- In this video we put in the insulation, hang gypsum drywall, plaster using a traditional Japanese lime plaster called shikkui, and put on the exterior siding. The carpenter shows a cheap and easy way to recreate traditional Japanese lattice siding.

Imperfections are just character that will always remind you of the love and work you put into making this house into your home.
Regardless, it looks beautiful to me.
Yes. And, your children will cherish the small imperfections which tie you and your work to the house.
In Japanese they even have a word for imperfections!
Wabi sabi
I mean.. if you want to get better at it you certainly have enough areas to practice over the years :) Certainly the trowels you're using look very "DIY" vs the hand forged stuff the real artisans use. That may have something to do with the final finish as well, no? I mean... that's the excuse I use, lol.

Well said
So happy you posted an update, we've been waiting. The progress is spectacular.

Thank you!

so good of you to speak for all . seems a popular thing now
Take it from someone who has done many home improvement projects over the years, we are always going to be our own biggest critic. Nothing will ever seem just right and we'll always be able to spot that one little imperfection. But as the years go by you'll be able to look at those walls, tells friends and family about them, and it will in the end be a major source of personal pride. Give yourself a big pat on the back, they look amazing.
THIS! People will come over and say what a beautiful job you have done and how magnificent it is. All I can see is a collection of errors in everything I have done.
Ah I never knew what that plaster was...I really like the stark whiteness next to natural wood. It's such a beautiful yet simple design.
You continue to amaze with skills typically completed by highly-skilled artisans and builders. Your kids will prize all you hard work and dedication for making a better life for them. Impressive!
Thank you!
@@TokyoLlama And they have a chance to follow this journey in the years to come. It took me and my sister just over 20 years to admit that our parents did a lot right and to thank them for what they did to and for us. I still remember the wonderful look on the faces of my parents and I wish that you will have the same experience in the future as a parent.
Been subscribed since episode 1 of the abandoned house seris and it must be very rewarding to see your dream home finally taking shape after so long.
You have my utmost respect for your dedication to see this project through from start to finish and when it got tough in parts I especially admire that you always found a way to move forward, never back. Enjoy the benefits of Japanese home ownership for you and your family for many years to come!
Thanks for watching for so long. Yes, it is satisfying though getting impatient now to move in.
Le sigo desde Mexico desde su primer video. Su trabajo, su dedicaciòn, los detalles, el acondicionamiento y planeación de los exteriores..el esfuerzo físico!. Señor, mis respetos.
Same... I can't wait to see when they are settled in. ah winter pics will be beautiful in that house.
My answer for the intense Japanese heat has always been to wet my tee-shirt and work until it is dry. This worked well this past summer when I was roofing my shed in Ichihara.
I love the small inconsistencies of the shikui. Feels very natural.
Those white walls are beautiful and complement the wood so well.
Thank you for the vid! It was highly anticipated
I agree. You could have painted them or done wood paneling, but I love how traditional it looks.
Mate, you should be really proud of yourself. You've taken the inside of the place from looking like a barn to a beautiful modern house. Great job!
"do you have any disappointing walls in your house?" Me: all of them.
I immediately thought the same thing lol
Same. In my home, it still has the horrible walls done by whoever owned it before me. Hideous wood paneling that hides even more hideous hardboard paneling. One of these days I will "correct it", but it has been about seven years now and I still haven't so I don't know lol.
@@NotSoCrazyNinja haha I guess mine aren't that bad, but they're very custom to the 50s. And I kind of felt bad destroying that, so I left them be. It is very unique feature of this house.
w
if your house doesn't have a walls that's a problem ;)
I also have a few "disappointing walls" in my house 😂 I taught myself how to finish drywall and let's just say it's not a job that is very forgiving to beginners 🤣
Agree, I’m doing the drywall finishing and paint in one of the bedrooms - I find the lime plaster much easier!
@@TokyoLlama What I did with my drywall, I used a little different type of plaster (back in the day), can't remember the name. But I sanded it down, by hand.. I wanted it smooth.
I don't know if Japanese drywall plaster can handle that. But worth testing, on a left over plate.
Wooohooo, a new video - you have no idea how happy this makes me. ❤️ seeing the progress you and your family make on your house.
Thank you!
Same for me. Your house is absolutey stunning.
In Germany we hafe similiar thing called "Kalkfarbe", literally "lime-pint". It's a traditional material as well and used for damp walls in cellars and - a bit like in Japan in the sections between the beams of the classic German timbered houses.
These days you can buy it in varying consistencies from fairly thing paint to stuff looking like that one you used. I guess the paint would be easier to apply but you probably need a couple more layers to achieve the same effect.
Sir Tokyo Llama.
im crying watching your video.
seeing your house come together since day 1is an overflowing happiness for me.
thank you.
Hello I am Japanese living in Australia. Previously, we painted our study room wall. Last year, it was hit by a flood and we used an insurance company's contract plasterer. They did a very rough job, and we found that our painting job was much more careful and better! :D 奥さんへ:落ちないように気をつけてくださいねー💦
TL: "It was a FOAM-idable task."
ME: *Facepalm*

Awesome :)
Damn you took my joke.

"It's all DIY" and "the coat is uneven" and "maybe I could do it better later".... Going to start calling you Saint of Humbleness! Via YT, the drywall and plaster look amazingly good; and the stain/sealant on the exposed beams is just BEAUTIFUL. I've spent the summer myself purchasing a new home, doing the move & prepping the old house for sale. Nothing compared to your renovation campaign. Kudos to you for being honest with us; but please be honest with yourself: the reno so far is SPECTACULAR!
I can't imagine what you consider "disappointing"!! That entire job is stunning!
Me making a mental note about how to properly apply shikui.. even tho i'm super sure ill never use it lmao.
I've already decided I will use the powdered variety lol
And tbh you will probably forget about it in a few months
The white walls and the wood beams looks amazing. Great work 👏👏
I love the blend of modern livability and traditional style that is coming together.
The lime walls look authentic and really bring out the natural wood in the house! I have some disappointing walls. I see all the mistakes I made when painting my walls in my house. It is part of learning a new skill. We see all the mistakes we made, no-one else will see them unless we point them out. Thanks for updating us on your progress!
fan jackets, japan is so much further into the future than we are here in germany XDD
I wish it’s available here in the US...sadly its not.
@@kikayme8134 Unfortunately it is not available here either
I once talked to someone who inspected nuclear power plants. He said they wear vests made with thick frozen gel packs. I live in Washington D.C. which has serious summers. So, I could appreciate such a garment.
ahhh, after passing 12:35 I understood, before that happend I was thinking of jackets with "TOKYO LLAMA" logos :D ...a real fan jacket
Yeah I looked at my boyfriend at said "only in Japan" hahahaahaha :D
I was just wondering what was going on with you and the new house. Looks like you've made a ton of progress. I'm no expert but the shikkui looks great! Keep it up.
When you remove those tape from the paint, looks so satisfying.
Absolutely remarkable! You will remember this time very differently from most of us quarantined folks who sat on our butts at home in front of screens. Bravo, and WOW. Just, wow!
Those walls look amazing! It must have been so satisfying peeling off that tape to reveal those lovely lines! And the wood looks beautiful. I’m very jealous!
Yes, my favourite part!
I was going to say the same thing - it always feels good to peel that tape away!
I feel your doing the orginal owners proud with all your hardwork!
My wife has been asking me every week since your last video came out whether you posted an update. Love your work!
Never in a million years would I have thought I'd find a video about DIY so fascinating :-)
OMG the house is turning out beautiful, the white walls just make the wood beams look more beautiful. I was holding my breath as you and your wife we standing on those make-do platforms cleaning the beams.
I've been following this renovation since the beginning and I still love every second of it! You also introduced me to something I never knew I would enjoy, power ballad :D
I'm really looking forward to the 'final' video when you've moved in and decorated it to live in and then staged it extra nicely for a video. Lovely.
You are a master craftsmen, your talents out weighs your humility. although your
humility is something to be hold in a world that is much about it's
haughtiness... It's a joy, and a pleasure to see you, and to take us through with you while you work. I see the good lady of the home is also well skilled in some of what you videoed of her doing.
I was in Korea in January of 67, the villages outside of the base camp, used heated floors,
Round charcoal a stack of three high, two or three wide. a guy would come by every morning to rotate the used one out and add a new one to the top. cozy. warm air makes a big difference under the floor.
This is exactly what I needed today! The perfect antidote to a cold and snowy day when the sun goes off shift at 4:43 PM :-(
The house is coming together beautifully. "Disappointing walls"? I call it "character"!
I'm truly enjoying this journey. Thank you for letting us come along.
Thank you. I like that - I can also say the walls are individually crafted so that no two look alike.
@@TokyoLlama bespoke walls 👍👍
Love the white, makes it clean and airier
I’m always waiting for updates, I’m very invested on the process. Such a beautiful cultural learning experience.
I live in Canada, nothing like that here so it is an amazing learning process
You are a great Father and a Husband. I admire your calmness and inner strength
overcoming every obstacle. You are doing amazing job !
Oh and the plaster is fantastic.Well done.
I never thought I would be this excited to see a complete stranger finish renovating a house in another country
"Oh yeah, I made some shitty walls and I'm not a professional and its cheaper this way." he says as he makes basically perfect damn walls. I'll be over here crying into my orange peel mess I made for myself.
Hahaha....I hear you Bob.
In Southern California we hang drywall sheets horizontally and screw around the perimeter as well as in the field.
It's pretty common in the US to hang 4'x8' sheets horizontally. The center seam is sealed by a tape and a plaster compound for drywalls.
@@jackielinde7568 In Canada too. Actually, it's specified in our construction code. A lot less joints to mask.
In Germany too
Yah surprised to hear vertical is better for earthquakes. Horizontal , perpendicular to studs, would seem better to me for lateral strength. Which is the way it is done in Canada. But drywall doesn’t provide a lot of strength anyway.
Drywall sheets are always hanged vertical in Sweden, as the height are 240cm (standard ceiling height). Didn't know anyone hanged them any way else.
I absolutely DESPISE plaster work... Kudos to you for getting as much done as you did, and don't worry about the flaws; It's character.
Good to see you posting again! Keep us updated!
Everyone needs more power ballads in their lives, good to hear you're slow close to move in before the Winter.
The amount of times I say ‘wow’ whenever these videos come out is insane
Looks amazing, I remember the very first episode. You are incredible how that house has transformed into the beautiful building it is today. Well done and congratulations looking forward to the next one 👍
Most informative renovation ever. Who even bothers creating sketchup model to explain to viewers how everything works? Love it! More power and God bless to your family.
I just found your renovation series and I'm hooked!! I can't wait to see the completed renovation :) the house is coming along so beautifully
I just watched all the videos from this series over the last few days and the house is looking beautiful! All the DIY work looks tough but it is definitely paying off. Can't wait to see the finished product
Glad to see update. As for the , "imperfect" shukui, it LOOKS BEAUTIFUL. SO unless someone wants to redo it better or pay to be redone, ENJOY YOUR IMPERFECTIONS! I do. Good job. Also, the white will really show off the beautiful wood.
Imperfections or not, your home is a wood worker's dream. It all looks so wonderful together. Those beams are to die for!
12:14 this moment when I randomly see a german product in an english spoken Video about an japanese house renovation 😊 It took me some seconds to realize. Nice Video, and You did a great job !
I’ve done drywall for so many years it pains me to see the misery that a rookie endures but I admire them for trying.
YAY! ive been eagerly waiting for another follow up
the progress each video is incredible, the plaster must've been back braking and difficult but it looks like you picked it up well! cant wait for the next episode!
Wow, wow and more wow! As always, I wished there was more. Your videos are so well edited that they seem to go by in a flash leaving one wishing there was more.
It's been nine months since I was last in Japan with no end in sight to when this madness will end so we can return to some sort of normal and go back again. Your videos at least let me sort of live in the moment as I too plan on moving to Japan again having been back and forth over the last 25 years and having lived in Kyoto and Tokyo for a couple of years during that time.
Great work and attention to detail. Love the progress on your home and look forward to the updates. All the best to you and your family as you move in. Cheers!
Thank you!
Wow, so excited for the finished product. I'm so jealous you can buy an affordable home with room to grow your own food. You're living the dream of millions!
Thank you so much for this great update. The house looks more and more livable! It looks like there is still a lot to do, but less than what is already done! Congrats on your purchase and on the massive rework of this very interesting architecture.
Thank you!
I love the lime plaster finish. You did a great job. So excited for your family! The natural outside siding looks very nice.
The contrast of the interior walls and the wood is beautiful. Thanks for posting your progress. Your determination is motivating.
Your plaster work looks excellent to me... It is not a factory where everything has to be 100%. There is a character that goes with this old Japanese home...
Omg I like white walls and ceiling, make it brighter , sunnny and the combination wlth wood is fantastic I love it
I commend you for taking on these big projects. The plastering is lovely and a bit of imperfection wouldn't make me think less of the improvement.
Fantastic to see how far the house has come on. One day you will be able to sit back and say, I made ALL this happen!. And instead of working on it, just enjoy it. Very well done!
Oh wow, it's really coming together! the house looks beautiful (and very weatherproof 😂). I love seeing how much thought and care you put into doing so much of the work on your own
It's amazing what difference some nice clean painted walls can make in making a room look brand new. 😍 Love it!
Awesome job. Love the interior walls. I think the "not so perfect walls" gives them character. Things are looking great. Cheers.
Wabi sabi, is the Japanese term for this isn't it?
Wow, it is really coming along. I spent 6 summers in Tokyo without air conditioning. I would sleep under a wet towel. It snowed 26 times In Tokyo in 1983... without heat. I would full a clean wine bottle with sento water to warm up my futon. So you have my sympathy. The thing is you are doing it right. Thanks for the update from Vancouver Canada- with central heat and air conditioning.
You're doing such a terrific job here! Your kids have a great example of what kind of a person to become when they grow up
Aww yeah! New upload! Love seeing how your house has progressed so well!
This is absolutely beautiful. I love how you married the old style with modern, while keeping the historical value of the home. When you finish, you should already have equity and if you ever decide to sell, this investment should be very good for you. The integrity of the original home is still there while updating and, to me, that’s the best part of this renovation!
Very well said.
While the house has older techniques used in it's construction, just remember the house was only built in the 90's...hardly historic.
@@stevenbalekic5683 It is still an older home!
@@starflower703
Didn't say it wasn't older, just that it's not historic.
@@stevenbalekic5683 semantics
In my view, your method gives your walls character not flaws... it will be something you'll always remember when you look at those walls years later and chuckle to yourself and wonder how you managed to get it all done.
We live for rent and had from the neighbor above us a water damage in the bathroom. The drywall had to be opened to inspect the damage and it was now repaired. When I inspected the walls once again, I first noticed how many disappointing places there are here. Comment of the painter (who painted the bathroom today): "Well, thirty years ago the construction workers used to drink a few beers during work and after lunch they like to have a few schnapps afterwards" ... would at least explain a few things (PS: I live in Germany) 😋😂 I am happy about the video, the progress is really amazing, and I am looking forward to the final result 😍
You, sir remind of my father. He was a DIY in when he was your age. You did a excellent job.
Thank you for taking us along on your adventure. I love the thought and care you put into the decisions you make for the house. Blessings
It looks gorgeous. Imperfection means a human did it. Most people will just be impressed you did the work.
Watching your progress from the beginning makes me almost as happy as if this was my house. But your hard work and doing almost everything DIY reminds me of when my mom and uncle renovated my grandpas 2nd two family home. Three floors and 2 years of renovation of 100 yr old house and just like you, the results were worth it.
I love watching the house being taken care of so carefully and brought back to make a family home. Warms my heart. 'Disappointing wall.' 😂
Yay! I've been waiting for a video wondering how ya'll have been doing.
To me, your efforts are defined by one word: sticktoitiveness! You clearly want your family to have the best possible comfort and safety. You're a good husband and dad.
I never thought that i would be watching someone fix up an abandoned house from scratch since ive never been into anything construction/housing related but here i am excited for an update anyways
Your house is getting sooo beautiful!! I absolutely love it.! Nice work and so nice to see an update ☺️ love to see how it’ll become 😍
Thanks!
Wish you lots of of happiness in your home now that you are moving in,much admiration, the wood looks so lovely against the white walls, lots of hard work, looking forward to see it all.
I can only agree with the previous speakers: your house was an uncut gem, now it is beginning to shine. An incredible show of strength and willpower! Respect! It was worth it.
Wow, you’re so talented. Not only you bought an abandoned home but you fixing it yourself and remodel inside to you taste👏👏👏 It’s already beautiful on the outside. Can’t image how amazing the inside is going to look! 🤗 can’t wait for the outcome of this house
I really love the plaster job you did. With my hand-eye coordination issues, I could not get a finish close to what you have.
Great update, thanks for taking the time!
Thanks for the update! I'm really blown away by how great the house is coming along. Your meticulous preparation is really paying off too; that drywall work isn't easy but you've got a great result out of it! The oil applied to the roof beams really gives some life and richness back to the wood, transforming it; same goes for the external wood treatment as well. Again, thanks and well done!
I like how the joiner section between the house and the bathhouse is black and matches the black on the main house, it gives it a touch of modern architecture. Also loving the wood exterior and the lime plaster interior. I wouldn't call the imperfections in plaster, imperfections, it's just adding character.
Always happy to see updates!
Worth the wait. Looking pretty good.
When I was young. My family and I lived on a Indian reservation. We used a wood stove to heat the entire house. Electricity wasn't always a option. During the winter we used thick blankets over doorways to separate the rooms to keep others warm. The kitchen was one of the larger rooms we would keep cut off because if you were using the kitchen eventually the cooking stove would heat it up. The same with the laundry room because of the dryer. It's not the prettiest thing, but it does work. Anyways love the videos. Keep them coming, and your house is looking amazing.
My husband and I are fixer uppers too. We love watching the progress on your home. Always gives us the itch to buy and fix again.
great to see the update, just an amazing house, doing a great job!
Looking great! Can't wait to see the next update, very exciting!
Remember no one is born profesional, practice makes the master of your own home, greetings from juarez chihuahua.... i love watching your videos.
My favorite episode so far! I’m a carpenters stepson and know the labors of quality craftsmanship. I love the traditional JP house and this is a great series for dreams outside of my desire. Keep up the amazing work. The plaster work is tedious but looks amazing when finished. Be very proud of yourself. This is a home I would place on the top of the list above larger or exotic location homes.
we have a couple ugly walls in our house. Drywalling is not forgiving ;-;
The house looks amazing! Thank you for a positive video, it was well needed
