  • An introduction to tramping (sleeping in a HGV) for 1st timers.
    As a very new driver myself, when I first started there was so much I didn't know, like how much it can cost to sleep at a Service Station etc. So I thought I'd make a short video with my very own beginner tips.
    enjoy and please feel free to share

    Hi Tom,just havin a laugh, i am 71 yrs you " KIDS " 😊 are so lucky with todays tech satnavs ,mobile phones laptops etc .Back in my days all we had were maps and big city street maps,most towns we had to stop and ask people for directions the people we use to look out for were Policeman,Postmen, and Milkmen do you know what a Milkman is he he sorry mate.I learned very quick not to ask women they would say O YES go down here turn right left etc etc and when i followed their instructions i found myself often up a deadend or a one way street not good when you already committed to turn and someone is up you'r arse 🤢.Exellent advice overnight on industrial estates 👌.I am enjoying you'r vlogs .

    Once you pass your test can you go straight into tramping or would you recommend just doing day/night shift work to get some basic experience?
    Also how much would you say a new driver needs to have saved before going out tramping? For things such as service stations, tolls, food, entertainment etc etc

    Tbh this country is ridiculous for the way we treat truckers. We should have better quality at a much cheaper price for drivers that provide a vital service. It's an embarrassing situation in the UK.

    Hi mate, great vlog. Was wondering do u know of any 12/24 volt alarm clocks u can get? I'm looking at getting into the industry and thought a loud alarm clock would come in handy especially as i would probably wear ear plugs if tramping. I also have an ileostomy so having a half decent kip would be good, thanks!

    Cheers for the video - and stay healthy! Have you thought about cooking on a little gas hob? You can make quite a few interesting meals on just 1 gas ring, and it should sit nicely on the centre console. (Open the windows a bit so it doesn't stink the cab out).
    If it's not too cold or windy you can cook outside the cab, like camping. It's nice winding down at the end of the day with my chopping board, onions, garlic, sausage, etc, bit of pepper or spices... I don't like the burger chains but sometimes ok it is an easy option but 2 of them in a row and i'd be feeling sick haha!

    • @CraigToddOfficial
      @CraigToddOfficial Před 2 lety

      haha Love that idea Paul... If it has a fridge in the cab that would be very feasible for sure. Chicken, Scrambled Egg, Steak even... hell yes... I like porridge too with peanut butter and protein added... delish.

    I've been tramping 30 years. My advice if you stay in a lay-by is wind your trailor legs down and pull the tractor unit away from the trailer. Takes 5 mins at night and 5 mins in the morning. It won't be a bad night then. Buy a cheap alarm for your diesel tank. My firm bought them for us. We have a movement alarm that clip behind the tank. It does work.

  • @matty6848
    @matty6848 Před 4 lety +2

    A camping stove with pots & pans is the best. Otherwise you end living on processed crap all week, which coincidentally isn’t very good for your health. If you get a porta kettle make sure it’s a 24volt for HGVs they boil much quicker. You can order takeaways but you’ll be the size of a house within 6 months, and it costs a fortune. And try to eat healthy as your literally stuck behind the wheel all day with very little or no exercise.

      @chris77777777ify Před 4 lety

      I’d say get a stove, But get a SMALL PRESSURE COOKER.
      Just cook on top of yesterday’s cook. You can fry in them too.
      So with a pressure cooker you only need one pot ! For everything, plus they save on gas due to firm lid.

    There's obviously different fifth wheel heights, what do you do that gives you confidence for those pesky bridges?

    • @GarethT902
      @GarethT902 Před 2 lety

      Most 5th wheels are 1240mm the trailer height is based on this and often written on the trailer. Rule of thumb use the written height and add 10cm for comfort.
