Giannis being one of the ones who are part of the old is the reference to analyst and fans in general who believe Giannis is old school and will stay with his team and try win a chip there. And the Bucks were chosen, in my opinion, because they had the league's best defense and defenders yet give up a lot of threes. A nod to the era where 3s weren't common and defense was a huge priority.

Hand checking was outlawed in the late 1970s. Perhaps it was a point of emphasis to call it more often in 2004.
Actually, I think, in the 70s they changed the rules so it was more restricted, and in 2004 they banished handchecking entirely, but I do remember some players complaining about how hard it was to score in the early 2000s, because of the combination of mild handchecking and zone defense.
I think Toronto might have been first on the Dream Team list not only due to them being the furthest north, but because they are the "defending champions". Then they move on to Milwaulkee, the top record in the 2020 season with the defending MVP there to take down.
