Jonah's good at not letting Howard constantly interupt him and take over the conversation
Loved it when they were talking about sinkholes in Mexico on "This is the End" and Jonah ad libbed "Sink hole De Mayo".
Arnold didn't want to say the now classic line "I'll be back".. sometimes writers do know better
I don't think he's arguing that they don't. I think he's saying as I've heard other actors say, it's not as fulfilling or enjoyable to stick to the script.

Ad-lib is fine for brainstorming funny/alternate dialogue, but what I hate is when it becomes obvious filler.
There are some films (usually Judd Appatow style comedies) where it's painfully obvious when the actors
are going off-script and indulging in their improv routine.
To me, that's more of an editing issue. There's plenty of great things that come out of those improvs, but knowing what to keep and what to leave out is key.
Must be fun for directors, trying to herd all the actors and their different 'styles.'
They know what they're getting into when they hire the actor.
The Coens apparently didn't 😄
It's not. Trust me. It's also a nightmare for the editors as well
If you cast an improv actor and expect a Shakespearean performance the problem is you.

You care too much about an interview from 2016
It's really up to the director, some don't want that. I get that Tarantino pays people to read the dialogue, but he wants to be fully in control of all things in his art. He's the writer, director, producer, etc. Scorsese wants actors to fill in the shoes of THEIR character, Tarantino wants actors to play HIS characters. It's a different approach, both valid since both are generational directors of our time.
Strikes me as he wants to standout and do his own thing, rather than serve the movie.

Seems a bit egotistical, especially in a Coen Brothers' movie.
It was just a word, he wasn't improving. Many actors make such mistakes

Freestyle if you’re a pro ala Larry David. But freestyle rarely beats honed out thought. It’s a bit childish, in a “I don’t eat broccoli” way.
I hear many actors talking about how they adlib their lines. All actors on board. Robin Williams probably adlibed most of his lines as well
Not in his dramatic films.
The difference was in many of his scenes (especially in the Mork and Mindy show) they wrote something along the lines of “Robin adlibs” and let him go nuts. And that was in his comedies, not serious dramas.
In comedies, it might not be as big of a deal, but the more serious the film is, the more likely they should learn their lines.

Bs. You turn up and say your lines. The writer pored over that dialogue for months maybe years. And you're going to turn up, a small cog in the machine and "add your bit"?? Learn your lines, perform them creatively and go home.

I can see where he's coming from, but if you're hired for a part and the director has expectations to stick to the script, that's why you're being paid.

Some directors are what I call “toy soldier” directors - you are their plastic toy soldier and they are going to manipulate you at their discretion as they play make believe.
Kubrick is a good example.
That's basically the job of all directors, to direct the actors to bring about of a vision of art
