The original Rustler is a great, great platform to learn the hobby. Lots of hop up and upgradable parts to learn about and experiment with. Lots of fun. Can’t beat it for a beginner RC
The how to put on body quit no bump man how do you put on the bumper on the
Tried to get to 70+ recently. Got to 74 with this:
1) 76/31 gearing
2) 17mm conversion $40
3) Hoons wheels/tires
4) 3s Traxxas battery
Wheelie bar helps, higher C rated battery helps, more weight helps. But these aren’t necessary.
I always give a push start, so my rear driveshafts don’t explode!
Thanks for the great video Mark!
I 100% respect anyone that puts hoons tires on a non-arrma vehicle, lol. Such awesome tires (as long as you're ok with replacing them often)
@@swololikesolo1625 they work great on the Rustler!!!!
Great pointers thanks!
@@swololikesolo1625 They're great burnout tires. Put them on my slash 2wd 6s. It's a beater
I have to replace tires on felony constantly
I bought my first hobby grade RC last September. It was a Rustler XL-5 I was going to keep stock. After putting bearings in it, now it’s pretty much a VX-L... and I’ve added a Stampede 4x4, Slash 4x4 VXL, E-Revo 2.0, X-Maxx and a Hoss to my fleet. It was a very slippery slope from “keeping it stock” to now.
The rustler xl5 was my first rc car. Some parts I've upgraded are a 5100kv brushless motor, the Traxxas steel spline constant velocity axles, and the Traxxas wheelie bars. The best upgrades though in my mind are the Hot Racing aluminum transmission case and sealed aluminum differential case. The transmission case alone kept my motor temps way down as I was having troubles with it overheating.
Have the 2wd vxl stampede and love it! Wheelies all day as well as the speed ! Nothing but fun!
Great video! Once I stepped up to the higher voltage 11.1 volt 3C LiPo batteries this truck became a wheelie monster. At 50 MPH and giving full throttle still yielded a wheelie. It takes a little practice to control the wheelies. If you want to give this beast full throttle using a 3C LiPo forget the stock wheelie bar and go for the longer wheelie bar version. (I would love to see Traxxas come out with a new "short" wheelie bar that can adjust lower to the ground.) Switching to the heavier 9.6 volt NiMh 8C batteries will keep the front wheels on the ground but will yield less speed. For those not looking for the highest speed and a unbelievable responsive truck this is a great option. This truck is amazing with so many speed options and battery combinations! Depending on your servo and the speed you plan on driving the VXL you might want to adjust your multi-function knob on your transmitter all the way clockwise to make the steering a little less sensitive especially for high speed action. The original rear knobby and front ribbed tires that comes with the VXL are way better for off road action and control but if you are looking for speed on asphalt definitely go with the anaconda tires Mark recommended. I tried the anacondas on a golf course and there was no grip on the grass or the sand traps. On turf and off road the original rear knobby/spike tires and ribbed front tires provided the best speed and control for me. Thanks Mark for another great video!
I've had my Rustler VXL 2wd for 10 years. I feel like I break it every time I drive it, but man is it one of my favorites.
I agree evertime i break something!! Its a fun car still
i break mine because its 4s
Who remembers the original rustlers that had a ceramic heat sink attached to the motor to keep it cool. And rc cars had mechanical speed controls. Yes, a servo controlled the speed control. There is so much room on the chassis because there used to be more components and they were bigger taking up more room. And I'm thinking the price really hasn't changed much
The Rustler VXL was my first hobby grade rc car and still to this day it puts a smile on my face when I drive it.
And what's your go to rc now ?
@@mapledelight currently I have 14 cars in my collection and I change up what car I drive often but usually it is a Hoss.
What batteries you using and charger?
I fix these for people weekly. Beautifully simple... God bless Traxxas share-ware...and the Stampede, Bandit, Slash, Rustler design. 😎👍
What’s your Opinion on the Summit?
@@verynick Oh yeah! Also another beautifully simple, easy to fix on the fly design, because it's all on top. It's definitely a monster in its own right. It can definitely take a beating. Upgraded A-Arms and hub carriers and its almost indestructible. Very underrated by people for the beast it is. My only complaint would be te stock tires. They just don't do it justice. Same with the Hoss.
What’s ur opinion on the stampede i personality own one it was my first electric RC car and I also have a EREVO and my first ever RC car is a Michael Schumacher F-250 nitro truck it’s 3 speed nitro Idk the actual name of it
Bro I love my rustler💪🏾😎
@@roguesouthracing1553 the summit is a pain to work on idk what you’re talking about.
This was my first hobby grade RC back in the early 2000s - epic model by Traxxas
Mine’s was the 1/16 Traxxas Slash! I love it!
I won’t called it hobby grade, traxxas is just a notch over tyco
We are not in the 2000s unfortnatly
i bought one back in January....after a gap in rc of 10 years....love it to bits...i have the black red and blue color...i bought the same tyres which are ok ...but now have 17mm hex adaptors and speed wheels....im looking into weighting it down at the front...
I'm loving my RustlerVXL had a jato3.3 back in the day. Broke right axel, right a-arm, left castor block but super glue is working great on that part for now 😂, about 30 hrs bashing flips 12foot drops all stock great RC easy to fix
I just got a Rustler VXL 4x4 and I love it! I took it to the dirt track yesterday and it was a blast. I was feathering the throttle most the time. So much power on a 2s.
2s is garbage dont waste your time and go 3s..I waited too long before switching to 3s and i still regret it to this day
@@gabthefisherman5030 why do you regret ? I m really intersted because like it s past and well i don't get a hint why u could regret that.
Also i m agree with 3s is better but as sonn as you have fun it doesn't really matter for me.
The Rustler VXL is so cool. It was one of my first hobby grade RC cars and I still own and run it.
The first hobby grade RC truck I ever had was a two-wheel drive Rustler back in 99 it came with a very crappy servo style electronic speed controller LOL The turning radius sucked bad After I modded all that it done fairly decent It costed $200 and I probably put more than that in it before I realized I could have just got a Losi Team Associated etc lol Ya live and learn sometimes and some people learn the hard way That's why I love channels like this one Mark doesn't sugar coat crap and try to make it look good 🔥👍✌️
Release the beast. I BOUGHT IT FOR 279 A YEAR AGO.I put the rpm wide a arms and the Hot racing composite/aluminum transmission case and Street hawk street treads tires it sit low and wide with that half inch offset its my street beast.Ive had it to 67mph in less than a 200 ft.
I finally broke down and bought one! A true legend as is the 2wd stampede!
RPM makes a wide arm kit for the rustler 2wd. I ran those with 2.8 trenchers when I had one. Allowed me to do back flips off a ramp. Also, I believe I used Stampede axles. Same part number but with an X at the end.
The Rustler is the best 2wd ever made
Traxxas Rustler is awesome. They keep that 2wd stadium truck looks and make it look fantastic. Mine 2 years old and sits in a case next to the nitro version.
Back in 1999 I walked into a hobby shop to buy an on road car, and an off road car. I said I wanted a buggy, the guy at the counter said I would enjoy a truck if I wasn't racing. I walked out with a Rustler, I knew the guy was correct the first time I took it out. The second car was the original 4-Tec, I still have that
On the 2wd, a very cheap and easy way to strengthen the front bulkhead is to fill every cavity with epoxy, you can also add tire weights to help keep the front end down while driving. On my slash I use 28g weights stuck in the middle of the front bulkhead and 14g or 1/2oz strapped to each of the front a-arms, really makes the difference while driving at any speed and keeps the center of gravity low.
Just got a Rustler 4x4, love it. Could you do a tutorial on swapping out the stock gear for the faster one? Maybe a step by step for us all. Thanks !!
My all time favorite RC!
Traxxas is awesome! And can't wait until they come up with some new cars.
Two words: RACE IT! 😁👍 Awesome content as always!! 🤘🤘
We’ve definitely come a long way I remember getting my first digital computer FM radio system in the late 90’s one of the features was ABS I remember thinking using that was cheating because you could still grab full brake on a 2wd truck or buggy without sending it into a spin (you still had to adjust it) that was a high end $300 radio back then now stuff like AVC or TSM comes with RTR’s and relatively inexpensive systems then there’s the speeds 40-50+mph for a RTR 2wd truck or buggy didn’t just happen like it does now it usually required a trip back to the LHS for the hottest motor on the shelf a 7cell NiCad or NiMh battery and a pinion even then it probably got close but didn’t happen
Can’t wait to see the summit video😜
Also, I’m disappointed you didn’t say See-Ment. Lol
I love when he says see-ment
Those tires/wheel combo actually make a huge difference on the car’s look.
Love my rustler vxl, and my stampede vxl! Will get the bandit
Man we wanna see it drifting and power sliding on some loose dirt, thats what its all about with these, learning how to handle the power and steering. Seen endless jumping and speed runs but not enough cool vids of real action. I have two of these so I can race mates, tame the power and use it to slide them corners. Cheers man.
Still waiting dude. Please get the rustler sideways. Dont care about top speed or how high it can crash into the ground from. Get it driftin n slidin cheers.
I m absolutly agree with you.
Put 8 on. Of weight on front bulkhead area top plate you will not have to worry about wheelie. You will get better speed numbers.also Grp tires will improve your top speed .Love your videos
I have one... Rebuilt the transmission 5 times... The car just destroys the differential... Even with hardened steel planet gears, the diff just explodes... I have a hot racing aluminum diff housing, and finally on the 5th rebuild I installed the hot racing locked diff and has been holding up SO FAR... Also you'll need to upgrade to steel or aluminum axles, and as Mark said upgrade the tires.. I have pro line trenchers on mine and they hold up amazing... Pricy but absolutely worth it... The rustler vxl 2wd is an absolute monster! Save yourself time and frustration.. Upgrade the tranny, axles, and tires immediately..
My Rustler XL-5 is my favorite RC car. It also dominates the RC car track in our yard. I'm very tempted to get a VXL for on road use.
The blue wheelie bar looks wayyy much better on the BigFoot. I have one on my BigFoot Stampede and it looks amazing 👌
I love the TRX caster blocks. Small detail but really adds some flair to it.
That was the first mod I did to my Rustler XL-5 and basically sent me down the path of RC lol
My wife bought me the 4x4 VXL for Father's Day in 2020. Super fast on 3s!!
great present!! she sounds awesome!
Great video. I’ve just ordered two new vxl 4x4 rustler for my sisters kids. I’ll change servos and the spur/pinion and see if they like their present.
I love the traxxas rustler my first one was the nitro rustler and then the vxl rustler but I had a Schumacher storm nitro with 3 speed gbox before the vxl rustler the Schumacher storm nitro was crazy fast and I got the hpi firestorm flux 77mph+ they can't keep the front end down even with a bit of weight on the front of all of them I love all of my rc cars but I love the nitro rustler great video they are all crazy fast keep the great videos up
The Anaconda wheels are soooo right on it!
The original brushed rustler was my first rc car and I beat the heck out of it. 20 something years later i still have it with most of its original parts. I put a leftover xl5 esc and 550 motor in it and my 8 year old nephew is now bashing it. Probably one of the best chassis ever built for just having fun.
Loved that run with Rustler
front end lifts.. you ain't driving no more, your just holding on.
Truth
Lol that's why my rustler got a wheelie bar till that fails
Isnt this the same for any car 4x4 or 2wd
Right i put some weights in the front to help and stiffened the body from flapping when it lifts i bought it brushed and completely upgraded it to a brushless set up from castle the copperhead with a 5700 kv 23t pinion and a 84t spur thing riips wheelie machine aka donut master
And tires i cant keep a normal set on there just too fast i had to stop at a 2s pack if i go to a 3 or 4s the tires just fly apart
Those tires are so sick looking dude
The 2wd rustler vxl is hands down the best .
Love my rustler vxl!
Love the 2wd bandit/rusty chassis cars i have bought a few myself.
Great review and video
Love my rustler Vxl. I’ve got 68 out of mine. Haven’t drove it in a while
Whats the difference between normal version and vxl..i have stampede 2wd brushed and today i found some used old one stampede vxl.cant find online whats the difference
Awesome video bro
I remember back in the day a guy tried to race dirt offroad with a rustler, it was hilarious! Not very effective but fun to watch!
If you put the 3s battery in with high speed gearing you have to tighten the slipper clutch to a quarter turn or less.
You should make a race rustler like jang from URC did several years ago.
I know I’m commenting on a old video, but on my rustler vxl 2wd I got it up to 53 on the high speed gearing and with a 3s lipo. I was to scared to go any faster so I might order a 2s lipo for it lol.
bad to the bone, brother!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ordering one tomorrow! 🤩
I'm from Barbados and looking at buying this Rustler vxl 2wd and since we don't have any hobby shops here I'll have to import everything. What extra components would you recommend for an off road racing setup. Thanks
I bought an xl-5 and upgraded to brushless. I can’t keep it from lifting, any suggestions on how to fix that? Should I expect the same speeds as the vxl? Or is there some other parts needed to get it to the same level as vxl?
Just baught this today love it
awesome video awesome car i had one and like it might be getting one
You could do what I did with my Slash: full hardened steel gears, 54t spur, 28t pinion, MIP drive shafts, MIP 17mm wheel hex adapters, X0-1 tires.
I have the four-wheel drive VXL and I'd love it
Heck yeah!
멋져요 ~~^^ 영상 잘보고갑니다 ~~^^
Nice review
I love my traxxas slash 2wd. I still have my first rc car I got a dhk Hunter 4wd I've got a surpass hobby rocket 4068 brushless motor and it goes like the wind and it a tufts truck
Can someone tell me why every time I make a turn the front outside wheel wobbles violently? Happens on both left and right turns. It's also a rustler 2wd with the exact same anaconda tires. I wanna say it's bcuz the tires just have too much grip, but I'm still new to the hobby so I'm not entirely sure
My daughter is 7 and I’m trying to find her an entry level rc. I haven’t been into it in 10 years and I had a traxxis slayer, so I gotta get my feet wet again myself. Videos like this help, thanks!
How did you change the front wheels with the ball bearings there on the rustler?
Those are the same upgraded rims that come stock on the E-revo 2.0 they are nice! 👍
I own botha 2wd and 4wd, I put some hoons on the 2wd and it rips on road, sometime I'll do mid motor and 6s with it
I have the brushed one that I made brushless and add different wheels, diff locked, drive shafts and better linkages
Definitely a Rustler fan
Hi Mark,
Did you make any changes to the steering system? Any recommendations on that part?
Is it worth to go to aluminum servo arm and aluminum steering subsystem? Any suggestions on servo-saver modifications?
As usual great videos and I also loves my rustler 2wd vxl
POWER HOBBY SERVOS
First car I ever had back in 98 I believe along with my clod buster lol. But after seeing this video I think I need to buy another one. Lol
1993 here and I remember rc cars being awful unless it was nitro. I took like a 15 year break from the hobby and now stuff is sooo crazy It’s awesome!
Best review for this car I want to buy one and this was best review thank you
I changed the springs to the red ones and put sticky wheel weights on the chassis to keep front down. Also put speed hawks on the rear which helped it stay down.
Speed hawks are too small go with proline street fighter or anaconda
Nice video
Just an idea pick up the new gearbox from the drag slash and drop in in the rustler it's alot stronger and would be super cool to see
Yes please would like to see what you think about it
I reckmend the rmp wheel bar.. Tip of the day.😀
Señor Mark... got a Traxxas question. I am going to buy the Rustler VXL. If you buy the colored like A-arms and various other accessories from Traxxas are they heavy duty upgrades like day RPM or are they just colored versions of the stock parts? Thanks.
Nice colors
The best👍
Loved my 1st electric
Rustler from 98 if my memory serves me right, I think it had a mechanical speeed control. In 02 I opted for the nitro version with the .15 engine
are the anacondas the same height as the slash 4x4 vxl tires
This is 1 of my cars and its a blast. I kinda wanna start racing with it or my bandit.
A very good video. it would be interesting to see it bashed at high speeds off road or at a skate park. That would test its durability.
Is 28/83 a good gearing to go with for the rustler vxl?
HEY MAN SO HOW IS THE BRUSHED RUSLER OF THAT TRUCK. I WAS THINKING OF GETTING ONE. NOT SO INTO BRUSHLESS.
Hey mark love the vids man but we need more than just traxxas cars maybe losi arrma element redcat team associated etc. but if not I’ll still love you lol keep up the good work buddy
do you happen to know the offset of the stock traxxas wheels for the rustler 2wd?
Have a good week stay safe and healthy
you too!!
What are the benefits of getting this one compared to the awd one? I know less parts for breakage but other than that. I really do like the black chrome wheels and green/blue body.
2wd = less rotating mass. So technically it can go faster with same power unit
Easier and quicker to work on, cheaper repair bills for parts.... and rear wheel power for drifting and power sliding. Needs more gentle and precise control and driving.
Great video! that car is a beast! I love those tires, can I get those to fit the Hoss?
Are these ok for the rustler 4x4 vxl?
Did they fit ?
I didn’t catch what battery you were running? 2s or 3s?
Hahaha. Ricky Bobby I wanna go fast!!!
Which 2s lipo did you use the 5800 or the 7600?
