Return to the Davidson Seamount Whale Fall | Nautilus Live

  • What a difference a year makes!
In October 2020, E/V Nautilus returned to the Davidson Seamount whale fall in Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary to find a dramatically different scene from the one discovered just the year before.
During the final dive of the 2019 Nautilus expedition season, our team discovered the skeletal remains of the baleen whale lying on its back.
“It is so different,” noted scientists aboard the vessel.
A whale fall occurs when a deceased whale descends to the seafloor, bringing with it a banquet of vital nutrients to deep-sea scavengers. A side-by-side comparison of the 2020 visual survey taken by ROV Hercules in 2019, showed that the whale fall had undergone dramatic density changes in the 12 months since our last visit. Whereas the whale fall was once covered in a thriving abundance of life in October 2019, it was nearly devoid of organisms just a year later.
“The rib bones are just kind of disintegrated there,” said Lead Scientist Chad King. “The whole rib cage was supported last year. I mean, it was still upright and everything.”
We sampled large pieces of bone in order to further characterize the whale and the process of decomposition that it underwent, and then we “waved goodbye” - until next year.

I have a tip that may greatly increase your views and subscribers. When I occasionally went to bars in the 90’s, one of the bars had a large tv on the wall that was kept on the nasa channel (I believe) with a continuous live stream of the moon. It was just there for ambience. I don’t think people looked at it much because the image never changed - pretty boring. But I could imagine thousands (or millions) of recreational imbibers (ok, drunks) all over the world staring up at your live streams from their local bars and restaurants, watching the relaxing scenery constantly change as the submersible gently flys over the ocean floor and the relaxed party goers try to spot the local flora and fauna (and even learn how to identify them). People in bars get bored and like to have things to watch and do if they’re not currently in a conversation, thus figuring out a way to advertise this channel to bars and restaurants could prove advantageous for everyone. I see a huge potential for this method of outreach in getting people interested in marine biology - especially the undecided majors. And I’m sure it could be the source if many fun drinking games - having to take a drink every time a certain species is spotted. Bass pro shops has a huge aquarium in their restaurant that provides much entertainment for the diners - it gives people something to watch while they visit with each other. You’re channel is even better because there’s more to see since the scenery is constantly changing.

this is so cool. not just the whale fall itself and how it changed, but to see how you navigate to it and see the vastness of just this teeny tiny bit of the ocean floor and how similar it all looks. like an underwater desert where you can´t navigate just by visual clues. on the other hand, i doubt that any creatures down there navigate by sight. or do they?

More than a space, we feel like we need to explore sea more. Like the outer space, there are no oxygen. However everything is liquid and planktons. I wish that sea exploration is a thing for all the people out there. Seeing this makes me think there are more life down there to find answers of how earth is made. Please keep this up!
