    Forget match of the day -- I'm more interested in hatch of the day. Because when it comes to premier league five-door motoring, the BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo is one tough opponent.
    Unfortunately, the 328i GT is leaving our fleet, which is a real shame, because I've realised it's a far more relevant car than I initially gave it credit for.
    If you'd asked me eight months ago to rank the 3 Series GT, saloon and Touring in order of preference, the hatch would've come third. But that's the point of these reports -- they give you time to uncover a car's strengths and weaknesses.
    Admittedly, the 3 GT has a bit of an image problem -- as a result, BMW has only sold 2,183 since last April's launch, and shifted 163 last month, compared to 1,320 saloons and 673 Touring estates. But I think if dealers pushed a bit harder, they could convince more buyers to spend the extra £1,000 over the Touring.
    Buyers like my sister, who considered a new 3 Series Touring a few years ago, but found it wasn't quite big enough in the back for her kids. She went for a far more expensive 5 Series Touring -- yet the 3 GT would've fitted perfectly.
    I never fully appreciated the spacious rear seats, but the big boot was great while I was renovating my flat. Features like the flat floor, with a slot beneath for the parcel shelf, and the boot-mounted seat releases show the thought that's gone into this car.
    The 328i isn't the best model, as we averaged only 29.8mpg. Still, the 242bhp 2.0-litre twin-turbo is smooth, powerful and fun to rev -- that's probably why we couldn't match BMW's official 44.1mpg.
    Our model had £11,840 of options, too, but you could halve this and still get a great car. Just be sure to add the £1,990 Professional Navigation Pack: its big map display looks awesome and makes cutting through rat runs easy.
    But the thing I'll miss most about the 3 GT is its all-round brilliance. In town it's super comfy and easy to drive, on the motorway it's swift and quiet, and it's as much fun as a sports car on a B-road. As I said, it really is the hatch of the day.

      I must say that I can´t agree to that, I have seen several, I´m living in Germany and they are really not good looking, neither on footage, images or in real. And why do they not look good, Because the essential BMW Design DNA key features has been compromised - it´s happening at the C pillar and the entire rear box section. They have much the same design struggles with the X series Except the X5.

    • @maarcTS
      @maarcTS Před 10 lety +7

      HesteBremse I think all german manufacturers are loosing their DNA design…All Audi models look quite the same (it's difficult to distinguish the A4, from the A6, and from the A8), and mercedes ones are loosing their "luxury style". I think that the only one which is keeping most of his DNA is BMW (despite, is changing too). Anyway, it's a pity for all of them!

    I traded in my X5 for this car. Don't get me wrong, I loved the X5 but the fuel economy, insurance and same cargo space won me over. One thing not mentioned is that the car sits higher than a standard 3'er and as mentioned, has a cavernous back seat, larger than my X5. I'm surprised this didn't become a taxi fleet car.

    My mom got this car 2 years ago and our average mpg is 20,5. I don't know how you get up to 44, for us it's impossible. Even very slow in EcoPro it's about 30 mpg. We don't like the little 4-cylinder engine, it needs very high revs to build speed and that's why it takes so much fuel. The 335i would be a much better choice, but the car itself is great and we love it!

      driving footage will always have 2 passengers inside the review car, because somebody aside from the reviewer has got to handle the camera and audio equipment, while 2 passengers ensure if an accident occurs the driver/presenter will have a secondary backup witness for insurance and police report reasons.

    • @007knick

      Robertas Bukantis Actually no they don't usually. This is unusual....
      I know it isn't exactly the same thing but if you watch top gear they never have anyone in the car with them. (There is a camera car that is filming in front and sometimes another car leading the way or whatever.) The camera is mounted in the left hand side top right hand corner of the windshield or the right hand side top right if it is LHD. There is also a camera attached to the back seats on a special mount.
      There is never 2 people in the car.

    • @derek400004
      @derek400004 Před 10 lety

      007knick wrong. Top Gear manages without a cameraman inside any of the presenter vehicles because they already have a 10-12 man background crew doing camerawork and other equipment setup.
      for smaller CZcams productions, ranging from AutoExpress to MotorTrend and even Chris Harris on Cars, there will always be at least a cameraman inside the presenter car unless they have a crew following closely in their work vehicles.

      im getting 330d xdrive Msport (RRP 45k too) mrs has a qashqai 1.6dci 360... both great, people who don't understand this car, don't understand what dads with kids really can justify as a practical family car. practicality of an estate, fast as an M3 virtually or at least the old ones, but with safety of 4WD and quality 6cylinder diesel. Its so practical people don't look beyond a touring estate that has problems with rear legroom, and width too, and for looks the coupe... but why so you have a big door, to cripple your passengers getting into the back. I love the special spoiler too that pops up over 70mph... or manually if you desire.Its great, looking forward to getting mine. While people are still asking questions I have answered them already for myself. Just the storage for the rear shelf is such a great idea, on top of tilt rear seats for different angles, really flexible boot... what more do you want? This is a perfect car... did I mention over 52mpg in the diesel with 260bhp and 0-62 in 5.4 and 155mph (restricted)?

    Still, it's 45 grand for a car that is trying to do a bit of everything and not really excel in any areas! If you need space, buy an estate or a hanger whenever you need the extra carrying capacity... Far cheaper, though a hanger does take up space if you don't have a place to put it.

    Sorry but as much as I really like BMW - I simply can´t get along with the GT´s and the X´s (except X5). And yes there are a market for them (I´m getting older) and yes it´s more practical, but the exterior has simply been compromised to much in my eyes - In fact I must admit that I hate it. I would take the touring version any day if i wanted more practicality, except that this is sadly more practical than even the touring.
    I would rather have an i3 over this if id really had to chose and could not choose any other version from the 3 series. the GT might not be a hideous car overall, but it´s hideous because it carries the BMW badge. The bigger GT is even worse - What a clumsy lump of oversized design shit. And because the GT name can be easily read as a sport hint (Grand Tourer) - that makes it even worse.
    Sorry for the ranting - The review was okay, bit off with the cam, never mind.
