      Built it, came out really good and liked the look of the raw iron so after putting the body together ( without head and wiring ) I used super clean degreaser and water to clean off all oil, and used a heat gun to dry- while still warm sprayed with Rust-Oelum Clear gloss spray and use heat gun lightly in between coats to help dry, used about 3 coats, thought it looked great without any paint, even the light head looked good without being painted, had kind of a gray powder-coat--one thing I did wrong was not using thread locker ( LockTite ) when assembling, thought Gorilla Glue on threads would work, and did but not good enough, made it for my Grandson had him help and he loved it, now may make another for me !

    • @ToddMcMahon
      @ToddMcMahon  Před 3 lety

      I ended up purchasing some components that were galvanized. Since I wanted to spot-weld them once they were in position I used acid to remove the galvanization. You're not supposed to breath in the zinc fumes. If you are using glue you can skip the acid bath.

  • @John-of5sh

    LMAO at the little kid at the end of your video shorting out that plug-in!!!
    Sounds like you and I have the same problem-"Instant Gratification". I want stuff yesterday! And like you I probabaly pay to much in my rush to get all the little goodies. Anyway, Thank You Sir for sharing your expertise on this video. I do indeed want to build one of these "Robots" even though I could probabaly buy one cheaper. Where's the fun in that?!
    Now I do have a question. First, I don't have a welder so I will likely resort to epoxy ot JB Weld to lock the pieces together. If I acetone the pieces will that be enough prep to get them to take a coat or two of paint? I would really like to avoid the acid treatment. Its currently 9* outside here in Central Illinois and even the garage is almost to cold to work in.
    Lastly, I try to be a real safety nut. I was very impressed watching you use goggles and a face shield both. I lost sight in my left eye so I tend to go to the extremes to protect my other peeper. I don't hesitate to call someone out in these video's if I think they are doing something dangerous. You went above and beyond! Thank you once again for sharing !!!
    Off to Home Depot!!!
    To you people asking for a parts list, do as I did. Pause the video and snapshot the parts list. You can either print it out or as I did, sent it to my email. I have the pictures on my phone,
    easy peasy!

      Hi John, If you are gluing the parts you don't have to worry about zinc gasses like I did - so you don't have to worry about the Acid. Acetone should remove all oils and prep it well enough for painting (I've had good luck with Brake cleaner spray as well). Thanks for the comment regarding the screen-shot method for the parts list. Although the TEXT version of the parts list has been pinned to the top of the comments from day 1, I was unable to add the drawing image. I don't weld, what type of glue do you recommend? I also don't have a drill press so will need to problem solve the cord issue...can probably ask a friend to do this part of it.

    • @ToddMcMahon
      @ToddMcMahon  Před 3 lety +1

      I would think that any typical two-part epoxy glue would work. Just remember to clean all grease and oils off the threads; use the glue sparingly so you don't have a lot of mess to clean up; and remember to clean up the glue that gets squished out from the threads IMMEDIATELY and completely, because it will be much more difficult to clean once the glue has cured. With regards to the hole for the cable, if you have a hand-held electric drill, a good selection of drill bits, and a vise or clamp, you might still be able to make the hole yourself. Be sure that the hole has sharp edges removed so it doesn't cut into the wire, and remember to glue the wire in place as well so it doesn't move. Good luck!

    • @ToddMcMahon
      @ToddMcMahon  Před 6 měsíci

      Prices vary greatly based on where you live, and where you shop for the parts, as well as what materials you purchase. While I built this primarily out of black steel gas pipe, you may want to use Schedule 40 PVC. I suggest you shop for the parts on the internet, to get a ball-park price, and then if you are still interested, go to a couple hardware stores to see if you can find better prices. I spent more time shopping than I did building it.
