    It wasn't "people" that healed Joel. Not Tess, or Tommy. It was Ellie. Notice how the camera lingers on their faces. He holds eye contact so she understands he's talking about her. You can see the moment she gets it. That scene was sooo meaningful. Felt like missing "baby girl" again. 😂 But I love you guys. Your enthusiasm is really fun.

    I think you guys have nailed it -- Ellie would absolutely have chosen to be sacrificed if her sacrifice would give meaning to the deaths of the people she cared about. Even if it's only a chance. But Marlene was too afraid that she would refuse, so she didn't ask, which gave Joel an excuse to "rescue" Ellie. And Joel was also too afraid to tell her the truth, because he KNEW that Ellie would have chosen to be sacrificed, so he couldn't afford to let her know that -- he had to lie and pretend that there's lots of other kids like her so the Fireflies already know that her sacrifice wouldn't help. It's just an excuse, though. To be honest, if Marlene had asked, if Ellie herself had gotten to talk to Joel, even if they knew 100% that her sacrifice would result in a cure... I believe Joel wouldn't have been able to let her go. She had become everything to him. There was no other choice for him but to save her; he wasn't going to let another daughter die for some abstract concept like a cure.
    Ellie is a child, caught in between two people who put their own agendas above her choice, and she's the one who has to live with the consequences of the choices THEY made. On some level, she seems to know that he's not telling the truth... but she has to force herself to accept his answer, because he's the only person she has left, and if he's lying, then Riley and Tess and Sam and everyone else died "for nothing".
    The tragedy and the morality of the ending is fascinating. A+ game, A+ show.

    This is such an amazing series, some of the best performances of the last few years 👌🏻 ah, with the “cover her ears” thing; it wasn’t just out of principle or trying to alleviate any trauma, but also for physical safety - she’s a newborn, a gunshot could damage her eardrums (Can also damage adult eardrums too, especially over time, which is why Joel has bad hearing in one ear).
    Ellie isn’t really crazy or ‘psycho’, she’s just angry and hardened by her environment. She’s actually responding pretty normally to the world that she was born into. She never got to see the world as it was before the outbreak, she was born into violence and danger and trauma, so she’s responding pretty accordingly 😂 and she of course hates the outbreak and the infected for what it’s done to the people that she loves, and so killing that trapped infected in the earlier episode was just her taking that out on an easy target. And maybe some morbid curiosity, as it’s probably pretty rare that she would have gotten to see a live infected that close perhaps…
    Loving your reactions guys, your enthusiasm and investment into the story and the characters is amazing and so endearing! Keep up the amazing work guys, it’s so appreciated! 🎉 thank you both! xxx

    I loved rewatching the show again with you guys. To answer a question you brought up: both Ellie's actors have said that Ellie would 100% choose to die for the chance of a cure. Joel knew that and couldn't let her have that choice because he was not going to lose her. The showrunner Craig Mazin was adamant that the show copy the ending of the game (from the elevator on) exactly. There are comparison videos on IGN's channel that show side-by-side scenes from the game and show, I highly recommend now that you've finished!
    Also, that giraffe was real (shots were filmed in his pen in our zoo), people can visit and feed Nabo themselves!

    That ending is perfect. It was the top thing I was desperate for the show to keep from the game, and it's worth pointing out that back in the day it wasn't just a cliffhanger, game fans didn't know there would be a Part 2 until years later, this was just how it ended. Personally I love Part 2 even more, but Part 1 could've ended there and still been great.
    On the Fireflies, the ironic thing is if they had just asked Ellie I'm absolutely sure none of this would've happened. Joel would not have openly defied Ellie's wishes and the Fireflies would have their cure, but to ask you have to be willingly to take no for an answer, and the Fireflies aren't. They're not going to let the cure for mankind walk out the door to be torn apart by clickers, murdered by raiders, or live to the ripe old age of 83 while the rest of humanity goes extinct.
    If anything their mistake was not being manipulative enough to ask her, hoping to gain her consent but do the surgery no matter what, or ruthless enough to kill Joel before he could interfere.

    People tend to also assume the supposed "cure" would have been successful. The forget that Ellie would have been there for only an hour or so before rushing her into brain surgery to try and get stuff to then create an unprecedented cure/vaccine. All done in a worn down hospital with equipment that has most likely barely been taken care of for 20 years.
    This being done when you have 2 experts, that studied and practiced in a non-apocalyptic world say this thing does not exist, and is not possible. Yet a doctor working in much worse conditions, with far fewer resources is supposed to be able to do this thing with only an hour to examine Ellie? That quickly you are going to jump to life ending brain surgery? Ending the life of the only known person with an immunity? You are going to risk all of that, that quickly? It just seems foolish to me, to think anything about the way the fireflies handled it was correct.

    • @ZizouZico
      @ZizouZico Před 6 měsíci +3

      Exactly. Plus there’s no way the fireflies had the resources to manufacture and distribute a drug. Just think about the resources that multinational multibillion dollar pharma corps today need to develop new drugs. And that’s with whole campuses of world class research facilities and small armies of specialized researchers.
      Also don’t think Ellie could really be asked to choose. She’s clearly depressed and traumatized. And she’s a 14 yo kid. You can’t really ask a traumatized child if she’s willing to give her life to supposedly save the world.

    Throughout the whole story, they made a point of showing different ways that people can love each other. Joel and Tess, where Tess knew that Ellie would be a real cure and sacrifices herself for the greater good of mankind. Bill and Frank, where Bill not only chooses honour Frank's wishes and kill the love of his life, but also decides to go out with him. Sam and Henry, where Henry sacrifices Sam for Ellie, and then feels compelled to kill himself when his purpose is now gone. Kathleen, who takes her rage out on anyone she can for the murder of the brother she loved. Riley and Ellie, who decide to just let luck decide what happens next and lose their minds together. Ellie's mom, who lied to Marleen about when she cut the cord in the hopes of saving her baby. All of these stories show how love can be selfish or selfless. All of these people lost someone that gave their life purpose. Unlike Ellie's mom, Joel decided to lie to protect himself from more loss. His was a selfish love. He more or less chose to doom the planet for his love. Ellie's purpose was to save the world, and Joel chose to take that from her so that he could continue to have a purpose. Obviously, the Fireflies should have given Ellie the choice, but Ellie would have sacrificed herself for this cure. In the scene before, she made a point of saying 'There is no half-way with this' and 'After everything I've done, it can't be for nothing.' Then at the end, she made a point of listing all of the good people that were sacrificed to get her to that hospital. Riley, Tess, Sam... because Joel couldn't bear to lose his purpose, they all died for nothing. A lot of it boils down to what Frank said: "Do you love me? Then love me like I want you to" and "Paying attention to things, that's how we show love". Ellie wanted to save the world but Joel didn't give her that.

I agree with each interpretation, and she's going through every one in her head - but at no point do we ever feel she believes the lie. The reason why Marlene did not tell Ellie anything before surgery, is because in hope of a cure, they would have killed here no matter what she would have answered or agreed to, no matter how small a chance that it would have worked anyway, when you only have one shot at this, and not being able to make any tests, because Ellie would be the only test sample in any case.
    At the start of both episode 1 and 2, we are told by experts that finding a cure for this is impossible, and early on we are told by Joel that they have failed finding a cure many times before.
    With all that in mind, any sane parent would have done everything to save their child, exactly like Joel did. There would also be no reason to have any trust in the science of this broken a world, full of religious nuts and ruthless fanatics constantly fighting to control the QZ's. It's the lies at the end, and so leaving her no choice at all, that makes his decisions comparable to Marlene's.
    Marlene also defeat her own argument of Joel not being able to keep Ellie alive and from being "ripped apart" by the infected in the future to come, because if she really believed being immune do not really help Ellie from being killed, then what is the point of killing her in an attempt to make other people immune but equally in great risk of being killed by the already infected anyway

    you should play the frist game... and the second one if you want to be spoiled for season 2 and 3.... because season 2 started filming yesterday and it will have only seven episodes and it will be into 2 seasons.... so... play the game... at least seson part 1... so you can see the small differences between the game and the show... i think the show nailed it and probably even did it better... something that never happens in adaptations... adaptations most of the time suck... not this one... btw loved your reaction.

    My biggest issue in the show and the game is that the fire flies were in such a hurry. They should have just waited till she woke up and asked her. She would have agreed and it would give her a chance to talk to Joel and maybe even help him come to terms with it. At least stop him from killing everyone.

    • @Fangtorn
      @Fangtorn Před 6 měsíci

      To ask you have be willingly to take no for an answer, and the Fireflies aren't. There's no circumstance where they let the cure for mankind and everything they've been fighting for for twenty years walk out the door. It's ironic because she would've agreed, but they didn't know that.

      @@Fangtorn yeah but they could have easily asked for face value. Especially since Marlene knew she would say yes. Then worst case scenario if she says no you just force her anyway. I never found much to debate about with the ending. Marlene and the Fireflies confirmed to Joel they were about to murder Ellie - and hours earlier Ellie told Joel she wanted a future with him afterwards. Of course he's going to prevent Ellie's murder from happening.
    The Fireflies pretty much became an unethical, inhumane, murderous cult by this point - regardless of what their organisation's original purpose may have been. Sometimes things begin with good intentions, before they become increasingly warped.

    • @Fangtorn
      @Fangtorn Před 6 měsíci

      "and hours earlier Ellie told Joel she wanted a future with him afterwards."
      That's a very selective reading of that conversation. The crux of that exchange is Joel saying "Hey, we don't need to keep risking our lives to find the Fireflies, it's always almost gotten us killed, let's just go back to Jackson," and Ellie saying "No, we can go back to Jackson _after_ we find the Fireflies, but everything I've gone through has to be for something, there is no halfway." That is Ellie saying the priority is finding the Fireflies even if it means they die trying. If Ellie is willing to die just to _find_ the Fireflies, not even knowing a cure is possible, not even knowing she _will_ find the Fireflies, then she'd absolutely sacrifice herself for a cure, even a small chance of a cure.
      Imo, it's kinda ridiculous to lambaste the Fireflies as an "unethical, inhumane, murderous cult" for wanting to sacrifice one girl to save the entire human race in a world where girls like Ellie are torn apart by clickers, murdered by raiders, or by _actual_ murderous cults that are also led by pedophiles on a daily basis. It's missing the forest for the trees. The Fireflies are deeply flawed, they deserve to be criticized for whether their activities have done anything but make things worse in the last twenty years, but they _are_ trying to save the world.

    • @MrPicklerwoof
      @MrPicklerwoof Před 6 měsíci

      @@Fangtorn It isn't 'selective'. It literally is what she says to him (Afterwards we'll go wherever you want, I'll follow you anywhere). 😆
      At no point have they even discussed the possibility of dying to make a cure. In that exact moment when Joel is informed by Marlene they are about to murder Ellie he has no other frame of reference other than to prevent that from happening.

    • @MrPicklerwoof
      @MrPicklerwoof Před 6 měsíci

      @@Fangtorn Also, as for your second point. I'm sorry, but you can't claim to want to save humanity and then lose your humanity at the very first step by murdering a child without consent. Those two concepts are not compatible.
      That mindset was always going to lead to ruin. The ending pretty much proves it - if they hadn't chosen to murder Ellie, and spoke to her and Joel about it humanely instead, Ellie would have likely talked Joel round.
      I always viewed that as the real lesson here; basically, however bad the state of the world is in, you have to keep hold of your humanity. The Fireflies had truly lost sight of that.
      Like I said, whatever their good intentions may have been back in the day, by this point their mode of operating had become horrifically warped. They have all the signs of being cult-like, so the description fits.

    • @Fangtorn
      @Fangtorn Před 6 měsíci

      @@MrPicklerwoof No, it is selective because you're literally selecting the part where she agreed to follow him and ignoring the massively pointed _afterwards_ part. Her willingness to return to Jackson was predicated on finding the Fireflies _first_ no matter the danger, no matter the risk, no matter that success was not a given.
      If Joel been all "Gee whiz Ellie, we're almost at the Fireflies, do you wanna go back to Wyoming afterwards?" and Ellie had been like "Oh boy Joel, I can't wait to live in Jackson once this Firefly thing is wrapped up," then you'd have a point. That was not the tenor of the conversation.
      Of course dying for the cure was was never discussed, but dying trying to find the Fireflies was a readily apparent and repeatedly demonstrated risk that Ellie willingly accepted. That was the point of that conversation.
      Again, in a world where human life is dirt cheap, where girls like Ellie are killed en masse for much less, it is absurd to me to value the life or informed consent of one girl over all those others. Even if the Fireflies were sacrificing their humanity to save humanity it would still be worth it. What's their moral virtue over the survival of the species? You could also easily argue if they'd been _more_ inhumane and just killed Joel they would've succeeded.

    • @MrPicklerwoof
      @MrPicklerwoof Před 6 měsíci

      @@Fangtorn No, it isn't selective. Ellie's words about finding the Fireflies and seeing it through were based on them taking her blood; it was worth the risk travelling there, with Joel providing protection, to give the Fireflies a chance of making a cure. They both agreed on that.
      But you're evading my main point: At that exact moment when Joel finds out Ellie is to be murdered, his only frame of reference is the knowledge she wants a future with him (which she explicitly confirms earlier) and that she never once talked to him about giving her life for this. Taking a risk to get there and sacrificing herself are not the same thing.
      As for your last point, it's clear you and I are at opposite ends of the spectrum when it comes to the value of a single human life, so there's not much point discussing that. I feel the ending itself proves my point anyway. Losing their humanity towards one human is what directly leads to their own downfall.

      I watched all their reactions and have the same feeling. They are so insistent on trying to guess what's going to happen based on nothing, but they miss and misinterpret plainly outlined character traits. It's really baffling. Like their whole thing with Ellie being a psycho or somehow crazy from cordyceps? Even after the conversation where Ellie leans toward the "i have to help if I can, no matter what, theres no turning back" attitude, they still say something about Ellie being selfish? Of course they should have given Ellie a choice, but the whole point of the ending is these two people who are taking away Ellie's agency for their own reasons. For Joel it's that he cannot lose another daughter, can't let Ellie die at any cost. For Marlene it's her saving the world at any cost.

    I have the Cure for this outbreak. We see Anna was in labor when she was infected and cut the cord on Ellie straight away. As such Ellie is immune. If Ellie was not gay and had a baby that child would be immune. So get a pregnant woman , when she goes into labor infect her just like Anna. Thirty or fourty of these cases and the next generation would be immune.

      Just because Ellie is gay doesn't preclude her from bearing children, when Maria and Tommy find out they'll start a baby farm in Jackson and have Ellie pop out a baby on a regular recurring schedule until they hit their quota of immune children - and then they can start breeding them; Jackson will become famous as a post-outbreak eugenics plantation . . . unless the whole idea really pisses off Joel and he decides to wipe Jackson off the map.

    And this is why, there is only one line in the second game that I love (because according to me the second game is crap).
    So Ellie finds out the truth, and she has been furious with Joel for a while not talking or living with him.
    When she finally talks to him, he says:" If God gave me the chance, I would do it all over again" and I say, me too Joel.
    Losing her? I would like my daughter to live, my 14-year-old old who knows nothing about life and has been attacked and severely traumatized is deciding nothing about her life now, until she is 18 at least.
    This is a silly game and show, but teenagers and little kids see these things too, I don't want them to start treating parents like betrayers because they didn't let them do anything for their own good.
