now, but also by how you approach and treat other people. I initially reacted with anger towards the way that road worker spoke to you and I first expected you to have a row with him, but you surprised me by shaking hands, asking him for his name and thanking him for his concern for your health. You´re a great person and would be a great diplomat!

One of the great gifts of your epic is that you are able to demonstrate the great goodness of most of the people around the world. It is a valuable lesson. And we need to learn it over and over again. Thanks for being the good person that your are. All of us out here benefit from it.

Hi Ed. I don't think the question should be "is cycling around the world worth your life" I think it should be " How many lives are you helping by cycling around the world" ! Awesome stuff mate! Don't give up!
