Idk if it's just my cautiousness from the country I live in, but the idea that most people are trustworthy and honest is more of an unrealisitic expectation to me (like strangers specifically). Especially when you are outside, one should be pretty cautious to prevent stuff like this happening. But like man, taking out my phone, and putting it out of my eyesight in public is wild to me😂

I once was out for lunch in a touristy in London, and had my phone next to my coffee on the table, and my bag across from me in the seat. The waiter of the Cafe actually told me that there's a lot of theft in the area and told me to have my belongings closer to me, and I kept my phone in my bag between my legs. Ever since then I've been extremely cautious of where my things are when I'm out in public

Thank you for sharing this experience with us. It’s such a shame you had to go through this during what sounded like such a euphoric time! Drawing a positive from the situation it reiterates that material things don’t really matter and you (or your date) were not harmed during the ordeal! Yes it’s a pain, but things could always be a lot worse and I think looking at things this way change the way you perceive misfortune; building resilience, character and in this case vigilance. OMG I can totally relate to your story... July 2019 - I was in Madrid traveling solo but also staying at my friend's place. I had a great evening with a Canadian couple, we had awesome time until my phone got stolen at 11pm in Taco Bell - a guy came over to our table asking for money with a cardboard in his hands, but really he used that to stole my phone under it. It was literally 3 minutes after we realized that happened but the guy was already gone. It was a struggle to get back at my friend's place, but I managed it and next day filed a police report (which obv didn't help at all). I ended up staying for 2 weeks in Madrid, and flying back home without my phone. I didn't even have a watch, so not knowing what time it is independently was so challenging, as well as not having all other possibilities our phones provide us. Anyways, I was traumatized about this whole situation as I also lost over 50k of photos & videos (my backup was damaged). Yeah, The Universe really said to me "Let's start all fresh and test your resilience!"

I started blaming myself for making my life even worse than it is already. Then I remembered than it's not me who should feel ashamed or blamed, it's the one who steals from people the same day they got really bad news. I was completely distracted and sad, and someone saw this and took advantage of my vulnerability and disconnection with my surroundings and stole my phone. Just to make you feel better.
I was on a working trip to Paris, circa 2004. I woke up kinda early for my noonish flight back to Rio (yes, I’m a 62 yo Brazilian).
20 years ago, printed airplane tkts were still the norm.
Well, since it was early, I decided to take the train to the airport, something I never do.
Here I am, distracted, on a loaded RER, on my way to CDG.
When I arrived at Roissy, I turned around to get my briefcase. I t was gone.
Obviously, an indifferent attendant at the Air France desk told me I had to buy another tkt.
I’ve been flying since I was 6 months old, my father was a diplomat.
I told her that she was mistaken (an euphemism my superego imposed on me), she could charge me a tariff to reissue the tkt, but had to honor the fare.
She begrudgingly and rudely told me I had to go the police station and register that I had been stolen.
Surprisingly, the policeman were extremely helpful and mannered. Not something the French police force is known for.
After the 45, maybe 50 minute hurdle, I’m back at the desk.
The same indifferent attendant looked at the paper, at which point I ask for a copy of the document. She then tells me that she wouldn’t keep it, she just needed to confirm that I went to register that I had been robbed.
I can’t express my indignation enough. I didn’t mouth out to her because I was late and didn’t want to delay my boarding.
Both of us made the same stupid mistake. We put something of value away from our sight.
For both of us it was a matter of distraction. Yours a much better one at that.
I was just happy my work went well, I had met great people and learned a lot.
You were infatuated by a cute girl. Beats the heck out of my experience.

It is interesting that your date is sitting to your right and more or less facing towards you and yet someone is able to walk up to your table, that close, and grab your phone and she misses it too.

I was in my first year of uni when at a party I met a guy I fell head over heels with. A couple weeks later over a weekend he spontaneously spends the evening with me at my place and in the morning I walk him to the train station as he needed to get home. I didn't need much so I took this long coat which had 2 large fronts outside pockets and I put my wallet in one of them. On the way back to my place after dropping him off, I took the tram back. I was deep in thought" in love" and daydreaming about our future ( I didn't know but it was the last time I saw him...ha) while daydreaming, I touch my wallet a couple times through the fabric to make sure it was still there. Eventually, when I exited the tram...my wallet was gone... I feel so foolish. I got it back a few weeks later but I had already cancelled all my credits card etc...

Never leave your phone or wallet out in the open. Use a backpack, man purse or a travellers wallet belt that is strapped around the waist under your clothing.

So glad your date didn't rob you! You were a victim. I'm surprise she wouldn't have seen it happen.

i got robbed of my phone too, but in arguably one of the worlds safest cities. like a place where shit you leave at a bus stop of a megapolis get either not touched or returned to you. had to throw money at the problem. thankfully didn't have passport stolen. that would have been much much worse.

I'm sorry this happened! And it's sad to me that you had reservations about describing the connection and intimacy we sense when we make prolonged eye contact with someone. Sure, sometimes potential couples may not feel exactly the same way when they're having a moment like that, but when they do feel the same way, that isn't something to be ashamed of or something to feel ashamed about desiring or dreaming about. When you're in love or when you see a couple that's in love, that's a common indicator of their deeper connection.
I imagine some thieves think their actions are innocuous, compared to other crimes. But, maybe if they had something stolen from them, they'd have a different opinion. Or maybe they became thieves because something was stolen from them and they got it into their heads that they should become a thief too? People go in different directions when something happens to them.
And folks, we are way too reliant on our phones (am including myself of course). Drew was having a great time with someone new, complete with a picturesque evening in a beautiful city, and it's shattered by realizing his phone has been stolen. And that would have been all of our reactions. I would have lost. My. Mind, regardless of how wonderful of a time I was having. In reality, all I could do is wait until I got home, to cancel the service. And because so much of our information is on our phones, we'd have to contact our banks, reset all the passwords, warn others about what happened, etc.

My sister go pick-pocked in Lisbon. She had her wallet in her purse, and we walked and walked... we arrived to a café and when she reached for her wallet, it was gone. We back-tracked all our moves until the last time she knew she had her wallet. So yeah... she got pick-pocked while walking.
