Making a Rawhide Knife Sheath

- After making a handle for a knife, I needed a sheath to go with the knife it self. I picked up some rawhide and went to work, surprisingly it was a great material to work with because so many things could be done with rawhide. Its a fun and affordable way to make anything you want and yet still be practical in use.
Awesome looking sheath. I'm going to have to try this.
A man after my own heart! I discovered thee "raw hide" bones myself some months ago and it does have many uses. The only drawback is that this stuff is still treated in some kind of way. It doesn't have the look or feel of 'real' rawhide. But lacking the real thing, this does nicely.
Sorry for the first 1:20. im not sure what happened there, but the rest of the video is good. have fun.
Nice work brother!!! I'd love to see the finished product, all dried and perhaps treated with a mix of beeswax and coconut oil to help preserve it.
If also love to see you make more vids good stuff brother 👍👍

Mink Oil better....
Just a short comment. In my 50+ years of knife and sheath making, I have found that Rawhide dries hard as rock! Didn't that bother you when your sheath dried? I've found that it will abrade whatever handle you use AND the blade. Are you concerned by that? One other note...if you put a point on your Rawhide lace (like you did) then dry just that point with a hair dryer, the pointed part will work like a needle. Nice job Thank you.

I find that that's a good thing, using cowhide is much better for sheaths as its thick and rigid, bit it's much more expensive, so when rawhide gets more rigid as it dries, it holds the shape of the knife better.
@@shaggyat5power112 Thanks. I buy Goat Rawhide from Springfield Leather in Missouri, and sometimes Elk Rawhide. The prices are really good. I (personally) don't see Rawhide as being a good choice when it gets as hard and as abrasive as rock, but then that's just me. Thanks again.

@@Stoney327 yah, I do definitely prefer cowhide, but I find rawhide to make as a suitable replacement when done right
cool video. Is there a way to reharden the hide by baking it or something?
Really appreciate the sharing of this on here ,, thank you for your very interesting idea on choice of materials ,,, just a quick note seeing as you like utilising natural products, why don't you make yourself a bone needle for the sewing ? leg bone from a cow is hard and durable and can be worked ;-)
No kidding!? I have a bunch of leg bones laying around. it did cross my mind to make a bone needle, just out of thick fish bone. However, I fill definitely try cow bone and throw a video together. Thanx for the idea brother..
Tez wynn INDIANS HAD NEEDLES. ...TRADED WITH THE WHITES..
Damn, it turned out great. Really beautiful. But why didnt the hide hardened?
I have one small question where is the welt for so your blade don't slice threw
your stitching ?
I placed a heavy book right where i wanted the welt for the blade to be so it sets and dries properly and it was no problem.
Don't let your dog get ahold of your sheath! :)
Why not make a belt loop out of the leather piece at once?
Thank you! Like and Sub!
What did I just watch ??????
you dont have a clue
