It's mostly the MSX computer VN and princess raising games.
That artstyle is also very derivative and limited to technology by its own right, not to criticize but it becomes very distilled and has it own look going 110%. It's smae kind of thing as anime itself was heavily distilled from Disney to be anime instead.
That's what I immediately thought when I saw her design. I love the 80s/90s anime style so much! I really wish it would make a comeback.

Yeah the only thing missing is a hot mysterious guy like Tuxedo Mask. If you've seen Ashita no nadja, Cardcaptors, Magic Knight Rayearth, or any others; there was always the handsome mysterious love interest. But since this is lesbian/yuri/GL, the hot mysterious guy trope won't be in the game sadly.

@@milmil5350 Cardcaptors didn't have a handsome love interest, the love interest was a little boy the same age as Sakura. The only handsome mysterious guy was the alter ego of her brother's boyfriend, and the wizard dude.
Also you were apparently a CLAMP fan, but not enough of a fan to pick up on how gay all their work was.
Hell, even Sailor Moon was super gay, aside from Tuxedo Mask.
The fact that this game is even more visually appealing than Pocket Mirror: GoldenerTraum is breathtaking. The unique art style is super compelling as well. I cannot wait for the finished product; I just know it'll be one of my favorite games!

@altrovic815 not anime, but the characters names, clothes, the food, buildings, inside of buildings, the german names of soundtracks, in pocket mirror there is a whole area dedicated to the Walzer dance for Egliette, there is so much but you'd have to pay attention. It isn't just the surface!

You know, one of those endings will be canon and what made the events of Pocket Mirror happen, the other nine are What Ifs which honestly could be either more happy, sad or just equally bittersweet. EDIT: Thank you for the 700 likes.

... the canon ending seems to involve Elise choosing Rozenmarine as her lover, but Elise ultimately betrays the girl to obtain her "chance at happiness" through the Strange Boy's devil deal, which leads her to meet and marry Roman die Heiligue. At least, I think that's how the canon ending will go, we'll see.
@@Hennichell not to mention that, because the other 9 endings are what ifs, one of the 2 main endings of pocket mirror is another what if where elise didn't make the contract, maybe it'll be featured and Elise loses that lover or feels more attracted to Roman. Who knows, we just have to wait to find out.

Even if this game is mostly just pixel art and mostly 2d graphic, I can tell that this game has a soul compared to the majority of triple A games out there
Technically it's a Dave The Diver type of game where an "indie" label releases the game under the blessing of an AAA publisher

This art obviously has had so much work put into it, and it's absolutely gorgeous. I'm tired of people thinking that 2D games are somehow "less than" 3D games.
Reminds me of the 90’s. This is how nostalgia bait should work. Invoke the feel of the era but enhance it with modern tech, so things you thought about as a kid are actually now possible.

I felt the same way! It's super weird; I stumbled upon this and was immediately captivated by it. The clear and deliberate sense of style, the charm of the animation, and the fractured fairy tale vibes.
I almost cried watching the trailer, the wait is truly worth ever since I complete Pocket Mirror back in 2016. Thank you for all the effort that has been put into this game for years.

LoL, yeah, accidentally watching the trailer for Radiant Historia for the Nintendo DS thinking it was an anime is what got me back into video gaming in 2013. So much for giving it up, lol!
The art style is fantastic and I love the fact that unlike most games use can’t use violence and fight your way out of trouble. Words and running away as fast as your red shoes can take you as what can win the day, i can’t wait to play this.

@@GoddoDoggo Thats what gets me. This genre of game is littered with games that don't require violence and actively encourages you to run. It's art style is unique and I'm sure it's execution will be great, but the foundations are used by other games. It's not unique in that. Nothing is, for everything is beautiful based on execution.

I grew up in the 90's, worked on this game but have personally never heard of Thumbelina: A Magical Story before; it looks so beautiful and seems super interesting! Thank you very much for mentioning it. :)
@Skyleofr I honestly can’t remember if I owned it on VHS or that we rented it at our local Video Rental Store but I know I’ve watched Thumbelina: A Magical Story over a dozen times! I think my mom can vouch for this because she witnessed my interests at an early age when it came to anime!🤣
@@meganmcdonald3333 Haha, having a strong interest in anime at a young age is great, it makes for fun memories like that. I've had some Cardcaptor Sakura on VHS and grew up with all those things, like Magical Doremi, Sailor Moon or Kiki's Delivery Service... A lot of the music I've made for this game have strong influences from those anime as a result but Thumbelina completely flew under my radar, somehow! I'll make sure to check it out as soon as I can 😊

Yeah, I'm being reminded of the Lunar RPG series that came out on SEGA CD and PS1. Working Design was responsible for publishing the Lunar series in the US on both consoles back in the 90's.
The 90's anime artwork and aesthetics takes me back to that era when 90's anime like Sailor Moon, Magic Knight Rayearth, Devil Hunter Yohko, Fushigi Yugi, Blue Seed, Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water, and probably others that I can think of stand out to anime fans that have good taste.
I don't see many people talking about this, but I love the narrator's voice. It's so calming and it brings back a lot of nostalgic feelings
It sounds so natural that I forgets it's an English dub!

I liked the art style from 80s and 90s animes. So amazing and cute. It's great how some people are interested more and more bringing back "old" art styles and giving us such nostalgia
This game looks very appealing and I really like the fact that the protagonist can't just fight monsters in the woods because she is just a small human but she goes into the forest anyway. Also, the village life plotline seems very interesting with romancing ladies and trying to avoid raising suspicions of being a witch. Can't wait to see more of this story!
I am one of many of us to say that I'd definitely pay money to play games that are as amazing as this one and Pocket Mirror. Please don't stop at this one, these types of games are what keeps the RPG Horror genre alive for me!!!!

Now this trailer excites me! The animations and the pixelart are so beautiful and cute! The bachelorettes are cute too, even though I always prefer the male options. I can hardly decide which I would pick because all three are good choices! The different endings are great too. A creative game with many gameplay styles. That's very unique.
Yeah, I'm not interested in girls, so not having male options doesn't call much my interested or attention in the romance part (actually wouldn't play the game in either because I have no money lol), but the only thing I couldn pay attention was the art style and animation from 80s animes.
That red shoe tap screams Cardcaptor Sakura reference and I somehow respect this project even more now

The whole time I was watching the trailer I was debating whether this was a port of an untranslated/unreleased 90s JP game or a retro homage. I think when I saw there were cutscenes that not only look like top-quality studio anime of the era (deep esoteric themes, realistic sociological modeling, and faded colors from VHS transfers and all), but were also in the 4:3 aspect ratio, I figured it JUST HAD to be a port, right? Surely nobody in the modern era is capable of recreating the superb artistry of the 90s that perfectly, right?

Guys, you’re not playing as yourself in this game, you’re playing as the main character. This isn’t stardew valley where you pick the romance you want for yourself, you pick the romance you think is best for the mc.
A game that works with balance between work, personal and social life. With all the different possibilities, no wonder it took about 4-5 years to make. Can't wait to see how it turns out!

I, for one, am a complete sucker for the 80-90s shoujo-styled aesthetic this game's offering.
Also, I can tell this game took inspiration from the Princess Maker series (most specifically the second one) and the early-2010 horror RPG Maker games, which definitely makes this game feel even more nostalgic.

Now this is an interesting trailer. It connects gameplay footage (multiple samples and types, I might add) with cutscenes via a montage. And the narrator enforces the fairy tale like atmosphere with a grandmotherly voice. Not to mention that I can't tell if the narrator is a woman, or a man, or another gender. That helps with the anime esthetic and their occasional gender-fluid art style.

I am so excited for this game! I remember following the release of pocket mirror and playing the demo back around 2014 in its early days on tumblr. I'm sure this game will be fantastic as well and I love seeing people make games that they're clearly passionate about. I've been anticipating the release of this game for a while and I'm looking forward to playing it!!
